Mary, I love the bag you're working on. It looks great! I've only rehabbed 5 or 6 bags so far but gosh, I feel almost like a pro with each one I do. They're not perfect but seeing an older, worn bag come back to life right in front of your eyes is a good feeling.

Hint...roll up your hand towels or wash cloths before stuffing your bag with them. No lumps/bumps this way. lol Keep up the good work.
Hello,

Thank you for being so nice! Yes - I agree with you - it is a great feeling seeing this pretty bag restored and as you said - not perfect but I can't wait to take her out.

Thanks again,
Mary

Use cool water and try to keep the leather out of it as much as possible.

I'd be careful with the brown but I have a feeling it won't be an issue on that bag, so don't panic if you dunk it and get the leather wet.

I'd also be careful with oil on suede, it's almost impossible to get it on evenly and you might end up with spots. I've worked with a lot of suede, the last couple of times I put one in the washer I used fabric softner in the final rinse (probably Downy) and I *think* it helped with the stiffness that you sometimes get when washing suede. You could do the same thing with a sink dunk, just fill the sink with cold water and thourougly mix in the softener before putting the bag in. Again, not sure it does anything but it seems to, and as long as it's mixed the water it doesn't hurt anything. .

Thank you Two.time.bags, ledobe, shannonmarie and whateve! Sorry it's taken me so long to reply - trying to get used to the forum. I really appreciate your input.
1. No oil of any kind - got it! Thanks!
2. I'm considering giving her a bath in the kitchen sink. Cool water.
3. Bathe in Dawn? Downy in the final rinse? I used Woolite yesterday on the leather bag.
3. I'll use a nail brush to clean the suede and a microfiber cloth on the lining in the bath.
4. Rinsing is key! That worked well yesterday.
5. Brush the suede during the drying process to bring up the nap?
6. Would you use Apple Garde Rain & Stain after it's completely dry?

I probably won't try this for a few weeks. I love suede but this bag is stressful and at least this will keep me away from ebay for awhile (hopefully).

I just keep thinking - the perfect bag is out there somewhere:
1. One with more pockets/less pockets/larger pockets/smaller pockets
2. One with just the right shade of blue/purple/red/pink
3. One that zips/doesn't zip
4. One that has more hardware/less hardware/hardware in the right spot
5. One that is larger/smaller/just the right size
6. One that is black/brown/tan/gray
7. Of course all of this depends on my mood this week/this month/this season/this year

As some of you quote in your signature - This is the last bag or Just one more! And of course I can always say it's for my daughter - although every time I have a bag for her she says, "Mom - I don't need another bag!"

Thank you again for welcoming me to your community!

Don't forget vinegar. It really is the best cleaner for suede.

Not sure about Apple Guard I've never used it.

Of course the perfect bag is out there somewhere. The problem is every bag is perfect in some way!

:roflmfao:

Oh wow, it must have been bad. I don't know if Coach stores will be able to help, but you can buy them on ebay.

Yeah it was pretty much black with verdigris and I was using the flathead screwdriver on my swiss army knife (it's kind of rounded so it's not as harsh) to scrape it off the grooves in the bag and off the turnlock itself since my fingernail wasn't enough.

I don't think most Coach stores would have them in stock. My Coach store had them but it was because the manager had been hoarding them.

Up until recently, you could call Coach and they would send you a replacement turnlock. Now with the new repair policy, I don't know that they would.
Meh, if they can send me one I'm pretty capable of installing it. I think part of the problem is with the Lenox it's going through 2 layers of leather instead of the usual one so it's twice as thick. (And of course who knows what the previous owner did to the bag.)

One of my older rehabs came with a turnlock with a missing prong. I think it was my City Bag. I always meant to get a replacement but I would never have noticed it was broken until I took it off to clean, and I did put it back on and it seems very secure.

I would try Coach first, but they are fairly cheap on eBay...one of these days I'll look into replacing mine, but that bag still isn't quite finished...:roflmfao:
I know what you mean. I've had a few sitting in my to-do pile that I keep thinking I can do more for. I'm thinking from what others have said, I'll stop by Coach tomorrow since I'll be in the general area of one. I looked on eBay last night and they were about $8 each.

You might like a stewardess. Here's an example. I love mine--it has a couple extra pockets (one I like to use for mail I need to send and a smaller one for coupons I'm planning to use.) The main pocket is just big enough that it can hold everything I need. The flap over the front protects everything without a zipper and uses a turnlock for closure. The added bonus is it's fairly easy to find one that's in need of rehabbing, but unfortunately it's also fairly common to also find fakes.

Wow I have not seen on here for a while! It is nice to be back! I was wondering what you guys think about dunking this bag. I think it is orange. Normally I would have no problem, but there is a funky spot on the bottom and I would hate for it to bleed through. It feels crusty, plastic like.. Hmm also there are some pen marks but nothing horrible! What do you think? I think it could benefit from a clean. But I guess it is not totally nesassary, but I'm not sure the front is kind of dirty! Any opinions would be great! I can't wait to start on this project. Also the sides have look piping leather, would you just glue that? Sew it? Unfortunately I put the bag away and forgot to take a pic of the sides. But what would you recommend? Thank you so much!!

It looks like fingernail polish to me. I would turn the bag inside out and work on it with acetone. If it doesn't budge, it probably won't bleed if dunked. If the ink isn't thick, it shouldn't bleed when you dunk. I think this bag would really benefit from dunking after you address the gunk.

Any suggestions are welcome! Here is the Coach Hampton Blue Suede Bag Registration C33-9579. It doesn't look too bad in the photos but it's very dirty. The suede is in good shape - no bare spots, rips or tears. I brushed it yesterday with a toothbrush and a microfiber cloth and that helped to lift some of the surface dirt. The lining has no pen marks, stains, or cuts. However, it needs a very good cleaning inside and out. Hoping that it can be dunked - it smells very musty.

Thank you!
Mary

Welcome Mary...this is a beautiful bag and should rehab well. I've done lots of suede, usually with good results. More comments below...

Congratulations on your first rehab. She looks great and a lovely colour.

I agree with Whateve about avoiding using oil on suede. I have only heard of one conditioner that is supposedly suitable for suede but I have not used it. Kali Leather Life. The seller I bought Black Rock from raved about it. I think Whateve has used it on smooth leather but didn't think it was anything special.

JOODLZ has had some good results cleaning suede and I have had mixed results. I use vinegar and bi-carb (baking soda) and scrub with a toothbrush then wash in soapy water, rinse thoroughly and stuff. When still damp brush with a suede brush. Good luck!

I agree with two.time.bags, though I use baking soda by itself (no vinegar) and scrub with a nailbrush in a circular motion while in a warm, Dawn bath. I also continue to brush suede as it dries to further lift the nap. Check out pages 348 and 363 (sorry I don't have access to links in this computer) for 2 Soho suede hobo rehabs...one I used baking soda, the other just a bath. Good luck...can't wait to see.

I agree with Whateve, this bag would really benefit from a bath, and if acetone doesn't shift that stuff, it's likely nothing will. It might even peel off once you can get to it. Perhaps try that before acetone. Not sure what you mean about the piping without seeing it. If the stitching has come undone then re-sew, don't glue.

Hello,
What a pretty bag and functional! Thank you so much for the suggestion. Coach is hard to resist - the quality really stands up over time. I've learned so much from this forum. I'll have to look at the tutorial again on how to spot a fake.

Thank you!
Mary
