wondering if anyone knows what’s going on with this 1997 saddle bag…The back looked beautiful when I got it, but the front flap was dull and dark. I washed it and no real change. CPR didn’t help. The texture on the front flap feels off too, although it is soft. Any ideas?

It might be faded if it was exposed to the sun during storage.

Did you try applying Black Rocks Leather n Rich? Sometimes that does a good job of restoring color and shine. It may not be an exact match but it may be nearer and shinier and look better.

Ladies I have a question about metallic leathers. I tried doing a search but I didn’t see anything about reviving with the exception of re-dying. Friend has a Parker Hippie in a champagne metallic color. This bag was during the time when the metallics were not as durable and I’m afraid she may be SOL. Is there a trick to reviving without dying metallics? I’ll add photos in a moment, thank you!

I dunked my Parker shoulderbag which is the same leather and metallic...it came out fine.
I just dunked and conditioned as normal

Is it just dirty, dull, and wrinkled or are there areas where the metallic finish have rubbed off? If it is mostly dirt, dull, and wrinkles then I would first try washing and stuffing it and conditioning it to see how it looks. But if there is actual rubbing damage to the metallic leather then more drastic steps may be needed after washing, shaping, and conditioning.

I am not much of an expert with using paints or dyes but when that's the best option I try to do my best. The link below shows before and after pics of a copper metallic Zoe bag that I once rehabbed. I bought the bag new and I loved it and used it a lot, especially when walking back and forth to the train station during my daily work commute - but to my horror the metallic copper finish rubbed off in areas on the back of the bag and it looked terrible.

I took the hangtag to a hobby store and bought a small bottle of metallic acrylic paint that was a very close color match. Next I mixed the paint with conditioner and painted it on the back of the bag. I had to paint the entire back side of the bag to keep it from looking spotty. It came out well, not perfect but much improved, and I was able to continue carrying the bag.

Good luck, my first Coach bag was a Parker Hippie and I still love it!

It's amazing that this post showed up for me today because it's perfect information for what I need to do with my new rehab ready bag that also arrived today.

Hello! I am a pretty recent rehab enthusiast and have caught the rehab bug from you all. I am going to do my first rehab on this bag.

Plan to dunk, dry with towels to reshape, and then use CPR. Any thoughts about getting the bottom to be flat? Is that going to happen through the drying process?

Thank you!

Welcome! Yes, once the leather gets fully hydrated after being in water, you can see it will be easy to use the towels to give it a boxy shape while drying. The fold in the bottom will flatten out.
That bag will make a great rehab project!

Ohhh, so even with that burgundy interior it was fine? That was my biggest concern for her since dark interiors have a tendency to bleed color.
mine does has a light interior but I had no bleeding from the leather at all.

I haven't had any problems with color bleeding from the cloth lining of a bag, including black lined bags. Only occasionally has it been a concern that a dark leather bag might run and stain the cloth lining.

An example is the mahogany Legacy Thompson Julia at the links below. It really needed a bath but the water started turning brown as soon as I dunked it. I had to give it a quick bath and keep changing the water and rinsing the legacy-striped lining, but it came out fine and didn't stain the lining.

I think I had bleeding from a Sonoma lining. That was probably 100% cotton. I don't think more recent bags had cotton linings. Synthetics don't usually bleed.

So, my Coach is done.
I did start with dyeing only piping, but the dye had blue undertones not matching the rest of the bag, so yeah I just dyed the whole bag. Two coats on most worn parts, one on the rest. Then two layers of leather balm, lots of elbow grease later, it looks great!

Thank you everyone for your input. The wealth of knowledge on this forum is incomparable.
(I have scrolled through a lot of it and taken notes for future reference)

I've also since discovered that there is leather balm for black leather items available in my country, so that would have definitely saved some time!

I just got this bag. Here's a question. Someone here was discussing the same stitched strap. They put it on a different vintage bag. and the results were stunning! Does anyone remember that post (searched and can't find). I think I might copycat. Question number two: best method of cleaning suede?

I haven't had much luck with Nubuc but rehabbing Suede can be rewarding. I've posted these links below several times but they show the successful rehab of a light-colored suede bag in bad original condition IMO. I did a lot to this poor bag, including cycling it through the washer and it survived.

Make sure that you have a suede brush on hand so you can brush it and make sure that the nap is lying nicely when you are done cleaning it.

Nice bag, please let us know how it turns out!
