It looks like you can just dunk the bottom part where the dirt is. Pull the lining out so it doesn't soak through. I've never had a problem with water stains from only washing part of a bag. If the stains don't come out, try Soilove. I've used it on a glam and it works great.

Thanks whateve and everyone else and thanks to catshandbags for posting pics. I'm looking at one on the 'bay with stains in the same area! If I can get it cheap enough it should be worth it!

Ok finally got pictures taken, in full sun. This is after bath, stuffing, one application of Leather CPR, and two apps of Lexol. It's super soft and shiny right now because I did the second coat of Lexol this morning!

Anyway, in the full sunlight, I am back to thinking burgundy, but I want to know if you all agree!

Presenting, vintage Coach Convertible Clutch!
Whatever color it turns out to be, I love it. Very pretty.

I try to avoid using soap or detergent on leather bags when I can for just that reason. I will usually just soak the bag under water for an hour or so and then will clean the surface with saddle soap using a soft toothbrush or microfiber cloth. That way I am not stripping out any oil the leather already has.

If the bag is actually grimy, I will go "tough love" and wipe down the surface with acetone before it goes in the bath. The acetone removes any finishes like wax or polish and takes the grimy layer with it. I will condition after the bath with mink oil and finish with Fiebing's leather balm with atom wax and a good buff with a shoe shine brush to get a mellow finish.

If the bag has an odor, I will add a splash of Febreze to the water (the kind that comes in a spray bottle). The odor will almost alway disappear once the bag is dry.
Hi netlawyer,

When you say you wipe it down with acetone, do you use nail polish remover or do you use 100% acetone?

Thanks.

It's hard to tell. It could be grease. Is there any bleedthrough to the inside? I would try to clean it before the bath, maybe with Soilove. The problem I have with stains like these is that once the bag gets wet, I can't see them anymore even if they are still there. The last bag I washed, the stains disappeared in the bath.

No they do not bleed through, what exactly is soilove and where can I find it?

Ladies, I'm working on that ergo I spoke of earlier. I have never used the black rock before. I just applied one coat how long before a second should be applied, and how exactly should it be used? Do I just rub it in and let it dry or should I do something else?

Put it on sparingly. Wipe off almost immediately with a paper towel and buff. If you leave it on, it might become sticky but eventually it will all soak in and the stickiness should disappear. I usually separate coats by at least half a day.

Sorry to y'all for posting that in so many separate posts, I was doing it on my phone and I was afraid it was going to crash if I tried to much at once. I have done some small rehabs that haven't posted, but I figured a successful suede clean up was worth sharing.

Amazing transformation! Congrats..

Thanks! I was really afraid it wouldn't come out and I had wasted my money. Turns out I love it!

Wow! It's like new!

You can tell it's not a brand new bag in real life, but it's clean, no stains, and any darkening in the pictures is really from the nap in the suede, not dirt. I still need to put some black rocks on the straps, but I packed it away for now because I am trying to carry my more summery styles.

She's a beauty, and looks great on you! Great job!

Yeah, it makes me look almost half my age! and now the papparazi follow me everywhere!

I love this! Now you made me want one! I got outbid on a lot of two suede bags and a nubuck bag today. I need to stop looking!

You're a dead ringer for Mischa Barton! :roflmfao:

I need to stay off the 'bay. I just bought a Bleecker Pocket Hobo that I couldn't resist. I'm done, really!
