Have you removed kisslocks? On most of the vintage coin purses I've seen, the frame is covered with leather with just the knobs of the kisslock uncovered.

@DL Harper I forgot I rehabbed one of these! I'm pretty sure I dunked it and talked about it in this thread.

Here's a before and after.

I went back my kisslock bag and wondered if it would come off! Nope!
I am working on 2 turnlock bags right now and my mind is on turnlocks, sorry!
No need for apologies! Your mind was elsewhere, it happens to all of us.

I think it's just because I'm getting old!

I'm not sure if this is a rehab question, or belongs somewhere else...? I got this cute little bag, Coach 9993 and it's lost it's crossbody strap along the way. Does anyone know how to replace... How long should it be, how thick should it be? Sources for replacement? Any ideas of a different strap that would work?

I actually purchased a NWT Small Shopper 9993 specifically for the strap because I'd lost part of the strap to my aqua Lunch Box. I'm restoring the 9993 right now (along with a gorgeous aqua Large Duffle Sac) and might use a guitar strap with it. The strap for the 9993 is fantastic at 48"! It's longer than the Lunch Box's missing one. :flowers:

This is the pre-dunk photo. Both bags, although in excellent shape, had yellowed (as aqua tends to do). There will be some colour refreshing happening.

Wayback says it is a 48 inch adjustable strap. I think it looks like a Willis strap in terms of thickness. It has dogleash clips. Mahogany shouldn't be too hard to find, although there is a lot of varieties of mahogany. There are a few companies that make straps (Mautto) or you could buy a cheap bag for its strap. You could also buy a cloth strap, like a guitar strap, from some place like Amazon.View attachment 5361224

Here's the guitar strap I got on Etsy if I don't want to use the original leather one. :flowers: (Notice the bag has yellowed in areas)?

I just received a bag in the mail that has some scuffing on the piping. The leather is lighter in that area. If I dunk and recondition will it darken those areas and blend in? Or do I need to do something additional like paint or dye? The color of the bag is honey I believe.

I got this vintage New York City basic bag in the mail today. Great condition. Beautiful. Little glued on number intact and everything. The anchor symbol on the strap clips. Nice bag! Except: this horrible smell attached to it. At first I thought it was smoke, but now I'm not sure, maybe rot. Or, mold. ?? Smells kind of like death--I went to a haunted museum in Las Vegas which had all these taxidermy things and evil objects. It smells sort of like that place. Unpleasant, no matter what! Anyway I just soaked with dawn dishwashing liquid. Two questions. One, how long do you wait after dunking to apply conditioner? Two, I haven't sniffed it carefully yet (right now it smells like wet leather), but if the weird smell is still there, what do you recommend? I've done coffee grounds in a sock in a bag with perfumy purses before...
