That article comparing the leather to stained wood makes a lot of sense to me and now I see my faded bags differently. Its just the leather shining through under the clear aniline dye.
Agree though I do think certain colors look better faded than others. The Stewardess I'm working on had a lot of greyish patches and am relieved to see the black even out so well post-dunking. I don't think the black Coaches look as good "beat up". Brown leather, on the other hand, looks cool with uneven patina and fading. My other NYC bag is a dark brown Companion bag. I have never dunked it, just condition from time to time, and I don't mind the uneven parts as it gives it that rugged look.

Good luck to you! I just used Dawn soap and water for my Carlyle bag.

I came back first to thank you for your encouragement, I did gave it a bath and no red anywhere, it is drying now after the first coat of conditioner.

Unfortunately, now I have to ask for more help, because I do not know what happened to the clips at the end of the strap, that turned like "milky...? The rest of the hardware is still in the brass color, but the clips that matched before now they are different. I imagine that has to do with the kind of metal, but what happened? Any ideas on how to return the color?

Buff the hardware with a cloth, it happens.

Exactly. They just need reshining. I have this happen to me several days after I've cleaned the hardware.

I agree except for this Willis. It looked gray and gross until a bath and conditioner and now it's just got this nice almost brownish glow under the black. It's hard to describe. My black Court Bag looked terrible though. I had to correct the color.

I had that Dakota on my watch list for a while but, after exercising all the willpower I could muster, decided that it would fill the same niche as the Hollister.
I didn’t mention that I put on Obenauf LP (after insufficient coffee consumption), thinking it was Black Rock, let that dry, brushed, and then followed up with the last Black Rock massage. I don’t know what effect, if any, that had.
Do please share your rehab of the Dakota.

I'm glad you left it for me to "harvest." Thanks!

I'm not going to dunk it. It came today and it's in amazing condition, just needs reshaping. But both zippers have a corrosion problem. The inside zipper turned completely black and wouldn't budge. I rubbed a cloth soaked in vinegar over it and cleaned off some of the black stuff, and it's sliding now, thank goodness. The top zipper isn't as bad but it still needs work. Otherwise the bag is clean and shows little signs of use. I'm thrilled to get it because I never thought I'd find one I could afford.

I'll definitely post pictures!

Glad you got it. I was eyeing it for a while, but then decided I have too many large bags.

A little rehab story. My little NYC collegiate bag turned out awesome! It took so much scrubbing though, unfortunately it was dyed. As soon as it hit the water it was like I slaughtered the whole smurf village...so much blue. Also first time I took off hardware, it was super gross. This little guy has that tough nyc leather that I always hope to find, so it tolerated being man handled. The nyc camera bag I got with this one, however didnt fair so well, it was shoe polished *shakes fist* and the leather became rough, sticky, and dull. I used leather restorer vs. CPR, that may or may not have had something to do with it. I just wanted the collegiate so for $22 I'm happy with one successful keeper rehab. Before and after.

She has a beautyful burnished look to her, why would someone cover that up with paint?

I had been meaning to ask.. How is your pup doing? Any progress?
Define progress, I rushed her back to the vet Monday morning after both of us spend a sleepless night. Not the same vet, she was in a lot of pain and there was an odor coming from the cast. They removed the cast immediately it was a mess under there. The cast was on to tight and it caused sores to develop to make it short it was a bloody mess. Now the cast is off but the open wounds have closed and are healing. She is back on antibiotics and pain killers and another vet visit next monday.
Her royal highness wishes to be hand fed and watered of course is getting carried to go to the bathroom.
In the meantime I'm sweating bullets because that foot is not fully healed from the break but until the sores heal she can't go in to a splint.
Not sure how coherent all this is but when it comes to my puppers I'm not a very rational dog mommy.
