Mary, I love the bag you're working on. It looks great! I've only rehabbed 5 or 6 bags so far but gosh, I feel almost like a pro with each one I do. They're not perfect but seeing an older, worn bag come back to life right in front of your eyes is a good feeling.

Hint...roll up your hand towels or wash cloths before stuffing your bag with them. No lumps/bumps this way. lol Keep up the good work.

Thank you all for the nice comments and the great tip!

The bag was in good condition with no tears or cuts to the lining or the leather. It was dirty (a lot of smudge marks from use) with only a few very small scratches and a few pen marks. Hoping to take her out next weekend!

I'm still shocked that she could look this good after using soap and water! Not perfect but the blemishes add to the character. DH encouraged me to try it. I only paid $18 for this bag.

I've been reading katev's posts about cleaning suede and started making a list of supplies (emu oil). Would love to hear any additional tips about rehabbing Coach suede - that project is still several weeks away and makes me nervous! Blue suede makes my heart melt-cautiously optimistic that it will be a pretty color under all of that grime.

I would think really hard about using emu oil. In most cases, you don't want to put any oil or conditioner on suede. In Katev's case, the bag was brown and in very bad condition. Suede responds well to scrubbing with a fingernail brush. Your bag might be a candidate for washing in the machine. If you get a chance, post pictures of it.

Any suggestions are welcome! Here is the Coach Hampton Blue Suede Bag Registration C33-9579. It doesn't look too bad in the photos but it's very dirty. The suede is in good shape - no bare spots, rips or tears. I brushed it yesterday with a toothbrush and a microfiber cloth and that helped to lift some of the surface dirt. The lining has no pen marks, stains, or cuts. However, it needs a very good cleaning inside and out. Hoping that it can be dunked - it smells very musty.

Thank you!
Mary

Congratulations on your first rehab. She looks great and a lovely colour.

I agree with Whateve about avoiding using oil on suede. I have only heard of one conditioner that is supposedly suitable for suede but I have not used it. Kali Leather Life. The seller I bought Black Rock from raved about it. I think Whateve has used it on smooth leather but didn't think it was anything special.

JOODLZ has had some good results cleaning suede and I have had mixed results. I use vinegar and bi-carb (baking soda) and scrub with a toothbrush then wash in soapy water, rinse thoroughly and stuff. When still damp brush with a suede brush. Good luck!

Aghh!! I totally messed up while rehabbing my lenox bag. I removed the turnlock so I could get a good cleaning on it (there was a TON of verdigris on the brass) and I bent one of the prongs on the turnlock just right and it FELL OFF. Anyone know if I can walk into a Coach store with the turnlock in my hand and ask for a replacement?

That's a nice bag. I think someone has rehabbed that same bag. It is somewhere in this thread. My only concern would be the brown leather bleeding onto the rest of the bag.

Oh wow, it must have been bad. I don't know if Coach stores will be able to help, but you can buy them on ebay.

I don't think most Coach stores would have them in stock. My Coach store had them but it was because the manager had been hoarding them.

Up until recently, you could call Coach and they would send you a replacement turnlock. Now with the new repair policy, I don't know that they would.

One of my older rehabs came with a turnlock with a missing prong. I think it was my City Bag. I always meant to get a replacement but I would never have noticed it was broken until I took it off to clean, and I did put it back on and it seems very secure.

I would try Coach first, but they are fairly cheap on eBay...one of these days I'll look into replacing mine, but that bag still isn't quite finished...:roflmfao:

I'd be careful with the brown but I have a feeling it won't be an issue on that bag, so don't panic if you dunk it and get the leather wet.

I'd also be careful with oil on suede, it's almost impossible to get it on evenly and you might end up with spots. I've worked with a lot of suede, the last couple of times I put one in the washer I used fabric softner in the final rinse (probably Downy) and I *think* it helped with the stiffness that you sometimes get when washing suede. You could do the same thing with a sink dunk, just fill the sink with cold water and thourougly mix in the softener before putting the bag in. Again, not sure it does anything but it seems to, and as long as it's mixed the water it doesn't hurt anything.
