I think that in Louis Vuitton's classic bags with coated monogrammed canvas and light leather handles, the leather is vachetta. If you go over to the LV forum, you'll see people fretting over the darkening of the leather. I read somewhere that it darkens with actual handling, but also with exposure to the air. Someone did a tutorial of how to lighten the leather back up, using Magic Erasers.

I only learned about this company in the last week when I picked up a LV handbag at Savers for $14. The bag originally sold for nearly $1000, and it wasn't zip tied to the board like a Coach bag that I wanted to buy, but was hanging with the junky stuff. The Coach bag, a vintage drawstring bucket was priced twice as high. It was in pretty good condition except for a huge dark ink mark on the front :(.

I saw an LV at Savers for $50 but I don't know enough about the brand to know if it was authentic and I wasn't willing to risk $50. There was a good chance, though. It had suede lining.

That bag is just gorgeous.....

If thats any help, on the lightweight drawstring I just rehabbed, there is an ink spot of about 1cm, round. when I dunk the whole bag under hot water and Dawn, it did bleed but it didnt make the dot smaller. I think it may be permanently stained... I could try a trick I read about, rubbing alcolhol on the ink stain, if it works, ill let you know!

Thats what my worry has been. I can live with that spot as is. I DO NOT want it to get bigger. But to dunk it just enough, even with no soap, just to reshape and hydrate and to fix the curling up strap, would make this bag so amazing if I could avoid causing the ink to bleed out. I've done alcohol, etc and all that does is remove the actual brown dye. and it can also cause ink to bleed worse. If the bag doesn't bleed out, I am going to just touch up/disguise the ink dot with matching acrylic paint. I've learned that camouflaging is sometimes better than removing.

I don't know much about it either. I'm not into monograms/ signatures, but this bag was really cute. It looks like a little bowling bag. Plus it was only $14. I'm really a fan of vintage Coach.

Can anyone suggest anything one could do with this? It is a vintage Cashin bag.

Is there a glue that is safe to use that won't bleed through or damage the bag?

The bag is white.

Thanks.

Here is my latest dilemma...
I found this one, you can tell it used to be a nice bag however it is all banged up and misshaped now. It has 3 different materials, the straw, the white leather and the white suede. I think the suede used to be white or ivory.
I have very little experience with suede, it seems so tricky to me, once its sirty its forever or so it seems.
I have a spray that supposedly cleans suede and tested it and it really didnt make a difference.
The white leather opening is kinda scraped/damaged. Interior lining is fine but theres a row of suede there thats definatly seen better days.
Now, does anyone have any experience rehabbing this kind of bag? I feel its beyond my competence and I prefer leather, I was gonna leave this one up for parts.
Some of the hardware is really nice and amazingly in good shape compared to the rest of the bags. The handles are great too.

What would you guys do?
I dont think the straw thing can be messed with a whole lot....
Looking for toughts and suggestions...

Katev has rehabbed a straw bag so she might be able to help. The smooth leather can probably be fixed with leather refinisher or acrylic paint. I haven't had much luck with suede cleaners either. The only thing I know you can do with suede is sand it with sandpaper or steel wool.

FWIW-and since katev has already dunked a straw bag or two, if you decide to do that, I'd take a toothbrush and some mild soap to the suede and rinse well. That is my only contribution, as I have not worked with a straw bag.

Suede can be easier to clean than smooth leather, because you don't have to worry about scratching it. Really, all you have to worry about is not to remove too much of the "white".

I would probably try something as simple as Elmer's or a little bit of some sort of white, craft glue. It depends on how much stress that area of the bag is under. A little dab will do ya-you want it to stay flexible and not soak through either side of the leather.
