Hello Ladies! Here's a Thank You to all who helped me with a damaged newer Coach purse. I've finally got the pictures uploaded to my computer. The first on is a 'before' picture and the other is the 'after' photo. The light has to hit it just right to be able to see the faded out spot I 'fixed', of course the scratches are still there. It looks okay, but I'm the anal type, I know it's there and it bothers the heck out of me. Hopefully, I'll find a replacement before long.

It looks much better. What did you end up doing to fix it?

So I got my Duffle Sac in today. Compared to what you ladies find your bags for, I did pay a pretty penny for it, but I love it. I am amazed at how soft and smooshy this leather is compared to my Helen's Legacy!! My Helen's Legacy leather is alot stiffer and honestly it doesn't have that nice slouch that the Duffle Sac I got has... Amazing. The Helen's Legacy is only a year older, but is is quite a difference. Strange.
Anyway, I just popped the Sac into the washing machine... It had a strange smell, not mold, but something... and I noticed a few stains inside so wash time!

I tried so many things that didn't work, I'd clean it up/off and start over. Finally I figured I couldn't make it look any worse and went no holds barred. I used black leather shoe dye, it bled. I cleaned it off, let it dry and put on a layer of dye. Let that dry overnight then did a second coat. That mainly did the trick, but I knew the dye would run again because (I finally learned)it was not the type of dye that adheres without help. So, after it dried, I used a blow dryer on the spot to set the dye....( I know heat + leather is a no-no, but that was my final idea and nothing else worked)......I let it sit over night and used apple conditioner on it....and there you have it!

Hi, everybody! Over the last couple of weeks I've become addicted to this thread, all the used, worn bags turning beautiful again like cinderella! :amuse: Seeing all of you have such success gave me some courage to try it out for myself.

I wanted something big and indestructible that I could take to the park with my kids that I wouldn't have to worry about. I found this classic duffel from 1998 on ebay and got it for $65, which I thought was kind of a lot. The listing pictures were with a flash and made the leather look much worse than it actually was, so when the bag arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the bag's condition.

I soaked the bag two times with all free & clear detergent. I used a glass mixing bowl filled with water to keep the bag submerged. My kids thought I was nuts for putting a bag in the sink!! I just told them it was mom's "experiment". I had also turned the bag inside out prior to the soak because I had read here of people brushing the interior of bags to get them really clean. This bag had a well-cared for previous life so it wasn't bad at all. I used a clean plastic-bristled dish brush to clean the inside. I didn't include any bag interior pictures because the bag is HUGE and really dark inside, but it turned out great! The leather before was good, but flat. The bag wouldn't stand up and was really floppy. Just like you guys said, the leather "fluffed" up and the bag stands up great now! These shots, except the one at the park, are of the bag completely empty!

And here's my duffel on its first outing. It's such a sturdy bag, I don't worry about setting it on the sidewalk. I love it!

Excellent job. It looks great!

Thanks, everyone's tips really helped. I would never have attempted this before, but seeing all these vintage bags here got into my brain and I had to have one!!

Believe me...we KNOW how you feel!
The best part is giving them away to people you know will appreciate them.
I just gave one away yesterday. Soooo much fun. :happydance:

And here she is after! The coffee stain is gone. The lining was already very clean, so I didn't do anything to it. There wasn't any bleeding of the dye from the leather onto the lining, although I do think the yellow lining became more golden and less bright yellow than before. I soaked her in some Dawn and warm water, rinsed, and rubbed Leather Therapy into her when she as drying. I was uneven in the application at first, and got panicky that I'd made her look worse than before. I did a few more applications of Lexol conditioner, and she evened out. In the sunshine, her color is more uniform; inside, I still notice some areas that are a little uneven, but I'm calling it done.

I hadn't realized how faded she was until I cleaned and conditioned her. The leather under the front pocket was darker than the rest of the bag, but now they are a pretty close match.
