AggieK said:Where do you live? I think you need to have stores carrying them locally, for the last 20 or 30 years. For us, that's Macy's.
Now, when you travel, you know you need to make time to visit thrift stores.
I live in Arkansas. We do have a local Dillard's but they don't carry many Coach bags. They said most of the women they sell to prefer DB so that's what they carry. :-/
We recently went to TX where I got to check our some thrift stores. I missed the big Goodwill I wanted to go to because we couldn't find it!Dh did take me to some other places and I got a Legacy small hobo, a DB rainbow bag and a fossil satchel for $10 for all three. I was only interested in the Coach but thought I'd try to rehab the other two and give them away. That got my dh hooked when he saw the difference between the great thrift store deals compared to the cost plus shipping of the eBay purchases!
Next trip to TX will include a detailed directions to every thrift store I can find and especially to that big fancy Goodwill in the Plano area.
AggieK said:Well, what I meant was, the stores had to have carried the bags 20 or 30 years ago, rather than carry them now. Then women cleaning out their closets will donate them to the thrift stores. As far as I'm concerned, it's better if people don't like these vintage bags. I'm more likely to find them.
It was when we lived in Houston in the 80's that I started buying Coach bags. Back then the basic bag was about $50. I haven't been back in years, but I'll bet the thrift stores there are pretty good.
I do remember my sister-in-law loving Dooney bags. I don't know if there is still the craze for them or not. Also I've heard Brighton is big there.
My eBay purchased navy City bag. Finally finished the rehab on her and a couple others. She didn't have a hang tag so I still need to find one for her!

I finished rehabbing my citron kisslock mystery bag and I have posted pics at the link below along with an appeal to TPFers to help me identify this bag.

It was in great shape, just a little dirty and misshapen as you can see in this pic. It had a slight musty smell but not bad, I am sure that this bag was taken care of over the years. I decided to dunk her to reshape and remove the smell and that worked fine. They just a couple of applications of leather cpr - I didn't even have to polish the hardware!
The AT before pics are at the link below:

I love easy rehabs!
I'm not certain how long Dillard's has been here but we've lived here 18 years and it was here when we got here. I don't know why I find no older Coach bags donated or for sale in this area. I do know I was quite surprised when we moved here, people were asking high for their "experienced" items. It seemed that the used items somehow became more valuable with said "experience!" Perhaps the elusive Coach bags haven't gotten enough "experience" to be worth selling OR donating??? LOL!
Actually I think it's because I live in a very rural area and many here don't own more expensive bags. :-/
I can't believe I did this. I bought a basic bag on ebay, checked it over, and rehabbed it. Today, I read the creed more closely. It says "this is a Coach bean bag"! I can't believe I didn't see it before. It just shows that even when we think we know what we are doing, some of the fakes can be very convincing.
Your "new" Coach looks wonderful!
Another great job. Great result! Such a beautiful, rich color.
I think your last sentence says it all. You need to go to a thrift store in a fancy neighborhood. One of the best ones I ever went to was in downtown Palo Alto, California.
Aww that stinks! I am afraid I will do that one of these times too, not that I know that much but sometimes I take a chance and bid when there isn't time to have the bag authenticated.
Ouch! I've always thought Basic Bags would be great to keep in my luggage to help keep things organized. I have two and will probably end up doing something like this with one of them.
Sigh. . at least it was a "cheap error!" I don't know about you but if I make a mistake, I just hope it won't be a $50 one! Everyone makes mistake so don't take to heart. That would have been a steal of a deal that would make most of us "grab it before someone else does!"![]()
Great news! The seller refunded my money, said I can keep the fake bag, AND is sending me a real one. Apparently she meant to sell her old bag but sold me a bag that was her mother's. So all's well that ends well!I am so sorry and after you spent time and effort rehabbing. That is the real kicker. But, as you said the fakes can be so convincing. Counterfeiters. Ugh!!!!
I don't have any good thrift stores near me either. That's the problem for me. I haven't found any "fancy neighborhoods" within a days drive. But the good news is I can visit family in Plano and hit all those fancy neighborhoods!

I don't mind the time and effort I spent rehabbing. It was good experience. Surprisingly, I haven't done many black bags and even though they are supposed to be easier, for me, it is hard to get them looking as new as the other colors. The scratches seem to keep showing. I don't know what I am going to do with this bag now that I have it looking nice but I will find something.
