Hi everyone,
Can anyone recommend a way to get a musty odor out of a patent leather bag? I've looked up several threads on the Coach forum, but none of them seem geared specifically to an all patent bag. I've washed the lining a couple of times and it smells normal now, but now I think part of the problem is the patent leather itself. It's a Juliette.

You can wipe down the patent with something. Vinegar would be safe. Or you can spray it with zero odor or Febreze free nature. You can set it outside in the sun for a few days. You could seal it in a plastic bag with something that would absorb the odor such as baking soda, activated charcoal, bath salts, etc. There is a product called Smelleze that is supposed to work well.

Someone recommended Smelleze. I've never tried it. I have tried Zero Odor and Febreze Free and Natural. You can wipe down the leather with a spray; a little liquid won't hurt the leather. You can also pull out the lining and give that a washing. You should make sure there isn't any active mold growing. Airing outside in the sun is another good way to kill mold.

You should also consider whether you got a good enough deal to put up with the smell, which you should be able to eradicate, but may take quite awhile, or if you should just return it.

I agree dryer sheets or febreeze don't make a difference if the bag is that Yucky..airing it out for for as long as possible is a start..Then COFFEE!!..put a couple scoops of coffee in something like a pair of old stockings..just cut off the feet & tie them up..or buy some knee highs..Put the puse with the coffee in a plastic bag & close it up good, then change out the coffee every couple days..once the bag smells like coffee, you need to get rid of the coffee smell..get one of those Arm&hammer refrigerator packs & close up the bag in a plastic again.( I like the fridge packs because you don't have to worry abut the baking soda spilling).I've had sucess with this method SEVERAL times..It takes about a month..I've used this method AFTER washing the bag..You might want to try using Natures Miracle(from a pet store)to wash the bag with..If it can get out the smell of CAT pee..it can neutralize most smells!! I have probs with chemicals & but I've also had buyers that were extremely allergic to perfumes etc, so I stay away from them..I've also used different citrus oils(I love Tangerine) on cotton balls..Whole cloves..tea tree oil,lavender.. whatever you have handy I've tried the smelly stuff, it just gives me a headache...
Hope that Helps!! CHEERS !!:snowballs:Sheri

Well, it seems this one was WAY less icky than the last one I did! I stuffed her with dryer sheets and set her in front of the air vent overnight and most of the smell is gone! I carried her yesterday and she didn't smell funny, so I'm wondering if it was just how she was shipped rather than something that occurred at her prior home. She seems pretty great now! Thanks goodness!

PS - Nature's Miracle is amazing! I have three cats, so I also have a very large bottle of Nature's Miracle. Tea Tree Oil is good too, I'll have to get some of that to have on hand.

Thanks for all the advice, I'm mentally filing away for next time :D

Zero Odor is fantastic too. I sprayed my cat's litterbox with it and he looked perplexed because he could see it but he couldn't smell it! I haven't been able to find it lately so I bought Febreze free nature. I hope it works as well.

ETA: I'm glad you got the odors out of your bag. Did it come from a humid area? I think a package could be exposed to moisture along the way or some could have been trapped inside when they packaged it.

Thank you!

Yes and for $5 crazy! Funny how it looks definitely rust in this picture, but more red in other lights. It is a chameleon.

Definitely joodlz-worthy at $5...beautiful...don't care WHAT color of red it is...it's RED!

Can't wait to see the pictures!

No pics yet...been without internet (and land-line phone and TV) since Friday evening :( Thanks verizon!!! Back up and running yesterday, but getting ready for Celebration of Life on Sunday sending out email invitations. Maybe there will be a moment of down time and I can get organized...yeah, right?

Bummer about the lack of Internet! You have a lot of catching up to do!

I'll be thinking of you and your family on Sunday. Enjoy sharing the memories.

It's scary how dependent on technology we've become. Makes you wonder how we coped in the past.

All the best for Sunday.

New to Coach and new to rehab and "spiff up" a used bag. Bought this spotless, like new circa 2007 Ergo. Some areas of the leather felt rough. Took some leather CPR to the back of the bag as a test and it seems to have helped. Lots of blue black color is coming off of the bag onto the sponge. Assume it means the bag was polished to make it look newer. Should I polish with Meltonian when I finish cpr? Was leather cpr the right thing to use?

Avoid Meltonian or any polish. You should only need CPR. Buff with a brush or microfibre cloth. If you want more 'glow' you could finish with Black Rock.

How much is "lots"? Can you show us the cloth? I have had some black come off when conditioning black bags, just curious if this is the normal amount or if it really is polished.

I don't like adding more polish, I would use something neutral like the leather CPR.

I love that bag, btw!

Love that bag too, thanks! Buying waay too many. Darn eBay!

When cleaning another bag, I had some british tan come off, but just a little, and then it stopped. Pic #1 is from the second appliction to the back of the bag. Pic #2 is from the first application to the front of the bag. Didn't have a sponge per CPR directions so I have been using a magic rub. Worked fine on my tan bag and wallet.

Maybe I am over reacting?

I think that's a lot of black coming off so I think you probably do have some sort of polish on the bag. Others may have different opinions though. I have a black bleecker tote that I did a lot of work on that is probably the same leather and I don't recall that much black coming off.

What is a magic ruboff? Is it like the magic eraser? If so it might be a little harsher on the leather than you need.

Anyway if it doesn't look like the black is going to come off on your clothing and the bag is otherwise clean I wouldn't worry about working too hard to get it off. If you get the leather conditioned to your likeing I would let it "settle in" for a bit and then rub it with a dry cloth to see if it is in danger of rubbing off on your clothing. I would probably also try a damp cloth, to see what will happen if you get unexpectedly stuck in the rain.

You probably won't want to use a magic eraser to apply Leather CPR--they are notorious in my house for removing paint if you scrub for more than a few seconds. It's not like a sponge since there are cleaning agents in there that can damage a variety of surfaces. You can just use your fingers to apply the leather CPR since it's basically like a lotion (added bonus: It'll soften your hands too!)
