If a lot of color comes off, this means there’s polish on it? Would you advise to then wipe the whole thing with acetone and then re-dunk the bag? Then condition it like crazy?
Sorry I meant if little color comes off, there means no polish on it. I actually already suspect something is up. I saw this morning before I left that it’s already pretty much dry when it usually takes 2-3 days for all my other bags after dunking.

Thanks to everyone for their helpful tips on here!

I have this black court bag that is currently being dunked. When I first got it I noticed that the leather seemed fairly shinier than my other black bags and also stiffer. As I’m washing it, it doesn’t seem to be getting “softer” like the other bags I’ve washed.

I looked up some things here in this thread and I was wondering if that’s a sign of someone using shoe polish or something similar on it? Or am I just being paranoid and different bags just respond differently to baths? I would post photos but the ones I have don’t really show the shine. Maybe I can try after it dries.

Yes, and yes.

How long did you leave it in the bath? Maybe it didn't get completely saturated. That would mean it would dry faster.

It's possible something other than shoe polish was used on it.

Sometimes a bag that hasn't been carried much will feel stiffer. Maybe it wasn't used much, and never conditioned.

Are you sure it's authentic? (Have to ask.)

It's true that different bags respond differently to the bath.

It’s authentic, checked with the AT thread before dunking it. It was in the bath for about 40 mins. total. I just thought it was weird how shiny it was when I got it, how stiff it was, and how quickly it dried. I’ll try the cotton ball with acetone tonight. Thanks for the tips! I’m learning a lot.

All done. I am happy with how it turned out because it was in pretty bad shape. I had to use a bit of Apple Barrel Real Navy paint mixed with CPR for the corners and the strap. One coat of Blackrocks after 3 coats of CPR. I bought some Flitz polish and I can't believe how easy and well it works with cotton swabs and a paper towel!

After and a pic of the difference in the grommets after Flitz.

Ooh they made it with a thicker strap? Nice! My black station is from the 1989-1993 timeframe and it has the thin strap.

Yeah I have two station bags and they have different straps. The earlier one has the thinner, and shorter strap. The later one has the thicker, longer and adjustable strap. The thicker strap is more comfortable but if you aren’t very tall or prefer a shorter crossbody, then even at the shortest setting that strap is quite long.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'm not quite 5 ft 5 and have basically no boobs so I do like the shorter strap. But I haven't had a chance to carry the station yet.

I have a navy one coming as well...well I hope its navy and not black..we will se when its arrives.
i hope it comes out like yours with wonderful colour.

I tried wiping some acetone on it and not a ton of color came off (though I don’t really know what’s a lot vs. a little... it was comparable to if I were trying to get rid of an ink stain using rubbing alcohol). What are some other possibilities other than shoe polish that it could be? It feels smooth on the outside, almost slippery/plasticky. I somewhat regret getting this bag now. I wish I had sensed the difference when I decided to buy it at the thrift store.

It might have been recolored. Some products can change the surface texture of the leather, almost like a coat of paint.

Leather Refinisher can have that feel. I've had it peel off with a hot bath and a little scrubbing.

I’ve been stalking this thread for awhile, loving everybody’s rehabs. I thought there is no way I could perform their magic, I was lucky this bag wasn’t too bad so good start for me; but now anxious to continue my learning!
People have posted some amazing transformations and interesting rehabs. A thorough cleaning and conditioning does a lot and is a good way to start. As you now know, great! I am still doing mostly basic cleaning/conditioning work myself. Life has been busy, sigh. I still have a healthy rehab pile, and I want to do some color touch ups. And now I have it in my head to dye a bag purple!
