Well, I'm in the middle of my 1st rehab and my little black messenger bag is looking marvelous!! It's been about 24 hours and i just applied some Leather CPR and am still drying it out...on to the next project.....a very ambitious one....below are pics of a salmon colored suede duffle (#8A16) I bought off of Ebay which BeenBurned kindly authenticated. It looks like there are pen marks, and lots of black marks that look like someone drove over the bag with their tires? Hope not, but wondering what you ladies think I should do for rehab? Someone (sorry that I cannot remember who - maybe tetondeb or Jessi?) said that I can clean like I do the vintage leather but pull the lining out while drying? Oh, there is good news the lining is......immaculate!:p

Should I pretreat before the soak? any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks!!

okay, I followed Ledobe's excellent instructions (thanks Ledobe :)) and was quite aggressive - used the Spray and Wash, hairspry on pen marks, laundry detergent (All or Fab), and scrubbed with soft toothbrush - let soak too many minutes to count and washed THREE times in the washer machine on delicate cycle with 2 handtowels....(let it run full cylcle including spin all 3 times and later realized I probably wasn't supposed to but metal looks fine)....suede looks............GREAT!! VERY clean and yes, it is faded a bit but still a pretty pink.......now what? I would say it is 3/4 dry, maybe? I did not receive my suede kit (back order) so no brush....should I rub suede with a nubby washcloth to raise it up a bit NOW or wait until it is completely dry? THANK YOU ALL! You would never beleive this is the same bag and I was quite rough on it cleaning it!!

I have waited for my suede to dry before brushing. I'm interested in what others have done. If you have a soft nail brush, it works pretty much the same as a suede brush

If you can be in love with a bag (yes)...I am in love with this little guy! Want all that excited about it at first. It's just gotten its first coat of Lexol and the inside is still drying. It's shaped up so beautifully and I think that it's one of my favorite bags (saying a lot since hubby just got me a Lindsey for Valentines Day that I've wanted forever)! Any suggestions? Continue Lexol then blackrocks? I don't think it's dry enough for oil.

At long last, she’s finished! This one was a real challenge to bathe as at 17” long, she just didn’t fit in my kitchen sink. But by rotating and flip-flopping a lot, she got a nice sudsy Dawn bath and toothbrush scrub. Considering she’s from 1994, there were no major issues...thankfully. Stuffed her, conditioned with Leather CPR, cleaned the brass with Brasso and polished and finished her off with Blackrocks. Oh yeah, and nice, new black edges on strap, hangtag and zipper edges with acrylic applied with a sponge-tip makeup applicator. I’m gonna love using this briefcase!

BTW: Has anyone noticed the change in Blackrocks packaging? Gone is the Indian Chief, replaced with a nice looking young man in a leather jacket. More importantly, has anyone noticed a difference in the product itself? The first one I bought when I joined this crazy (:)) group (about a year ago...happy anniversary to me) was much stickier...more wax-like. The new one is much creamier and much easier to apply. Seems to sink in more quickly too. I like it much better...just sayin’

After her return to glory:

Wow. .. Just wow! Lucky you!

unfortunately, I own 2 dooneys that have lost their color on the coated canvas in these "weird" patches, like somebody splashed bleach on it. I keep meaning to post mine, hoping somebody else had good ideas. I know somebody else washed a bag, but I think it's hard to wash these since they aren't leather. As far as the discolored leather, just clean so you know they are clean even if the discolorations stay. I think hand oils don't ever go away. It's almost as if they trim their bags in vachetta leather which is meant to discolor and patina. sorry I am not much help. For $20 it sounds like you get to be the one who teaches us your newly learned lessons. ?

*still havent started my rehab on the Dooney set*** doing research still.. but finding on other sites this coated canvas discoloration is a CLEAR manufacturer defect, im going to try my luck with dooney directly see what they recommend or offer!! keep you posted!!

when you talk to them would you also ask about yellow discoloration of the coated canvas, thanks!

Before I found this forum, I researched equestrian sites/forums and discovered Bick 4. I also have Leather Honey and use it occasionally. It is sticky and tacky just like honey. I use cosmetic sponges to apply and let the leather rest overnight. Like Blackrocks, you need to put it on real thin.

For this reason, I don't use it very often. Leather Honey can be used on Nubuc though! I used successfully on a nubuc Chelsea satchel.

Beautiful bag! Do you have Leather CPR? If not, then the Lexol, finished off with Blackrocks would be good. My understanding is that Leather CPR is one step up on the moisturizing scale from Lexol. It is so easy to us and cheap too :smile1:

this first one is last night right after the three times through the washer machine:

the last three I just took - it is about 3/4 dry - all os the black stains are gone and the pen marks are gone or very light....as you can see, the bag is lightening up as it dries but the color is still pretty - not sure the camera does it justice...

It feels dry and rough to my fingers which is what it should feel like, I assume. 'm hoping that after I brush it when it is dry, it will feel softer? All in all, I am quite pleased because that was one DIRTY bag!!! and the hardware and strap look great - no harm even though I put them through the spin cycle three time!!!
