Here is my latest dilemma...
I found this one, you can tell it used to be a nice bag however it is all banged up and misshaped now. It has 3 different materials, the straw, the white leather and the white suede. I think the suede used to be white or ivory.
I have very little experience with suede, it seems so tricky to me, once its sirty its forever or so it seems.
I have a spray that supposedly cleans suede and tested it and it really didnt make a difference.
The white leather opening is kinda scraped/damaged. Interior lining is fine but theres a row of suede there thats definatly seen better days.
Now, does anyone have any experience rehabbing this kind of bag? I feel its beyond my competence and I prefer leather, I was gonna leave this one up for parts.
Some of the hardware is really nice and amazingly in good shape compared to the rest of the bags. The handles are great too.

What would you guys do?
I dont think the straw thing can be messed with a whole lot....
Looking for toughts and suggestions...

Cute bag!! yeah Katev did a nice rehab of a straw bag. You'd have to dig back through the rehab thread or maybe it will come up with a search. If I find it I'll post a link.

Just received purchase through the bay, and the purse looks great, until I looked under the pocket flap.

Does this look like black mold? I can't get anything to scrape off, and it doesn't smell. Nothing is "raised". I can't figure out what it is.

Several of the backside (suede) parts of this bag are not dyed, including this flap. So the white part is the actual color.

This is the bag. I don't know the name of the style.

That looks like the bag has been dyed from a lighter color (brown, british tan or camel?) to black.

JMHO.

The suede sides of the side pockets are black; the inside of the bag itself is black. You might be right, but I own and have owned a lot of black vintage coach bags and it looks like a factory original. It also looks a little light blue, which is the "blue leather" during the process of tanning leather, before it's drum dyed.

Thanks for your replies. I really want to keep it.

This pic shows the bluish tint (some purple, too.)

I have seen this on the back of some pockets. My Legacy zip is like that. It is a British tan bag and the back of the pocket is whitish with BT speckles. I suspect that Coach wanted this part of the bag to have thinner leather to reduce bulk - maybe it got split after dyeing?

By the way, if you ever do encounter black mold, you don't want to try to clean it. That stuff will make you sick. We got black mold in our house where there was a leak and we had to replace the cabinets.

Split after dying...that would make sense.

What is "BT" ?

Ugh. Sorry you had to replace cabinets. Dang they're expensive, too. :hrmm:

BT is British Tan.

It was just one bathroom cabinet. We found a cabinetmaker who was cheaper than Home Depot and I stained them myself. At least, now we have a new cabinet. But before we did that, we called in a mold expert and they wanted $3000 for the job because they would have taken extreme steps to ensure the mold was completely eradicated.

Sounds like you are smart with your money! And why am I not surprised that a rehabber would stain their own cabinet!

Hi all, I have been pretty much AWOL for a bit. First I was on vacation and now I am getting ready for loads of relatives to come to my house on Thanksgiving. I have given up trying to keep up with all the rehabs - but I miss rehabbing and hope to be back at it again soon!

Same here! I've had lots going on with my house, requiring contractors trudging around, but am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel (the joys of buying a 25 year old house). I also hope to be back to my rehabbing and vintage bag hunting soon!!

I have this bag and I did the following.

For the suede use a suede eraser and brush, wipe the straw with a soft cloth misted with wood cleaner, and use conditioner on the leather.

To restore the white on the tanned leather your best bet is acrylic paint blended to match.

I used painters tape on the non straw bits and then sprayed the straw with an acrylic sealer, but that was because the straw was flaking in places.

Thanks everyone for the tips and tricks!! I think there may be hope for it! :)
When I showed it to my husband, he said, I dont know babe, Im not sure theres hope for that one! lol
He follows my rehabs and likes the before and afters.... Hes been so supportive :) Maybe I could show him I think he might have been wrong about that one! Ill definatly try all the suede tricks and acrylic paint touch ups
My main concern is the shape of the bag, it looks like its been under a heavy pile of something for a long time but I might be able to reshape it.
Will definatly post pictures once I get well on way with this.

I cant say thanks enough to everyone thats helped me, we truely can make miracles! (with a bit of help from my friends...) :)
