I rehabbed a faded and stained gramercy. I didn't dunk. I don't usually on structured bags. I pulled out the suede lining and washed it, using acetone on ink and Lincoln EZ cleaner, also lightly sanding. For the exterior I filled deep scratches with leather cement. I mixed Lexol conditioner with a tiny amount of Wood n Stuff Leather Refinisher (you only need a sample size bottle) and applied that all over the bag. For the final step I used Blackrocks Leather n Rich. Here are before and after pictures.View attachment 3594180 View attachment 3594181 View attachment 3594182 View attachment 3594183 View attachment 3594184 View attachment 3594185 View attachment 3594186 View attachment 3594187

Great job on rehabbing the Gramercy, it looks gorgeous! I worked on one a few years ago and I resisted dunking it for a long time - but it was so dirty I finally gave it a bath and it held up very well, see link below. Just to let you know that they can survive the rough treatment, when that is the only option. Nice work!

Thank you katev, for posting pictures of your gramercy rehab as well, came out really nice too. Helps a lot to know someone else submerged their's, I feel more confident to do it to mine, it's the only way I can get the lining clean (er). A lot of dirt and stains. Not reaching too high at this point, just cleaner! Mine didn't have the brass hangtag. And I probably paid too much for it too!
These gramercy's are gorgeous, the leather reminds me of satiny velvet (?).
I like your Royalton too. All of them look great. What wonderful finds. That would have made my year!

Thanks! Sometimes it is scary to dunk a bag, but if it is too dirty to carry I usually figure, what the heck? and I go for it. Good luck with your Gramercy, they are gorgeous bags!

I think it's going to my tailor. He did a really good job on one of my bags that I had posted about here which I chickened out on because it was fully lined.

That bag is certainly worth saving! Ask the tailor for an opinion and if he isn't too confident, try the cobbler or luggage repair, good luck!

I had a cobbler repair an old Bonnie Cashin bag and he did a great job. Then I gave it a bath and it came out very well. In that case the lining wasn't torn but the leather and lining had had slipped out of the kisslock frame:

Pen marks are tough to get out IMO. My limited experience: I've had *some* success on faint ones, less success on bold/dark ones using Leather Master dye transfer remover. I've had zero success on any kind of pen mark on red. If you're good at matching color, you can cover them with conditioner + leather finisher or acrylic. Not on suede of course. Maybe someone else will chime in...

Pen marks are the devil and red is a delicate, difficult color to work with, or match, and it is easily damaged. If your clean-up attempts are unsuccessful you might try having the bags dyed.

I have never been a big fan of painting on leather, but dstalksalot bought a vintage red rambler with pen marks and she decided to decorate the bag to disguise the damage - it came out very well and saved a beautiful bag. Just an idea, see the link below:

Oh wow, that purse turned out really good.. Well I've been working on mine for quite some time now,to no avail..I conditioned it,because it was pretty stiff but the conditioner left big dark marks(like it was still drying)and the ink hasn't budged.I tend to overdo it sometimes when conditioning, so I dunked it to get out the excess.she is drying now[emoji17]
