Ahhh. I use Fiebing's. Is there something special about this brand? The Fiebing's seems to work just fine so far.

I haven't used fieblings yet, it always sounded a bit complicated but maybe I'm wrong. I've never dyed a bag myself, I have used acrylic paint and had a bag dyed professionally but that's all - so I am going to try this stuff out on my $3 bag.

I guess being a newbie, ignorance was bliss in this instance since I had no idea Fiebing's might be difficult and have been using it for months now with no problems. The only thing I do is add water to it whenever I use it, on the idea that an older bag's color has faded so using full strength didn't seem to be a good idea. I use qtips to apply it and usually end up going back a few times to reapply until the color is right.

Great results so far. I'd recommend it.

Thanks, it is probably just me, I have always been a bit scared of trying to dye a bag myself.

I've mostly only used Fiebings to touch up piping, though I did mess around with dying my basic bag. I mix it with conditioner or use it while the bag is still damp. It's seems pretty easy to use to me. I've never tried to change the color of a bag though, that's different than "refreshing" the color.

I'm really interested in this Leather Refinisher stuff though. I have two Black bags that I know were treated with something that worked really well...black and shiny but not like shoe polish, does not come off when the bag is dunked either. I've wondered what was used on them that's cleaned them up so well. Quite honestly, the only reason that I'm sure something was used on them is that they are really too old to be in this great condition, and one of them has a little missed spot underneath the strap attachment that looks OK, but different from the rest of the bag.

I wouldn't mind experimenting on my Red Spectator City bag if I thought the red they sold matched up-they mention they match some of Coach's colors but I can't tell which red would be the correct color from looking at the color chart.

I was hoping for some feedback on this bag. I am working on a VERY abused Swagger bag today. Hyacinth took a look at it and said it looked ok. I dunked her today and when she came out I noticed her zipper pull looks pretty bad:

It appears to be flaking....is that something a Coach authentic pull does? I realize the pull could have been replaced, should I put her back up for Hyacinth to look at? Anyone seen this before on one of their bags? The leather on the pull is an exact match, but not sure if that makes any difference.

Yes, authentic bags can do that, some are brass plated and when the plating wears off they are just a plain base metal that can corrode, as the pull ring on your bag has done.

I had a similar situation with a beat-up bag that I rehabbed. It wasn't corroded but all the plating had worn away and after I shined up the hardware as much as possible I still hated the look of that dull, gray metal pull ring that didn't match the rest of the goldtone hardware on the bag.

I finally decided to remove and replace the ring, although this meant altering the bag from the original condition. I borrowed a wire cutter from my husband's tool bench and cut the ring off, then I threaded a similar sized, brass split ring onto the zipper pull and the pull tab.

I was lucky and had an old keyring around the house that had just the right size ring for my bag, but you can buy split rings pretty inexpensively at hardware or hobby stores or online.

At the link below are before and after pics of the bag so that you can see the change. Good luck!

I think I will hunt for split ring, thanks for the feedback. Your bag turned out beautiful!

Still got the lines/swirly things. Think I am gonna just back off and wait for the Blackrock, should be here tomorrow. I'm afraid if I keep scrubbing it, it's gonna end up lighter than the rest of the bag. I think it already is just a little... Lesson learned: From now on I'll use Oxi Gel with my hand, not those little nubby things on the applicator!!!!

P.S. is it ok if I rub some Apple conditioner on today before the Blackrock comes tomorrow? That flap is just sooooo drrrryyyy now.

I've been thinking about your bag. What happened with the swirls? Don't feel badly about it. I was rehabbing a Kristin and screwed it up. I colored some damaged spots with leather refinisher. I didn't stop to think that when I mixed pewter with turquoise it would make a sparkly blue smoke. Instead of cleaning off the spots I painted the whole bag. :( dumb move. It looked good but not original. So out came the acetone. Yes, gasp, acetone. That messed up the original color so it had to be recolored. Turquoise and black makes smoke blue. A month later the bag was done. Top it off with Brasso on the brass hardware. It turned nickel. :(.

Ok so here is a tip if anyone is thinking of trying Leather Refinisher coloring. I fall under the category of " if a little is good then a lot is better" ding dong. So I was working on my British tan Chadwick. I mixed the medium brown with my leather conditioner. I had the color just right but since there is a nickel size water stain on back I thought oh heck make it a little darker.

It was too dark and the color sat heavy in some spots more than others. My choices since color was not set yet, but it was dry, were wash again or rub alcohol on it to lift color. Then I thought since color is not set and I mixed with leather conditioner then more conditioner should pull color up. It did.

I rubbed conditioner in with my fingers and wiped with a wash cloth. Perfect color now. Phew! :)

Good advice, I rewashed the navy city bag to remove all the conditioner I put on it and it is still drying. As soon as I find time I will try it out.
