I Blackrock'd it, but the lines are still there.
So I ordered some British Tan Leather Refinisher stuff. When it gets here, we'll see if that does it.

Just an fyi, I've just rewashed my navy city bag in preparation for applying the leather color restorer stuff because a cobbler once told me that it is much better to dye a bag that hasn't been conditioned - because conditioners may contain wax (like Blackrocks) and that may prevent the dye from being absorbed by the leather.

I'm looking for advice. I recently purchased an adorable periwinkle casey bag (for $2.50!) but the exposed parts of the bag were a dirty gray color while the inside and under flap areas were a brilliant blue color.

First I hand-washed the bag and it got a little brighter and more blue but not enough to count, but it gave me hope. So I rubbed oxyclean gel into the gray areas, let it set, and then put it through the washer.

It is now dry and it is a little more bright and blue (pics attached) but I don't know if it is faded or dirty, although I fear that it is permanently faded. I am trying to make a decision as to my next steps, should I:

1) Keep washing it to see if it gets better
2) Try conditioners and blackrocks to see if the color improves
3) Dye the bag to restore the blue color
4) Other ideas/options?

What would you do if it was your bag? Thanks for your advice!

The before AT pics are at the link below and I have attached pics that were taken after 2 washings.

I love that blue bag!

It does look better, I've been waiting for the reveal on this one. I suspect it is faded, and washing won't make much difference. I would opt for conditioning and blackrocks to see if that evens & enriches the color. I think it looks pretty good as is and ithe fading is only noticeable if you open it up and compare under the flap.

Gave her a good soak and scrub with Dawn and a little Mean Green on some dark spots, rinsed well and stuffed her! Got out the needle and thread and fixed the piping. Two rounds of Leather CPR made her nice and supple. Two rounds of Blackrocks and a little buffing made the wear on the bottom corners just about disappear.

Should I continue with more Blackrocks on those trouble areas?
Can anyone identify the color...darker than British Tan...Tabac maybe?

I have a bag that is this color, for some reason I thought it was the "Honey" color that is shown on that page in the lightweights collection.

I have a bag that is "saddle" and it is pretty yellowish.

So I ordered some British Tan Leather Refinisher stuff. When it gets here, we'll see if that does it.

I can't wait to see how the BT refinisher works. I need to do something to even out my Musette, even though I've been carrying her as is, I'd like her to look a little fresher (I guess I haven't posted after pix yet...)

I agree with this, even a quick rinse in warm water to get the blackrocks off should work. I did this once and I could see the white coming off, I assume it was the wax from the Black Rocks.

On the other hand, I think if a bag is really dry, it can absorb the dye or color unevenly so it might be of value to condition it at least a little with something that probably does not have wax in it. Sometimes it's hard to tell, but we know Black Rocks has wax. If you feel the need to do this, make sure you give the bag lots of time to soak up the conditioner and err on the "under conditioned" side.

good idea, I hadn't thought about this!

Beautiful bags! I think that you will be able to remove or minimize the spots but perhaps not the ink marks. Below are some links with information about rehabbing vintage unlined bags. Please review and then let us know if you have any questions. Good luck!

I would use liquid dish soap, Dawn is what I use. Make sure you stuff with towels so they retain their shape when they dry. When partially dry, start conditioning. I use leather therapy, but many here use leather CPR. 2-3 coats, I allow a day between each coat. When leather is supple you want to start polishing. I use Blackrocks, work a section at a time and let it dry a day between coats. Then I use Obenauf's which is more wax like and waterproofs the bag. I'll be honest, these bags appear to be in good shape. You cold skip dunking the bag and start massaging oil in to make the leather supple. Then polishing. I only dunk if the inside is icky, or they need to be reshaped. Your 2 look good.

I don't think it matters for an "average" bag, but you know how a really dry bag will absorb conditioner unevenly, it will do the same thing with dye.

BTW, I think the emu oil is FABULOUS! I had a couple of older bags that I had conditioned, but still felt like they were still a bit in the danger zone as far as dryness, but it's made them nice and supple again.

I've been really impressed with emu oil too. No odor, easy to work with and a great conditioner.
