I've been wondering about this - why do I see so many bags listed with pictures where the flaps are just hanging loosely and not closed with the turnlocks? What are these sellers thinking? There are too many like this to be an oversight. Please tell me why!!!

I love your Musette. I can hardly wait for the afters.

Weird huh? I was half expecting a broken turnlock but they're fine. And we all know broken turnlocks are the least of our worries. :D a badly listed bag is a bargain hunters dream!

I can't wait for the afters either! I just unstuffed and hung her up for a little while so she'll dry sooner. Funny she looks reddish now though she's clearly BT. I think all the hot water and soap opened the pores or something, she looks especially porous for some reason.

I'm about to put a coat of leather cpr on her. The flap and handle are mostly dry.

Speaking of British Tan and Black Rocks, y'all may have seen this bag in the ID thread. I didn't even wait for positive identification before I dumped this poor Musette in the kitchen sink:
I don't have "after" pix yet, she's not finished, I'm just sort of sharing because I have no one else who cares about my journey. :p
I think you can see what I believe to be oil spots pretty well in those pix and what you CAN'T see is that she was flat as a pancake!
I dumped her in a the sink with some pretty hot water, rubbed in some extra Dawn dish soap on the bigger oily areas, and just let her soak for a good long while. I thought it was interesting that even in "the tub" the sides unflattened themselves and she took her normal shape!
When I took her out to rinse, the spots were still very apparent, so I opted to put her in the washing machine. I actually put SHOUT! on the outside of the bag, secured her in a pillow case and threw in a bunch of towels and such to pad her journey, and washed her on hot, with a prewash cycle AND an extra rinse (no spin).
The cycle finished right before I went to bed, and I stuffed her with towels and put her on the back patio before I went to bed. I made sure to leave her where she would still be in the shade if I slept in a little.
However, when I pulled her out of the washer I noticed a little bit of suds still on her. I got up and put some conditioner on her, butthat was just bugging me! So I just gave her an extra good rinse in the sink again. Darn it-she was about half dry.
Anyway, I know I'm not going to get all those darn spots out! So I guess I'm going to have to depend on BlackRocks.
Sorry for the long post, with no end results (she's sitting out on the patio in the shade, enjoying the warmth...I just needed to vent a little.
This is such a cute bag!! I love the silhouette! Enjoy and I can't wait to see after pictures.

Hey everyone so I scored this little bag on Ebay for $30. It was authenticated by DemRam as a late 70s Swinger Bag. As you can see the previous owner CUT the handles and tied them together. Sad day  I think I'm going to take it to a leather smith and have them completely replaced.

My questions to the experts would be should I rehab it first before I replace the handles or after? I can't decide! Help!!

It probably doesn't matter much but I'd rehab first just in case it helps you find other issues the pro can help you with.

This reminds me I need to post the afters on my swinger. She looks ok but I'm not sure she's carryable.

What a shame, such a cute bag!

I have a court bag with a short strap that was chopped off in a very amateursh fashion and it makes me sad.

You might take it to the leather expert first for an opinion but I would probably wait until after rehabbing it to before getting the straps replaced. That way you could make sure that the color matches the final shade of the bag. But ask his opinion first.

I once enquired about having a new strap made for my beechnut gracie but the cobbler advised against it and said "I wouldn't be able to match the skins, you might spend a lot of money and not be happy with the results."

But that bag was caviar leather and kind of unusual, it should be easier to match glove-tanned black leather. Good luck!

Thank you for the tip!! I will probably take it in and see how much it will cost to replace the straps in the first place. If its too expensive I might just replace the darn things myself!!

If you mean the $350 red one - it was a fake. I didn't see any others? Can't believe I missed it, although my credit card will be pleased!

I love that bag-I'm glad "one of us" got her. Did you see the "newish with tags" vintage version that was listed around the same time? I cannot find the listing now, and I thought I'd saved it, but it looked really cool too.

Dry cleaners can barely use dry cleaning fluid here so I'd be surprised if we could actually buy it...maybe someone else knows? Anyone tried Dryel on a bag? I know it comes with a spot cleaner that's supposed to be effective, and heck, I've got a package of that stuff I've never tried...hmmm...
