Documenting Chanel CC markings through time

Sorry the experience left a bad taste in your mouth. Try to rethink the lesson as "get authenticated (here or elsewhere) prior to purchase!" We would have caught it as I commented when you posted. And if time is of the essence, only buy from sellers with a good return policy. There are many good reputable sellers out there - I still believe strongly in preowned buys; they are the best out there (although I am just as guilty buying my seasonal bags from the boutique when I fear I will lose out). For classics, I will search to death for one that's gold plated vs buy from store. Sometimes I will pay close to retail but still better than the shoddy stuff they make today
+1
I absolutely agree! The quality of vintage is built to last when properly taken care of. Thanks again for your valuable time in helping me find my new old bag!:hugs:

Hi Roku, in regards to your comment "shoddy stuff they make today", do you recommend buying Chanel bags that were made before a certain year? Not sure when the quality started going downhill...

Everyone has a diff preference - I like the ones from 08/09 best for caviar jumbo classics
For mediums I like ones that are a little older

Is anyone familiar with the side of the hallmark logo on the Vintage Lambskin Quilted Square mini? Just purchased one and I'm also not so sure what year it could be from. Mine has the marking on the logo on the top right

I agree. I've gotten VERY lucky with my pre-owned and vintage pieces. I saved so much money and the quality of the vintage bags are just incomparable. 2 out of my 3 Chanels are in near mint condition...I was very fortunate with the pre-loved market.

Yay! Glad to hear!

I see so many horror stories online so I have to share

My foolproof 3-prong method for buying pre-owned Chanel:

1. Know your seller. Make sure they are reputable. Someone who has been established in this business is not likely to ruin their name or reputation by trying to fraud a customer

2. Make sure seller will take the item back if you don't love it. Read the fine print on the return policy. Even if it's a 24-hour return policy, make sure they will take it back if you don't love it, without a restocking fee, for any reason (because it's pre-owned and condition, etc is subjective. And if you aren't near a Chanel, sometimes you won't know how it looks on you till you actually try it on you. It's a big purchase).

3. Get item authenticated post-purchase for your own peace of mind.

Honestly, you cannot go wrong, how can you go wrong this way?

Very interesting thread, I learned a lot. Thank you for usefull info.

echo, the only time there are markings on the CCs is whenthey are plated with 22K gold/alloy (hence the symbol for 22K gold). That is the only reason for the markings. I believe you don't see the markings on silver hardware. As far as vintage, I don't own any so I can't help you. But my beige med classic flap gold hdware has that mark in the top left corner to symbolise 22K plating.

I just got a small classic flap with ghw from NM, but there are no markings on the CCs..what does that mean then?

Having read through the thread I only see a single conversation about the gold plating markings being located in the bottom left, mostly they are talking about the other locations - so, would someone explain a bit more about the bottom left origins please, country it was made and roughly which year/decade ?
Thank you :hugs::flowers:

Hi! I'm looking at a jumbo Chanel on eBay that is similar; square marking on upper left c but made in Italy? That's the only thing that is throwing me off. Is it real? Did you get your question answered?

Hello! Has anyone figured out what the different marks mean? Here's mine. 2008-9, made in France, medium flap! W marking on the top left!

My friend buys and sells a lot of Chanel bags , she told me once, that the bags without the marks on, is not made with real gold, and the bags with mark on us made with real gold and in Paris. She told me too that after 2007 Chanel stopped make real gold chains for the bags. That why the new bags faids a lot faster then the vintage once. And there is different of the real gold chain, some bags is made with the yellow gold like the vintage once, and some is made with light gold.

I recently bought a Chanel Jumbo Caviar with a marking on the top left. I was scared because it was Made In Italy. I had it authenticated here and if was found authentic and they also authenticated it at Vestiaire Collective where I bought it. It is authentic, has the mark and it is Made in Italy. I hope that helps.
