I'm looking for advice. I recently purchased an adorable periwinkle casey bag (for $2.50!) but the exposed parts of the bag were a dirty gray color while the inside and under flap areas were a brilliant blue color.

First I hand-washed the bag and it got a little brighter and more blue but not enough to count, but it gave me hope. So I rubbed oxyclean gel into the gray areas, let it set, and then put it through the washer.

It is now dry and it is a little more bright and blue (pics attached) but I don't know if it is faded or dirty, although I fear that it is permanently faded. I am trying to make a decision as to my next steps, should I:

1) Keep washing it to see if it gets better
2) Try conditioners and blackrocks to see if the color improves
3) Dye the bag to restore the blue color
4) Other ideas/options?

What would you do if it was your bag? Thanks for your advice!

The before AT pics are at the link below and I have attached pics that were taken after 2 washings.

Love the bag. So cute. Since I need to carry 40lbs with me I couldn't use such a cutie. If it were mine I would wash it multiple times. Since I recently recolored a Kristin with the leather refinisher I would try that straight, no conditioner mixed in. I used the Kristin all of July and had no fading or color transfer. Feel like I should do a commercial for the stuff. :p

I know it's not vintage but I just got a embossed python off of craigslist. I cleaned out the inside with soap and water as it was a little dirty but I curious as to what to do with the outside. It feels a little dry and I was wondering if leather cpr would be safe to use on it or if it normal to be dryer than other basic leather bags. I have never had a bag with this type of leather before. Thanks in advance!

Beautiful bag! It is embossed leather so most conditioners would probably be fine, but you have to be a little careful with bags that have a textured surface. Sometimes the thick opaque creams build up in the crevices and dry.

For a textured bag I usually use a lighter conditioner like lexol or leather therapy or emu oil. If you do use leather cpr, apply it lightly and wipe off the excess immediately.

Thanks a bunch! I will try that.

Gave her a good soak and scrub with Dawn and a little Mean Green on some dark spots, rinsed well and stuffed her! Got out the needle and thread and fixed the piping. Two rounds of Leather CPR made her nice and supple. Two rounds of Blackrocks and a little buffing made the wear on the bottom corners just about disappear.

Should I continue with more Blackrocks on those trouble areas?
Can anyone identify the color...darker than British Tan...Tabac maybe?

Ok, your sewing skills are impressive. Can you give me some tips? Special needles you use, special thread, which stitch? I have a purse that could use some stitching. Your purse looks great!
