The buckles on this bag are VERY heavy an I think the leather got too dried out and then wore down in that area. I don't think I will ever get this bag back to pristine condition, but those stained areas are still noticeable after the bath.
My NYC era Rambler had these kinds of splits and water didn't hurt it. I didnt' try the washing machine but I imagine on delicate cycle it can't be much different than a long soak in a sink would be. along the seam edges like in your first photo I've taken a tiny amount of leather safe glue found at a fabric store, and have inserted a little bit in and let it dry into its proper shape just to add some extra protection to that delicate area.

I've tried using a leather cleaner on it and no change.

Had you washed the Taft previously?. (-tho these bags can handle repeated washings.) I do know that the Taft is a tough bag and can take a good warm soaking just fine. I'd think that would help remove the build up. You may even feel a "slick" almost slimy feeling coating while it's in the wash water. Just gently scrub it (I've used a really soft nail brush or old tooth brush to lightly rub down the surface while its wet). Then really rinse well.

Thank you for the suggestion about the leather safe glue, I think I will try that. I will look for some while I am out today.

This poor bag has had a rough life! I would still try the washer if it were my bag, but that's up to you. I would moisturize it soon after washing to try and prevent further were and damage. But perhaps another rehabber has a different suggestion. Good luck!

Thank you for the input. I think I am going to try using the oxi gel in the sink first and if that doesn't work I might brave the washer. I appreciate the help :smile1:

I've never washed it before, I bought it off etsy with a nail polish spill inside. I put it in the machine inside a pillowcase with towels on delicate/hand wash. When I take it out I stuff it with dry towels to keep its shape while it dries, right? I'm in the desert but our house has more moisture in the air with the swamp cooler running. If the gloss spray is washed off, how long to I let it dry before I can apply leather CPR? Thanks ladies! I've been wanting to do this for months but was too scared to ruin the bag.

I used a cloth and color does show to come off when I used the Leather CPR. Thanks.

I often get a little "color release" on the cloth when I condition or wash a vintage coach bag, but it doesn't usually harm the bag or change the color. But I try to be more cautious with bright colored bags like red.

Did you lose a lot of color, does the bag have a bare spot now?

No. No. Just noticeable on the cloth. Don't really see any noticeable difference on the bag.

I don't think the machine wash will be a problem at all, but in a sink full of water you have more "hands on" control of really gently but thoroughly rubbing at the outer survace with your hands and/or a soft brush or wash cloth if you are wanting to be certain of removing any outer coating. Again, the machine may do that just fine on its own. Most of my rehabs either have a very specific stain I work at by hand, or just over all dirtiness that a machine will be more efficient in grabbing and removing. So I think either method, and yes, even doing one then the other if the first doesn't work, will be fine.
Condition it the first time when it's mostly dry to the touch on the outside, and it may feel a tad bit damp when you really press it and damp on the inner pockets which don't have access to air. Others may have various opinions on this. Tafts are thick so it may be a little longer than other bags, but you're in a dryer climate it sounds like. It truly varies from bag to bag on how long the drying process is. But they will start accepting and aborbing conditioner once the outer coating of the smooth leather is starting to feel dry. Can't wait to see how she turns out!

This isn't a Coach but I don't think there is a Fendi rehab thread. I wasn't able to clean the outside. I was thinking of painting the stripes but I don't know what to do about fixing the lining.

Since my earlier post: http://forum.purseblog.com/coach/coach-rehab-and-rescue-club-624452-286.html#post22354042 I’ve been looking all over for newer Abbie's for comparison - and have come up with NOTHING!

Though not a remarkable rehab reveal, I just wanted everyone to see the differences in my two Abbie’s.

Both of these bags have had Dawn baths, good rinses, reshaping, conditioning with Leather CPR and finishing with Blackrocks. The brown one started out much like cardboard...really stiff and smooth looking. When I applied CPR, it just laid on the surface for a long time, but finally started absorbing. Then a nice familiar grain started to appear and the leather became much more supple, though much thinner than the orange one.

The orange one is from 1997, the brown one from 2003. The details of the bags, though, remain significantly different. The top of the brown bag itself is more rounded, the pocket is more curved, the D rings are more pointy (although I’ve seen this same hardware on my 88-89 Swinger Bag) and most notably the difference in the distance (and size) of the fold-over thingy on the strap (the last pics). Even the zipper pulls are slightly different!

Who knows...different ages, different plants...I just don’t know if the brown one is real or not...I’ll continue to look for comparisons! Give me a shout if anyone finds a 2003, please.

We are mostly into rehabbing bags. I did a search on this thread on sabrina and nothing came up; but maybe it was posted elsewhere on the coach forum. Could you post a picture of the color loss, perhaps we can offer some suggestions.

Yes. Here it is:
