I’m looking for some opinions on how I could make this handle look a little better on my Copley. I was thinking leather cement or leather glue on the portion that attaches to the top of the bag to fill in and then acrylic paint mixed with conditioner. In person you can see that some of the leather is kind of missing or just cracked from stress. But what about all the cracks on the edging? I imagine if I paint over that it’s just going to look cakey and then crack again. Should I lightly sand off the coating all along the edge? Then paint? Thanks for any help I’m going to need it lol

I agree with you about the cracking returning after a while. There are products specifically formulated for this type of use, that might hold up better than regular acrylic paint over time.

You might be interested in this post about re-doing edges. She completely replaced the edge paint on an Hermès bag using Vernis Edge Paint.

I won’t feel complete until I have one of the Italian Madison bag dust bags. I feel like my Mandarin Copley deserves it lol

They are scarce and they can be pricey and a lot of them are small - so make sure you get one that will work for a larger bag like a Copley. I was very lucky to get this one with the Drake and I also used ebay bucks to buy a small one for my Gracie. I figured she deserved it because she started my obsession with Italian Coach bags!

Could you speak into my good ear? She....removed...the existing edge and replaced it? On an Hermes? WOW that result tho. I would have been too terrified to try.

The Butter Copley will difficult to repair because the color is so light and unique. I had a similar problem with the handle at the base of my Forest Green Drake Briefbag but it didn't have cracking all the way up the handle, the wear damage was only at the base.

I used a process similar to what you are suggesting:

First I used a toothpick to apply small amounts of fabric glue to the damaged area and let it try to try and stabilize it and prevent future damage.

Then I mixed 2 shades of green acrylic paint (forest and olive) with Leather CPR conditioner to get the approximate correct shade and then added tiny amounts of black acrylic paint to get the proper shade - as close as possible to the original.

Maybe you could do something similar with buff or camel paints and add white paint to adjust the color?

Then I used a tiny paint brush to apply very small amounts of the mixture to cover the damaged areas and let them dry. I try to avoid using much paint because it is possible the color may change slightly over time.

Finally I conditioned with Leather Therapy and Restorer.

It might be better to paint the entire handle of your Copley because the damage is extensive and it would be so difficult to spot fix. Good luck!

I just read this yesterday! I can’t believe what an amazing job she did and it’s got me wondering if I can attempt it myself lol I’d be ok with results half as good as hers and I’d only need to do the handle and maybe the strap. Thanks!

Thank you! I’ll be deciding if I want to just try and cover the corners that attach the handle to the top or trying the do the whole handle. I think the handle makes the rest of the bag look worse than it is unfortunately. And I have a pristine Black with Butter sides Copley which makes this Butter one look so sad lol

One of my saddle bags has the softest interior suede you have ever felt in your life. It is almost as soft as my cat. I'm guessing its because the fibers are a bit longer than the other bags I have. I have not dunked this one because I am worried about ruining the super soft feel of the interior. It is not particularly dry on the outside, but the sides are a little smushed so I was thinking about a dunk but learning towards not. Any thoughts on that soft suede interior being dunked?

Dunking will change it, but after using the bag for a while, it should become soft again. I would go with your gut feeling, because you can always dunk it in the future, but you can't undunk it.

So got these to sad sacks off mercari for $22 total! Aaaaand they're NYC! I've wanted a collegiate (the flap and turnlock) and its navy!! I believe the other is called camera bag. Both need a bath and some conditioning.
Did you get the fake Kate Spade bag with them? Lol
I purchased previously but returned them. Do you think the collegiate is shoe polished? They’re great nyc bags!
