Hi everyone, I had a question for you rehabbing experts: Do you think this is salvageable at all??
I inwardly cringled seeing that and reading the description :( This poor poor purse...

Item Description: "Bag does have discoloration due to spilling soda on it. Instead of taking to leather cleaner my daughter tried to clean with water- then tried soaking. The result is leather is hard and is discolored. If you ask me, it actually adds to the charm of the bag and makes it look weathered. There are also a couple of diet spots on interior of bag. Please see all pictures. Bag has scratches on back where she stubbed to get soda off. Please ask questions."

Wow thats a lot of moolah...!!

Ready for my reveal of my pink suede Hobo!! Katev gave me the courage to try emu oil on it after she had success with her brown suede bag. Thank you Katev!! I applied it with my fingertips and it drank it right up....I was concerned because the bag looked quite blotchy - it was impossible to cover up every square inch of the bag with oil. I waited 12 hours and applied more, concentrating on the areas that looked like I didn't get the first time. All together, I used about 2 ounces of oil! I waited 24 hours and brushed and.......voila! a beautiful bag!!! It is soft and the color is deeper and richer. some before and after pics:

BEFORE: YIKES!!

It looks great, I am glad that it worked for you!

KateV did a posting on verdigris in this thread somewhere. I'll try to find it, but meanwhile, I just did a bag full of verdigris and it MOSTLY came off. I am still working on it in stages. The hardest part is the stained leather-I haven't gotten that fixed yet. For the brass, I just had to use a toothbrush, qtips, tooth pick, and lots of pieces of clean scrap soft cloth, and I made a paste of vinegar and baking soda and put coat after coat onto the verdigris'd brass and just used muscle power to wipe off what I could with clean cloths, and you pretty much have to pick it off with toothpick etc. I did a lot of this DURING it's bath dunking so I could just keep rinsing off the work I'd done and see what I had to deal with as I went along. If you are worried about over dunking, you can do the verdigris paste thing first and then clean & rinse the bag later. I am also going to google this some more because I want to figure out a faster or better way if there is one. But the paste mentioned above is safe and gentle for starters.

:D..I think you are right..remove the verdigris while soakin..dont want the green slime to migrate on this light bag!! Then maybe throw it in the machine..we will see! THANKS Sheri

I also have some mercer bags that need rehab. I feel comfortable about dunking the black bags but I also have a light blue one trimmed with black leather and I am worried about washing that one.

I would also be interested to hear advice about rehabbing mercer bags.
Hi ladies - In case anyone is interested in washing black Mercer bags, I did after reading that Katev was comfortable with doing it. I have 4 different ones so put them each in a pillowcase and did 2 separate washes in the machine on delicate with a littel Fab or All or whatever I have. Stuffed and let them dry for a few days, touched up the leather trim with some Leather CPR and they look great! Easy! Thanks as always Katev for giving me courage. :smile1:

Thanks Katev and LatetothteParty! So, now we know that the emu oil is safe to condition light and dark suede bags....yay!

I have a question/concern for you. Have you noticed any odors from your pink suede bag? I am very sensitive to strong odors, that's why I picked emu oil to use on my brown tote and wristlet, because it doesn't have much scent.

I have now noticed a smell on my brown suede bag. It is not strong or nasty but I do notice it. The thing is that I don't know what has caused the smell. Is this something that happens when emu oil ages or is it something else?

We had a small house-fire a few weeks ago. Everything is okay now but it took more than a week of cleaning, scrubbing and airing to get the smell out of the house!

My brown suede bag and wristlet were sitting out in the open when the fire happened, so I don't know if that is the reason for the odor. I haven't noticed any problems with glove tanned leather bags that I have treated with emu oil in the past.

If we ever get some nice weather I am going to try to put the bag and wristlet outside to air them out. Please let me know if your pink suede bags begins to develop any odors.

One good thing is that we can always rewash them to remove the oil if we have to! Maybe I will try leather therapy on my next suede rehab. I know that it has a strong, persistent odor - but it is kind of pleasant smelling!

I am pretty sensitive to smell since I quit smoking years ago....and I didn't notice any smell at all.....I just went to smell it close up and it smells like nothing but I am getting over a cold, so....I'll give it a week and smell again and get back to you. I do like the smell of the Leather therapy....I'm one of those pine/eucalyptus girls when I'm buying Yankee candles so that smell is one I like!

I'm thinking that the smell is probably from the smoke but I would be interested to hear how your bag holds up overtime, thanks!

wow, this turned out so beautifully!!!

Wow, Socmoe, from back east, no wonder you find so many COACH bags in your thrift shops, I'm originally from N.Y. but I live in AZ now, no such luck finding purses in any thrift store in my area. I found that bottle of Soilove at my
99 Cents Only store, wanna try on a little trail bag that I won, that has ink marks on (luckily) only the insides. How did the removal your red Patricia's Legacy ink stains turn out?

What part of AZ? My father lives in Sun Lakes and I'm planning a visit to him. I was hoping the thrift stores there would have more than my local ones.

I live in Tucson, and I hit up the the thrift shops frequently, I've only found one in two months, and they wanted 50 bucks, that is no bargain, especially for a basic small black bag, which was a mess.
