This will be my first rehab, BECAUSE OF YOU PEOPLE, ahem, and I was wondering if all the turnlocks are the same size?

Should I just buy a set for $6 on the bay?

Nice buy and perfect for a first rehab project! I think that is a standard turnlock but when you call Coach customer service and give them the style number they will be able to tell you.

I usually prefer getting free replacement parts from Coach - because they are free and they are coach! But it can take them a long time to get it to you, so if you are eager it would be faster to buy one. You can also try stopping in at the coach boutique to ask if they have a turnlock kit handy.

The SAs do not like ebay so just say that you got it from a relative and want to fix it up. Let us see how it comes out, good luck!

...Now for the bad (I must be crazy) news! I picked up a burgandy spectator checkbook wallet for $4. Hyacinth's best guess is that it is from the Legacy Spectator line in the early 2000s. The wallet is in terrible condition. It is water-damaged, warped, and stinks of mold and mildew! The khaki sig lining has turned green from mold in one compartment! And the plastic id case window is ripped. I kind of felt bad about it and wanted to try and fix it up but now I am thinking that I must be crazy and should let it rest in peace.

There are pics at the link below, if I do attempt to rehab it does anyone have some advice as to how to go about it? Help!

I realize that there isn't much that I could do that would be worse for this poor wallet but I am concerned that giving it a bath will reactivate the mold and mildew. Any suggestions for treating it at the same time I am washing it to prevent that?

Hi everyone,

This is my husband's old coach briefcase that I've been meaning to donate - until I found this thread. I've read up on some members' methods for rehabbing old coach bags. Do you guys think this is restorable? It's pretty beat up and I'm willing to use it as an experimental bag for rehabbing. I'm not sure if I can bathe it though, it's structured and rather stiff. Any thoughts would be appreciated! :D

I rehabbed a briefcase that was in much worse shape than that, see the link below. I think that you will be able to wash it and it will come out very nice.

You can find a lot of info about rehabbing bags at the 2 threads below:

I am about to buy this from Leather World to work on some other moldy bags, and it seems like mold is something I"m going to keep running into since I love vintage stuff-- so I'll let you know how it goes tho' may not get it done for a while yet.:

I am rehabbing a wallet right now that is a teal green color but has the brown sig lining that yours seems to have. The lining did get a little bit of color bleed from the green dye, but not too bad. The wallet did/does bleed a lot when being washed. But, I plan to just paint and/or re-dye mine and see how it goes. I'd say dunk it into a concentrated Lysol based cleanser or else get the Mildew kit for this and future projects??

sigh...no mold here in the desert.

My mystery bag that I "won" on Saturday didn't ship till tonight, which of course, means tomorrow. I can't wait to get my hands on that thing to see if it's what I want it to be.

I sure will, thank you!!

Question for all my wonderful rehabbers...is this type of purse washable? My aunt has one that I've been wanting to take off her hands.

Thanks for any help/suggestions!

I would definitely give a bag like that a bath, but a word of caution about pebbled leather bags. You have to be careful not to slather on a thick, opaque leather conditioner like Apple or Leather CPR after it dries. The conditioner can get stuck in the little nooks and crannies and then you can't get it out.

I usually use a thinner conditioner like Lexol for a pebbled bag. If you do use a thicker conditioner be sure to apply it very lightly. You can use multiple applications but they should be light and give the bag time to absorb the conditioner before putting on another coat. Good luck!

Hello Everyone! I'm new to the forum and was so happy to find this thread! What a great idea! And it's right up my alley! I have a couple of questions for you rehabbers. Here are a couple of pictures of a project I'm currently working on. Here's what I started with:
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...eat=directlink
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...eat=directlink
So I started gently trying to clean up the suede. I made good progress at first with Kiwi Suede cleaner and also with Spot Shot and a brush. But me being one to never let well enough alone, I persisted. I took it to the sink and with Shout Advanced and my Tide Stain stick I proceeded to use small circular motions and dab with a cloth at the spots. But eventually I had so much "soap" in the suede I decided I had to try to thoroughly rinse with the sink sprayer. I got the soap out and you'll see the suede looks half way decent now.
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...eat=directlink
But you might have also noticed in this picture that I "mobilized" the dye and it bled into the fabric.
I have taken alcohol to spots in the fabric and managed to get some of the ink out. But I don't think I'm going to get it ALL]out this way. Suggestions?

Does anyone have a better way to clean suede?

I'd be game to play with some dye to enrich the color on the suede if anyone has suggestions of brands of that I should order....

The handles (smooth) are faded and stained. Would the dye here be the same dye as the one I'd get for the suede.

What's your opinion of my "dipping" the whole bag in pink dye?

So, you see I'm foolishly brave and willing to learn from failed projects. Thanks for your input in advance.

OK, this comes with a total disclaimer, it might work, it might make it worse, but I would wrap carefully in a light pillow caseand wash it in a washing machine with towels or other such things to pad it.

In my experience, the type of fabric they use in this bag doesn't hold onto dye that well so washing it might get the dye out of the fabric. It could also make the dye spread further. But I would try that step before I dyed it. If you are going to dye it, it would probably help to have the bag really clean anyway so that the dye takes evenly.

Again, totally a guess. I think that's what I would do with that bag at this point though.

Docride is the Queen of leather repair. She works with Hermes most of the time, perhaps you could PM her? She works with saddles, etc much of the time. She has a thread Hermes Rehab & Rescue. I would flip through that first to see if she has addressed the subject in that, if not, maybe a PM? If anyone will know, she will. She restored a patent Kelly bag, back to it's original leather finish. Queen is almost an understatement, she is awesome!
