The Hollister rehab was my most time consuming project. It was in good shape but smelled as if it had spent most of its life in an unsanitary attic. I couldn’t bear to be in the same room with it.
After washing and rinsing in vinegary water, it still reeked. I enclosed it in a garbage bag for 6 days, the first three sprinkled with a total of 4 boxes of baking sofa, twice, then another 3 filled with a 50/50 water vinegar mix, again twice (a total of 1 gallon of Vinegar). The fluid did not leak but The bag still smelled nasty.
I then put it into a gigantic perforated laundry bag and put it into the washer (front loading) with several tablespoons of Lexol cleaner and the bleach dispenser filled with vinegar.
After several rinses it came out smelling nice.
After the many washings it looked parched, crying out for moisture. So I drenched it in the much maligned (unfairly, IMO) Obenauf oil and put it on the boot/sweater tray over a towel in the dryer at low temp. Repeated it one more time and let it dry.
After a good brushing, I applied 9 (I counted) coats of Leather CPR, brushing between each massage. Then 2 Blackrock applications and a bit of colour
on a few spots and it was done, smelling just of new leather.
The brown leather did darken but I rather like it with the green. There is a listing of a Hollister showing the original trim colour
