I have a question about suede...but it's a beautiful jacket, not a Coach bag. It's in almost perfect condition, a beautiful salmon color. Here's the rub...there are two small, 50 cent piece size, dirty spots that are stiff. I have no idea what spilled on it or caused this.

There's no place locally to have it professionally cleaned...it would have to be sent out of town and I fear, cost prohibitive. I've done a couple of things to see if I can improve the spots...a light emory board, a gum eraser...nada nada. The spots are still dark and stiff.

I only paid $25 for it at an estate sale. It's a old name brand, exquisitely tailored and I'd love to wear it this winter. Frankly, I didn't see the spots until I got it home. Usual story, huh? One spot is along the bottom hem front and the other near bottom hem on the back.

Has anyone ever washed suede? The jacket is lined, has covered buttons and is really, really nice. So, tell me what you think...please. I can post pics if it will help.

I think I'm ready to call my Lula's Legacy complete. Here's what she looked like when I picked her up for $14.50:

And here she is now:

She was already in good shape, just a little faded with some piping scuffs. Now she did smell like aftershave, but after some time with some odor absorbing gel, she smells more fresh - the scent still lingers a bit but not in an overpowering way.

Process was basically bath in Woolite, an application of Leather Therapy Restorer while still damp, two applications of Leather CPR, one application of Cadillac Boot & Shoe Care, and, finally, an application of Leather Therapy Leather Finish to give her some protection from the elements.

I think Ms. Lula may just accompany me on my business trip to Orlando. I leave tomorrow and come back on Friday. She's really keen on meeting Mickey. :P

Beautiful job...she'll LOOOOVE Mickey!

I think she looks fabulous, I would probably leave her alone for fear of making things worse instead of better, she gorgeous.

I will try and hunt up Hyacinth's post on colors. Nice work!
Thanks! Yeah, I think I'll leave the corners alone.

She looks great...woo hoo! :)
Thanks!

I saved this link when I first joined here...I just wasn't sure if the colors were the same in 2000. I'm still thinking Tabac. Thanks for posting this again...I'm sure it will be handy for our newer members!

I'm looking for advice. I recently purchased an adorable periwinkle casey bag (for $2.50!) but the exposed parts of the bag were a dirty gray color while the inside and under flap areas were a brilliant blue color.

First I hand-washed the bag and it got a little brighter and more blue but not enough to count, but it gave me hope. So I rubbed oxyclean gel into the gray areas, let it set, and then put it through the washer.

It is now dry and it is a little more bright and blue (pics attached) but I don't know if it is faded or dirty, although I fear that it is permanently faded. I am trying to make a decision as to my next steps, should I:

1) Keep washing it to see if it gets better
2) Try conditioners and blackrocks to see if the color improves
3) Dye the bag to restore the blue color
4) Other ideas/options?

What would you do if it was your bag? Thanks for your advice!

The before AT pics are at the link below and I have attached pics that were taken after 2 washings.

This is a tough one...I'm just not sure that a dye job would work, I don't know that you can brighten it with dye. As the color is now fairly uneven (like under the flap), I would would be afraid the dye will be uneven too. I hope someone can give you a better answer!

I have a bag that is this color, for some reason I thought it was the "Honey" color that is shown on that page in the lightweights collection.

I have a bag that is "saddle" and it is pretty yellowish.

Honey is a closer match, but my bag is not from Lightweights line...and much younger. Hmmm, the mystery continues...

Ok, your sewing skills are impressive. Can you give me some tips? Special needles you use, special thread, which stitch? I have a purse that could use some stitching. Your purse looks great!

I was thinking the same thing!

Thanks...I'm working on a little illustrated tutorial...I hope to post it this afternoon. Pretty easy stuff, just want to explain it as clearly as possible.

Love the bag. So cute. Since I need to carry 40lbs with me I couldn't use such a cutie. If it were mine I would wash it multiple times. Since I recently recolored a Kristin with the leather refinisher I would try that straight, no conditioner mixed in. I used the Kristin all of July and had no fading or color transfer. Feel like I should do a commercial for the stuff. :p
I have a Casey bag, too. Am not sure that it was made in periwinlke. Mine is navy blue - perhaps you should check wtih Hyacinth to see if it was made in periwinle. As a long time coach owner - they did do those colors every so often, but am not sure they did them in that bag - it would be interesting to find out.

Good morning! My convertible clutch is now dry and well conditioned (several times with Apple Leather Care.) The leather is very soft and buttery. But do I still need to use something like Black Rocks on her or should I just spray her down with Rain Garde? Thanks for your help and advice!

I know I broke the "rules" since my question was about a jacket, not a purse. Sorry...was just hoping for a little advice. :shucks:

That' s not a problem! I haven' t worked with suede, but several girls here have. I know they threw the bags in the washer, but they were unlined. A lined jacket is a whole other ball game. Someone will be able to give you some hints.

I have a Coach suede jacket. As of yet I have not washed it. I have thrown it in the drier with wet Bounce sheets to get rid of the musty smell it had. Came out soft and fluffy. I got something on the sleeve I haven't been able to get out. My cobbler recently sold me some suede cleaner. It suds up like soap and the you wipe off with moist rag and then brush with suede brush. Haven't tried it yet. Too hot to think about jacket right now. Maybe a shoe repair place can recommend something. My dry cleaner will do for $80-$120 depending on work required.

Does anyone know how to clean dirty handles? I have a gray Sabrina I got used and have tried cleaning them with soap & water, Mr Clean magic eraser, tape... still I see the soil on the handles and its driving me crazy! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Now that I think about it, I think I would try Rit dye rather than leather dye. I figure you just want to refresh the color so that would be easier. Since you immerse the bag, it would be easier to get it even. It would probably be easier to find the right color too. You could leave it in the dye solution longer for more color. I did this with a lined pebbled bag and it came out fine. I was looking for a lime green so I just mixed green and yellow.
