Wow , ok I'm going to try tuff stuff first.. If easily found! thenI'm going to try a bath! The bag is tan or light brown with chocolate leather trim and brass hardware.. .. I'm excited to get started!! Anything different I should do considering the color. I'm wondering about the pillowcase trick and just giving that a shot first at least as step 1 since it is so darned stained... I think....

Light colors are difficult to clean, that is true of both glove-tanned smooth leather and suede. Can you post pictures of your bag?

I have a completely filthy suede daphne that I was going to toss... Until I poked around a bit on YouTube and here . A girl on YouTube said "tuff stuff" cleaner for suede.. Lots of good reviews. And then I looked here .., a bath for suede??!! Did I read that right??!! I suppose there's nothing to lose if I was going to Toss it .. But what was technique?? I didn't think suede would stand up to that ?!!?? Anyone ever try tuff stuff???

Definitely post pics to have others chime in, but I just had really good results washing a medium blue suede duffle( it was very dirty, too much to spot clean), in the washer in a nylon bag. I removed the strap first, didnt wash it because it was fine. However, I brushed the suede white it was still fairly damp, and vontinued to brush it a few times as it was drying. The suede stayed soft and didn't get crunchy. It lookes a thousand times better. I carried it last week!

Ok not sure you are ready to see how dirty.... But here it is!!

It's super dirty so the washing machine idea is appealing but I am concerned about the strap and the rest of the leather ... Can't remove this strap... But I did find tuff stuff at Walmart! Unbelievable if it works! I will keep you posted and look forward to any more advice now that pics are up!! Thanks ladies

So, this is my story: I lurked on this thread and decided I knew enough to rehab a purse.

I found a duffle on ebay that I liked. I ordered and when it got to me, it was in good shape. The thought of carrying somebody else's purse was kind of gross so I machine washed it. It turned out great.

That makes me an expert rehabber, right? So, I pulled out one of my own old bags. It had ink on it so I tried to get it out. With alcohol. It did get most of the ink out but now it has abig old bleach spot. I'd:-)show you but I don't know how to pst photos.

Has anybody successfully covered a bleach spot? What did you use.

Looking forward to see how well tuff stuff works. I put it on my shopping list.

I would try to spot clean the worst of tbe dirt with the tuff stuff, then depending on the results, wash in the sink or the washer. Not sure about the braided strap though. Wait for other opinions. :-)

Others here have suede experience too.

Ok I'll wait on the washing machine until I hear other opinions but I'm hoping to try tuff stuff tonight! I'll keep you posted

@scameron: I like this style. I think its worth trying to rehab. I'm curious to see how it turns out.

ok, so here it is after using tough stuff.. but it is damp..,.,so we wait until morning for true results..... you can see the dark area is where i used it. But, honestly if using this is different than immersing it completely, I am a skeptic. You spray the foam on and then I scrubbed with a soft toothbrush, then you wipe it with a damp cloth. by the time you have done all of that, it is very damp... so why not just give a bath? especially since this is so dirty... when I wipe it with a damp cloth, the dirt just keeps appearing on the cloth. At least if I gave a bath, I would feel like it is as clean as it could possibly get.. But with surface washing and wiping, the dirt just keeps appearing and appearing.. reminds of when you try to remove ink.. it just never gets out completely. But then the leather straps I worry about.... I did buy woolite today .. I think "sensitive" I bought... I have a front loader, so it does not agitate, it kind of tosses around when put on gentle.
I will post a pic in the morning when it is dry. Since I have never done this before, I will have no idea if it is a good result or not.. I will depend on you girls. It is late.. I have Jimmy Fallon on tv and a vodka soda on my work table.. along with tuff stuff, stain, polyurethane and spackle ( I also refinish furniture.). My three kids and hubby asleep.. I guess this is normal???!

So here it is this morning....looks pretty good. note, I only worked on the front mostly below the zipper, so other areas are still very dirty. It was stiff just like I used water, so Im not sure if this is a better result or similar to what I would have gotten with a bath, or other suede cleaners..... and it still needs more work... and its alot of work to do it this way.. scrub wipe scrub wipe.. I brushed it a little and its pretty soft again. I may try to work on this with some woolite sensitve, but not really fully immerse so I can protect the straps. I will just kind of do it on the edge of the sink and then rinse.... Even though the front looks pretty good, I know it is still dirty and I think with this level of soiling, water may be the only way to go. But if you have a spot on suede, the tough stuff seems to work pretty well.. but an entire bag? too much work probably, at least for me. Anyone have any thoughts on putting the entire bag in the wash, straps and all?

I think that if it is really dirty, it might not wash out without scrubbing. So if you put it in the wash, it could still come out dirty. Scrubbing it like you have seems like it would be more likely to remove the dirt. I don't think the washer would damage the bag. I wouldn't worry so much about how the leather will handle it, but more about whether the dark leather will bleed on the suede.

Right... Leather bleed! Thanks..

So I did just attack a spot with some woolite... Nowhere near the results of tuff stuff. The amount of soil that wiped off after using tuff stuff was far greater. So now my plan is a tuff stuff sponge bath.. A combo of the apply/scrub/wipe method but adding in rinsing without straps getting wet. Edges seem toughest as they are black and seem hard to loosen dirt on those areas

I've washed light blue leather with dark blue trim, that didn't bleed and the similar brown leather didn't bleed on my flint Zoe either.

I've treated a softer, less structured suede bag of that color that was dirtier than that by pretreating with shout and running through the wash. I have washed a bag with leather straps like that and there was no problem. Keep in mind we're always guessing with this stuff but if you can't get it clean enough I would think about washing it but throw in a lot of old towels to cushion it's ride.

Good luck! Cute bag. Can't wait to are how it turns out!

Hello, I have a legacy duffle that has a small tear in the strap. The picture is attached. I also just won another duffle on Ebay listed here http://www.ebay.com/itm/COACH-XL-LA...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 that has cracks in the straps. Do any of the ladies here have any advice on repairing the tear and cracks? I thought about glueing the tear done but I think it will be too noticable. TIA, robin0714
