Savers (also called Value Village) often has sales and coupons and that can really help. I recently bought a black Patricia's Legacy there for $20. It had been marked $40 but I had a 50% off coupon.

My local Savers gives a 25% off discount to everyone on Mondays, and on Tuesdays anybody that is 55 or older receives a 25% off discount. They periodically run other discount promotions as well. Like they will stamp a card for every $5 purchase and when you fill the card you get 30% off. Apply for a Savers Card - no fee, just a membership card to receive information and special offers.

If you donate any number of items to Savers they will give you 2 coupons good for future purchases. One coupon is for $3 off on a purchase of at least $10 and the other coupon is for a percentage off on your entire order. The percentage varies, sometimes they give 25% or 30% or 20%. If I see some decent items around the house that I want to get rid of, I often put them in a bag and leave them in the trunk of my car so that I will qualify for a donation reward the next time I am at Savers.

I've only bought one bag off of Craigslist but it was a bargain and I have gotten lucky at several garage sales this summer.

The Salvation Army store offers 50% off on the "color" of the week and occasionally I have had the luck to find a great bag with the right color tag for that week. For example, I had previously passed on a black Rambler's Legacy at the SA that was marked $35 but later I saw that it was still there and got it for only $17.50.

If you join the Goodwill Club, they will occassionally email specials and will send you a discount coupon for your birthday month.

The bargains are getting harder to find but there are some options available!

Wow! Thanks for the information katev. I'm going to copy this so I can keep the info on hand. I also have some items I will donate. We only have Good Will and Salvation Army locally but we're planning a trip to TX this week so I'm hoping to find a few good bargains in some of their resale stores! There's a huge Good Will near where our son lives so I have my fingers crossed! :-)

This is my MFF Zoe. She needed cleaning, but since she's that pearly-looking leather I was afraid to dunk her, so I just surface cleaned her and used Lexol conditioner on her. Her edges had suffered color loss, and she has a gouge caused by an evil ashtray in a rental car. I used the tips I saw on this thread....here are the results. I used acrylic paint to touch up the spots where she lost color. I'm not sure it's a perfect match, but it seems to look much better. The color was hard to achieve!!

Way to go!!!

That's a good idea. The only problem I have with the older classics, there is no cellphone pocket! LOl!

I have this problem too but the stewardess has plenty of pockets. It keeps me more organized than some of my newer purses.

To answer your other question, I carry mostly newer purses even though my vintage collection is huge. Most of my vintage pieces are too small to be used every day since I don't like to go anywhere without my huge wallet. I try to carry the vintage pieces when I am going out to dinner or to the movies.

A couple of my vintage pieces are in new condition and I feel like I might damage them if I use them. I actually bought a used version of the burgundy basic bag so I could carry that one instead. In some ways, I think the used one is prettier.

Great job! I know what you mean about getting a perfect match on the color. I kept trying on my blue bag and finally I decided it was close enough. Then I realized that the bag had faded and the color I had mixed matched perfectly the inside parts which hadn't faded.

Oh dear! I will have to find that faded red collegiate bag, I'm sure it is at the bottom of my "rehab rejects" pile which is underneath my current "to be rehabed" pile!

I often think that I could buy some brand new bags with the money I've spent on vintage bags and rehab products, not to mention the time savings! But it's my hobby and I enjoy it!

I may beat you to it. I have two red bags I need to do something with and I may end up doing this. One is my spectator city bag which I have already experimented on with acrylic paint (but haven't quite finished) and the other is my little double kisslock bag that needs work. I need to post pix of the old kisslock bag. It handled a dunking with flying colors but I think there is something about how the leather aged in spots that has made it turn darker. It could just be burnished...not sure. It might also have been really dried out, which somehow turned it dark. That would be my guess, because of the way its dried out, but who knows. It essentially came out of the bath looking the same as it went in though, and I don't think it's carryable, it just kind of looks dirty.

I tried sanding it and then using BlackRocks and it seems to have helped but I haven't gotten back to it to finish experimenting.

Dunno what to tell you... I don't wanna be responsible for having you do anything to a favorite! Maybe practice on one you aren't as in love with so you can see how it works/feels?

haha-that's OK, I would never blame someone else if I goof up...just double checking before I spend money I shouldn't on something that won't work for me.

I've been working on my carrier bag, and when I went to condition it after washing in my machine the top flap became alot more darkened than other panels on the bag. Maybe the leather they used for these types of bags is a bit more prone to 'grabbing' oily marks? It's soaking in the wash again as I type...

Is it the whole top flap? It could just be a difference in the piece of leather used. My Musette looks like it had oil splashed on it, but there is a larger circle on the bottom like it had some kind of oil splashed on it or something was spilled in it. I think I'll eventually try m3rm's british tan stuff...I just love the color and smooshiness of it as is so I'm afraid to mess with it. It IS noticeable, but working at a university I can kind of get away with a weathered bag, it's sort of part of the culture, you know?

I've seen some of the bags you've shared here whateve. They are gorgeous! You have a wonderful collection. I can sure understand you wanting to keep them safe. (I've seen at "least" one of your beautiful bags I'd almost trade an arm for!) :-p

So I guess I'm going to look for a stewardess bag then! I didn't realize they had extra pockets. Love that feature! I have seen a few on eBay but the prices were a lot higher than I hoped for so I passed them by in favor of the city bags. :-/

Thank You katev! As always you have a wealth of information on this!!!

My pleasure, I'm just a dedicated bargain hunter! :graucho:

Here's how you multi-quote:

You start with the first message that you want to select. Don't click on the "Quote" button, click on the button next to it that looks like 2 sheets of paper with a little green dot. After you click, the little green dot will turn red.

Repeat the process with the next messages until you reach the last message in the group. Click the "Quote" button on that message and all of the posts will appear in the message box.

The just reply in the normal manner and click "Submit Reply"

It's easy!
