OK, this comes with a total disclaimer, it might work, it might make it worse, but I would wrap carefully in a light pillow caseand wash it in a washing machine with towels or other such things to pad it.

In my experience, the type of fabric they use in this bag doesn't hold onto dye that well so washing it might get the dye out of the fabric. It could also make the dye spread further. But I would try that step before I dyed it. If you are going to dye it, it would probably help to have the bag really clean anyway so that the dye takes evenly.

Again, totally a guess. I think that's what I would do with that bag at this point though.

Thanks. I might end of doing that. As I looked at it today it dawned on me that if the Shout got that dye moving in the first place, maybe it was the answer here as well. I just finished a tedious spray, dab with white terrycloth rag, rinse rag, dab, etc. The rag eventually stopped picking up dye. I've hung it up to dry. I think it's going to look much better. I'll probably have to do it again. Funny how stuff comes to you when you put it away for awhile and come back to it.

And as a commentary, from what I've seen, the US Military ought to have Coach making the fighting people's clothes! It sure seems "bullet proof" to me!

Hello Dears,

I got a really cute bag that was sold as "black", once it arrived I noticed it was really born a mahogany leather bag.The black paint (only on the outside, inside leather is still brown) is thick and relatively stubborn. Only the edges and parts of the back have robbed off and showed hints of reddish tone (enough to to be noticed).

I washed it by hand and in the washing machine (smells like smoke), and the black is still the dominant color on the outside so I decided not to "reverse it to its birth skin". NOW, the challenge is painting up all the uneven reddish area and make it look AND FEEL nice again. I have been doing OK with the leather paint cream in black, but I am not liking how "thick and dry" the leather feels.

Is there any conditioning that I should do post color touch-up to soften up this thick leather and make it feel nice against my body? Do you recommend blackrock or leather CRP for post-paint moisturizing?

Thanks!

Hi ladies! I got myself an ergo mini hobo from the thrift store for 4.25 after tax, and it was kindly authenticated by Hyacinth (pics at http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-shopping/authenticate-this-coach-694619-257.html#post22136531)
It's orange (it's an orange pancake), but the handle has turned much darker due to handling. It will definitely require a dunking - it also has some white spatters (that come off easily) and sadly, some pen marks. Still, I think it will be a fun challenge.

A question - to minimize dye bleeding, is it better to use hot water or warm water? Or does it not matter?

Looks like fun!

I wouldn't use hot water, but in my opinion, the cold water won't dissolve the oils that are causing the darkening as well as warm-so warmish?

I would guess the water will look orange no matter what, but try not to panic as most colored bags come through just fine.

I think "spot scrubbing" causes more noticeable issues than overall dunking when it comes to color loss, so be careful when removing ink. I try to have the bath ready, then do an alcohol treatment right by the sink on the spots and dunk it right away before the alcohol evaporates and the ink resets.

Ooh awesome tactics on ink! I've had some tough encounters with exploded pens in black leather this past month.. I thought they were going to be quick rehabs, until the ink started dissolving in water >_< and yet the line of ink on the front flap of my BT station bag would not budge.

I think I'll work on the orange this weekend, and get the rest of my loot (that i'm confident are real) authenticated. I've been lazy with taking pictures and transferring to the computer. My rehab pile is growing, but I have been slow with the work!

IMO a ink spot that has been worked on but not fully removed is impossible to get out-it's like you've got to get it out all at once because you're less likely to be successful if the alcohol dissolves it, then drys, and you go back to work on it later.

With the orange, I would do my best to "rinse through" the spot as much as possible rather than scrubbing so you don't end up with a light spot highlighting a halfway removed spot. Are they stray ink spots or exploded pen spots? If it's not something that shows through the outside I would probably leave them alone altogether, but that's just me.

They're really just a couple of ink dots, and one very light line on the outside that i saw (so light that it might not be ink.. we'll see!). The inside flap has an ink mark near the creed, but i'm not even going to bother with that. No major ink challenges this time around, just the evening out of the color - the handle is so darkened, it's more like a red-orange that got a "film" of gray/black which must be crud :p There are signs of wear in the form of lighter dyed areas too, but it's really not too bad - doesn't stand out as much as faded piping on really work black Willises, say.

This is kind of related but not sure if it will work or not for you. I have a rarer Bonnie Cashin that I was afraid to dunk since it is lined in a barely holding together stripe lining fabric. Sooo.... I realized that Blackrocks isn't JUST a conditioner, but it's also a cleaner. I put bits of Blackrock directly on the dirty handles and let it do it's work for a few minutes, then repeatedly buffed the polish and dirt back off with a white t-shirt type fabric, over and over again til it did improve the look of some of the dirt...safely. I think combined with a bath, it might help some since you'll hopefully be safe bathing your bag as well!

Thanks for the input, ladies! Leather CPR is also a cleaner too, per description on the tube.. And I have a big bottle of Effax Leder-Combi, which is supposed to be a cleaner and conditioner in one - for saddles and whatnot. It worked great with black bags, but spot-tested on a tan equestrian flap, it darkened the leather just a tad. It will be rehab experimentation time for me this weekend (trying to keep myself away from the outlet, which is like 20 minutes away). I just wish I had more of the less expensive bags to experiment with!

I bought a Coach bag in British Tan and rehabbed it following the advice on this thread, and it's been great so far. The only thing is the bag has some light scuff marks that doesn't go away even after conditioning multiple times(I use leather CPR). Are there any suggestions on how to tackle this problem I am having?

I wish I had before/after pix of the scuff marks on my BT Logan bag, but I can tell you that Black Rocks Leather 'n Rich took them out, almost completely.

Thanks! I had read that Black Rocks tends to darken the leather though, in your experience was that the case? This is part of a project as a gift to my mom so I really want it to be as perfect as possible!
