Sorry this isn't for a Coach bag, but I'm sort of reposting this from the handbag maintenance section because I figured my rehabbers here would be better suited to answer. I've recently purchase a preowned Fossil Sasha. It looks gorgeous, but it feels mega stiff!! The leather is borderline crunchy/squeaky, it's so stiff. The previous owner said that she conditioned it regularly which makes me think she might have been using the wrong type of conditioner (maybe silicones??) My questions are: Is over saturating with leather conditioner the possible cause of this stiffness? And would you soak this one in a Dawn bath?

I've considered tossing it in the washing machine on gentle TBH. It's dark brown with dark brown heavy twill lining and it's already a distressed rugged leather anyway. I just don't want stitching coming undone.

What do yall think you'd do about this?

I've washed two Fossil bags (by hand, not machine) without any issues. I didn't soak them for a long time, though. Neither were stiff.

Hello ladies,
It has been a long time since I stopped by, I have not been rehabbing vintage bags lately, kinda of "scared".
In a short period of time (by bad luck I guess), three bags that looked great, just out of shape and bit dry, after the soak they showed mold that was not not visible before, it came back and ruined the bags. They didn't smell musty or anything, no signs.. so now, I do not know if there will be a way to tell before wasting time.

Anyway, you have helped me SO MUCH sharing your knowledge and tricks, that I always like to contribute when I can. This time I came to let you know that on a patent leather embossed (black) wallet, I picked up very cheap because it had scuffing, using plain rubbing alcohol surprisingly they came out. I tried in one to almost instantly remembering something like alcohol takes the finish out... so I wiped it immediately with water, to my surprise the scuff was gone and the finish still is there. I did this after cleaning the whole wallet and the scuffs were not gone. I didn't take a picture of the before, but in this one of the after you can see the finish was not affected, the big scuff was right below to the right of the turn lock. This worked for me but if you try, PLEASE be very careful.

Then with this cute wristlet I was successful in fixing the center of the flower, where the color was gone mixing three paints, the brown one has a bit of reddish tint, but was not dark enough so I added a bit of black, then for the shimmer effect I added just a dot of the gold. I believe this is a hard color to match, so in case you need to do it one day for some corner touch up, etc.. here it is, the before, after and the colors I used. Thank you ladies and keep up the great work!

So I am rehabbing a Coach 9185 (that I rushed into buying - because I over spent and it didn't have a strap and damaged hardware) but I was so smitten by the elegant lines.

It is super dry! I tried Leather CoR but the color is coming off. Have y'all ever used Cadillac leather lotion? It looks good till it dries but this bag needs more moisture.

Lexol was causing black transfer too. Help!

A recent rehab. Sad girl to glad girl (or closer, anyway). Can anyone tell me the name of this style? The bag dates from before 1994.

Did you wash it? If a bag is really dry, you need to give it a bath to open up the pores, then condition before it is completely dry. A bath will help remove excess dye too. If the color is coming off, it is possible the previous owner used shoe polish or dye on it, in which case you need to clean it completely to remove that. A bath alone won't be enough; you would have to use acetone and then bathe afterwards.

I've used Cadillac. I don't think it gives the deep conditioning a super dry bag needs. If CPR doesn't work, you can try Obenaufs LP or Leather Honey. Coat it on and then apply heat, either with a hair dryer or putting it in the sun. Don't buff until it has sat for several hours.
