I got this vintage New York City basic bag in the mail today. Great condition. Beautiful. Little glued on number intact and everything. The anchor symbol on the strap clips. Nice bag! Except: this horrible smell attached to it. At first I thought it was smoke, but now I'm not sure, maybe rot. Or, mold. ?? Smells kind of like death--I went to a haunted museum in Las Vegas which had all these taxidermy things and evil objects. It smells sort of like that place. Unpleasant, no matter what! Anyway I just soaked with dawn dishwashing liquid. Two questions. One, how long do you wait after dunking to apply conditioner? Two, I haven't sniffed it carefully yet (right now it smells like wet leather), but if the weird smell is still there, what do you recommend? I've done coffee grounds in a sock in a bag with perfumy purses before...
I usually CPR about 2 hrs after dunking....but everyone has their own ritual when rehabbing. Find what works for you.

If it is still fairly wet, you might want to put it in a vinegar rinse before you let it dry. If there is mold, it will kill it. It also helps with odors. If that doesn't work, then after it is dry and conditioned, I would set it outside for a few days.

I just received a bag in the mail that has some scuffing on the piping. The leather is lighter in that area. If I dunk and recondition will it darken those areas and blend in? Or do I need to do something additional like paint or dye? The color of the bag is honey I believe.
Probably that is all it needs.

After the bath and one CPR finger massage. I'm so excited about this bag it is gorgeous. Thank you for the advice on smell. Edit: I looked for vinegar, and I don't have any in the house. I'll have to go get some tomorrow, and maybe, re-dunk. I didn't see any traces of mold when I examined the bag on arrival. I think it may be 40+ years of cigarette smoke.

Can you post a picture of the bag and of the light areas? I would probably try giving it a bath and conditioning it first.

Hi ladies, how are you doing?
I have a lime green Waverley Bag. I bought it in pretty bad shape. I've dunked, conditioned and buffed and she looks as though she still needs some work but I'm not experienced enough to know what to do. I took photos today with the plan in mind of selling low on eBay. I'll attach photos.
Would love your thoughts

I think it’s beautiful and you did an incredible job. Don’t short-change yourself. I think light-colored bags are difficult to rehab perfectly. I only have a few in Toffee & Camel. Most of my small collection is mahogany as they rehab so easily and look like new when finished. I’ve only been at this for a year, so I am sure the Coach rehab rockstars will have some amazing tips.

Aww thank you for your reply  I'm with you on the mahogany and darker colours. They're more forgiving colours and look lovely after a dunking

I agree that you did a great job and that dark colors are much more forgiving and easier to rehab. The leather of this bag is also soft and it wrinkles easily - but it is a gorgeous bag!

To decide if a rehab was successful I generally ask myself this question "Do you feel comfortable carrying this bag in public?" and if the answer is "No" then I usually decide to attempt more drastic measures - although I know that they may not work.

If this was my bag, I might try washing it again and more vigorously because it may need more than a dunk. Let it soak in Dawn suds and try spot-scrubbing the more soiled areas with soap and a soft brush. You could also tie it up in a pillow case or laundry bag and cycle it through the washer on gentle cycle and then stuff it to dry.

After washing, if I were still not satisfied, I might try using a matching color acrylic hobby paint mixed with Leather CPR to refresh the color, but that's a hard color to match and it would be a last resort for me, but there are others here that are more expert with dying and color refreshing then me.

Below are before and after pics of a similar lime green buckle bag that I rehabbed. It wasn't totally successful but I think that the bag was improved and it passed my test because I felt comfortable carrying it. Good luck!

Thank for your tips and reply. The leather is really soft with this bag. I think you're right and I'll need to dunk it again and spot clean. I don't feel comfortable using this bag just yet. But there are some parts where you can tell someone has used alcohol to remove a mark and it's rubbed off some of the colour. Yes you're absolutely right, this colour is really difficult to match. It's a fun colour. I'll dunk it again and regroup

I'm not very expert with paints and dyes, but when I decide that it's my best option I usually take the hangtag with me to Joann's Fabrics or the Hobby Store and I search for the best match among the acrylic hobby paints to mix with leather conditioner. (Don't lose the hangtag, I did that once!) Sometimes you have to mix colors to get a match and I am really not very good at that!

This is brilliant advice, thank you  There's a hobby craft in Greenwich I can go to. A part of me is feeling as though I may part ways with her though.

I've been eyeing that style for a while.. Love that color! I've had success with the lighter colors using this stuff to clean - it's PH balanced for leather and removes embedded grime. I used this on a glacier colored Maggie (very gently!) and it really helped!
