Some people use Meltonian on purses. It is a cream polish, which is different than some shoe polishes that contain wax or silicone, which might not be the best for your purse. I bought some Meltonian for a rehab, but I've been knitting lately instead of purse rehabbing, so I haven't used it yet. If you don't want to remove it (and if your bag looks good, I wouldn't bother), you should make sure it is colorfast. You don't want to get polish on your clothes while wearing your bag.

I recommend you take a look at docride's post in the Hermes forum. She has a trick using ice water to ensure the polish is colorfast. https://forum.purseblog.com/threads...es-leather-care.295160/page-388#post-22565174 (this post and the one after it). I'm planning to use her process when I get back to my project bag.
Thank you.. I was afraid I had committed the ultimate sin in purse care! Both bags look fine and I have been wearing one with no ill effects. I used a horsehair brush and buffed vigorously after the shoe cream application.

Before I discovered this Forum I followed the advice on a website and used Meltonian shoe cream on two Coach bags (both glove tanned). I am thinking of washing both in warm water with Dawn dish liquid. Will that remove the shoe polish?

I've used meltonian cream on a few bags. I find it works really well on faded piping, it restores the loss of color well. A little goes a long way, just make sure to buff it out really well so it's doesn't transfer. I'm not sure I would cover a whole bag in it, but for little touch ups it seems to work just fine. Thank you. I did use it on the entire bag but buffed it well. Will a warm soapy bath remove the shoe cream so I can give my bag a proper rehab?

I haven't tried it after using the meltonian, but I don't think it could hurt to give it a go. I've dunked a bag more than once and there were no negative effects after bathing it twice. Maybe you can experiment and see?

Rub and buff or a metallic acrylic paint in a matching color should help with this issue.

If you can get an exact match, a metallic pen should work great. I've used a metallic pen on a silver metallic bag that had similar discoloration and it looked great. Mine didn't match exactly so I worked it over part of the rest of the bag to blend it.

Thanks for the help!

I met the seller and ended up picking up the bag - it was only $35, so what the hell, right? The hardware and structure looked to be solid, no loose threads or anything, and the only real issue is the scuffing / spots where the colour has come off, and a dirty lining. The seller had treated a couple of the spots with a metallic pen already and it looks good, so I think I'll give that a try first for the others.

There were a couple of pen marks on the lining and the upper inside corners had gold smudge on them, almost like contact transfer from makeup, and I scrubbed those out this morning with mild detergent and some q-tips. It's dry and looks a lot fresher already. I'll have to make a run to Michael's this weekend and see if I can find the right colour of pen.

Vintage patina in onyx by Ranger should do the trick. You may need to take off the existing finish, I'm not sure. There is a clear sealer- patina extender you will need to use too. It is made for metal/jewelry.

This is an amazing product. Worked like a charm. I'm still waiting for the sealer to come. When I does I'll finish up and post photos. Thank you again

You are welcome. There are a ton of colors available if you need the product for other projects. I've used it on cheap jewelry to add dimention and fine silver (99.9) and sterling (92.5) to add color. It is beautiful on brass jewelry. I'm not sure but I think it may work on other surfaces as well.
Show pics and let us know how you did it. Did you remove the previous color or paint over /around it? Let's hope it holds up.
Be aware, the sealer adds a tiny bit of sheen.

Can you point out which color to use on Coach brass hardware?

Sorry this isn't for a Coach bag, but I'm sort of reposting this from the handbag maintenance section because I figured my rehabbers here would be better suited to answer. I've recently purchase a preowned Fossil Sasha. It looks gorgeous, but it feels mega stiff!! The leather is borderline crunchy/squeaky, it's so stiff. The previous owner said that she conditioned it regularly which makes me think she might have been using the wrong type of conditioner (maybe silicones??) My questions are: Is over saturating with leather conditioner the possible cause of this stiffness? And would you soak this one in a Dawn bath?

I've considered tossing it in the washing machine on gentle TBH. It's dark brown with dark brown heavy twill lining and it's already a distressed rugged leather anyway. I just don't want stitching coming undone.

What do yall think you'd do about this?

I washed one Fossil and it didn't do well at all! I ended up throwing it away. I've had several Fossil bags and none of them were stiff and crunchy. I wonder if the leather has been permanently damaged. You can clean it with vinegar and then try deep conditioning it with something like Obenaufs LP.
