Wow this thread is AMAZING and some of you ladies are GENIUS!!! I only wish I hd been here when this thread started so i could learn every trick of the "trade" I have been a rehabber for quite some time and just didnt know ya'll had coined a term, DH calls me a purse picker, its my hobby and has afforded me quite the collection. Im going to make this thread my new night time reading collection! Briefly im hoping, I can ask you lovely ladies to explain the dunk and washer machine rules along with how to properly hang/stuff dry with out damaging the bag! I picked up a NASTY bag with stain galore that lead me to this thread, no major investment just a challenge! Any and all quicky bullets for a newby would be MUCH appreciated! ill follow daily now and try my hardest to back read all gazillion pages =)

I've managed to turn a fairly presentable dry little bag into a greasy hot mess so I'm certainly not giving any advice! I have learned one handy trick though. .. If your brass has that weird clear coating on it. .. pure acetone takes it off then Brasso shines it evenly!

when I get a chance I'll do a side by side shot of the Musette vs the Carrier. I love the Musette's slightly smaller size but I have to say the Carriers back added slip pocket is so much more useful!!
couldnt help but chime in. i got my first carrier in the early 82s and when it was no longer usable [although i'm stunned by how you rehabbed that muse; i think i saw it for sale and figured it's useful life was over], started trolling ebay at the suggestion of a friend. i now seem to have collected 5 musettes and 4 carriers. it's gotten just a little out of hand, but i do love these particular bags! in my experience the carrier is better for campus (my life), carries, books, laptop, coffee thermos in back pocket, etc; musette is better for grab & go, just a laptop or ipad, almost like a glorified "purse". the 'muse' is about 2 inches shorter, and 1.5 inches shorter in length, which makes a difference. i know i need to sell off this collection, but then on the other hand, i'm thinking there are worse vices than stockpiling these two styles!!!

So I was browsing etsy... and this one came up. Less than $40...

I am so excited! It will need a bath but with what? Ivory? Woolite? Saddle Soap?

Beautiful bag! I don't use saddle soap on bags, especially not on a delicate red colored bag! I use Ivory, Woolite, or Dawn. Here are my typical steps for rehabbing a glove-tanned unlined vintage coach bag:

I am going to go on a search for all the supplies before the bags arrive.

I know, I said, I wasn't going to get another until all my 'other bags' arrive but who can resist an under $40 Bonnie bag.

I would love to buy another musette, and another carrier in the lighter color so if you have some needing refurbishing and/or looking to sell PM me sometime!

I wish I had taken a before picture, but I washed my Coach. It came out great! I still need to add leather conditioner, but overall...pretty nice.

Nice bag! Conditioner and black rocks would make that bag outstanding!

It looks like you have some edging loss on the strap so you want to touch it up with acrylic paint.

What's the best way to soften up leather?
I just got a slim duffle #9188 for $40 but its super stiff and not buttery at all. Any suggestions? It also has a strong smoke smell. I smoke, but like only 3 cigs a day. This smells like it came from the Marlboro company. it's really strong.

Thank you in advance!

read up to page 28 last night, just LOVE this thread! Learned soooo much! I have to admit as a coach newby i have passed 100's of vintage coaches up thinking they were fakes because of the old creed numbers and the way the were stamped into the leather rather than a swen patch! =( which always confused me because why would some one make a fake coach out of such supple beautiful leather.... DUMMY!! Any whoo after reading last night i promptly started my first rehab.... and i need help im not sure if you gals can help with! I bought this bag for $2 its a newer style love the weight and all the pockets and reversable strap which is why i figured i take me chance to see if it was cleanable! Thanks to you gals the leather is GOREGOUS and mark free again!!!! However the cloth portion which i thought would be the EASY part refuses to come clean! IVE TRIED EVERYTHING I CAN THINK OF, Tide, dawn, , alcohol, peroxide, 409, color safe bleach pen, scrubbed with a tooth brush, i even threw the thing in the washermachine! its BETTER, WAY BETTER than it was but any suggestions would be much appreciated!! TIA... ok well i tried to upload pics and could not, upload failed message over and over- any ideas why on that too?
