Thanks! I had read that Black Rocks tends to darken the leather though, in your experience was that the case? This is part of a project as a gift to my mom so I really want it to be as perfect as possible!

I agree with ledobe, black rocks may darken a BT bag (but just a little) and it gives it a rich, natural color; and really helps to even out the color and hide the flaws.

Quick Questions:
1) when you remove your turnlocks to clean out the verdigris, do you leave them off during the dunk? Then assemble it all when the bag dries?

2) (Katev, and anyone else who wants to pipe in) When removing the turnlocks and cleaning that yucky green out, do you put some diamond glaze on any or all of the turn lock/plate assembly to keep further verdigris returning (even on just the flat plate part- that has no moving parts)? I know you've used it for other areas of the brass.

Thanks...am just about to dunk a Taft and have never removed the turnlocks before because I don't want to weaken them and I know bending metal does forever weaken it slightly. I did a crappy job prying the teeth lose unfortunately because the bag is about 17 years old and was really stuck on so now the teeth are kinda "wonky" ....oh well we'll see what happens...she's gonna be gorgeous though!!

I use diluted "diamond glaze" on brass bags that have verdigris to seal the metal. I have heard that "paper glaze" does the same thing and that it is cheaper and easier to find.

When I removed the turnlock hardware I left it off during the bath and drying periods and while I was conditioning the leather. I didn't put them back on until the very end.

Thank you! I was wondering if the washing/drying process would cause the areas of leather to change shape or make it harder to return the hardware- post wash. I'd bought the diamond glaze a long time ago when you said you'd tried it originally. Never really had tried it yet, and am thinking I'll do that now. It can't hurt to put it inside the hidden areas and let them dry thoroughly.

Speaking of British Tan and Black Rocks, y'all may have seen this bag in the ID thread. I didn't even wait for positive identification before I dumped this poor Musette in the kitchen sink:

Measurements are approximately 10 X 16 X 5. It's pretty smooshed but those measurements are close, maybe off by half an inch.

I don't have "after" pix yet, she's not finished, I'm just sort of sharing because I have no one else who cares about my journey. :p

I think you can see what I believe to be oil spots pretty well in those pix and what you CAN'T see is that she was flat as a pancake!

I dumped her in a the sink with some pretty hot water, rubbed in some extra Dawn dish soap on the bigger oily areas, and just let her soak for a good long while. I thought it was interesting that even in "the tub" the sides unflattened themselves and she took her normal shape!

When I took her out to rinse, the spots were still very apparent, so I opted to put her in the washing machine. I actually put SHOUT! on the outside of the bag, secured her in a pillow case and threw in a bunch of towels and such to pad her journey, and washed her on hot, with a prewash cycle AND an extra rinse (no spin).

The cycle finished right before I went to bed, and I stuffed her with towels and put her on the back patio before I went to bed. I made sure to leave her where she would still be in the shade if I slept in a little.

However, when I pulled her out of the washer I noticed a little bit of suds still on her. I got up and put some conditioner on her, butthat was just bugging me! So I just gave her an extra good rinse in the sink again. Darn it-she was about half dry.

Anyway, I know I'm not going to get all those darn spots out! So I guess I'm going to have to depend on BlackRocks.

Sorry for the long post, with no end results (she's sitting out on the patio in the shade, enjoying the warmth...I just needed to vent a little.

Calling on Australian TPFers with a request for advice about rehabbing an Oroton Bag!

I found a large camel Oroton tote at the Salvation Army Thrift Store for $3.06 yesterday. I'd never heard of Oroton before but the bag was very pretty and well-made and the leather is very soft.

The bag is dirty, especially the suede cloth lining and it has lost some of the camel color from the corners and handles on the outside of the bag.

Please take a look at the pics at the link below and let me know if you have some rehab advice, thanks!

I have now washed 3 bags in my washing machine, thanks to you Ledobe! The first one I foolishly didn't put in a pillow slip ( frustrated and determined to get her clean, I also near drowned her in launsdry stain removal spray), but the other two worked really well - even a bleeker shopper with tattersall lining. The first one is much cleaner than before, she just suffered a few dings to her piping. Thanks for the inspiration!

P.S your satchel is very cool. I love the style

Thanks, I like your musette bag a lot, too!

Thanks! I've been looking for something like this for quite awhile, and I knew about the Musette but I don't think I've ever seen one listed. This one was sooo badly listed (they didn't even close the turnlocks to take the two pix they posted...but I knew what it was. When I asked the seller the measurements she responded 10 X 9, but obviously, the bag isn't square.

It's like I held my breath and jumped into the deep end for the first time...I was reasonably sure I'd come out ok, but it was a little scary. :) If not there is always the eBay buyer protection stuff, since she was a new seller and you never know, but I've never had to use that, the few issues I've had have been resolved pretty easily

She was $50 so not like one of your deals, but if she ends up reasonably ok she's WELL worth it.

LOL-I know it sounds radical but I think it's easier on the bag sometimes to subject it ONE wash and it almost always gets ALL the dirt in one shot, rather than repeated dunkings-and it's also easier on the bag and lining than scrubbing, IMO.

I also think it is the best way to get ALL the soap out after you clean it. I used so much soap and Shout (which is a laundry stain remover, if you don't have it down under) on the Musette in order to get all the oil or what ever it has on it out, that I think needed one more good rinse. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm going to get all the oil out of this one...

I don't know if you have this easily available in the States - but I have used white spirits (also called dry cleaning fluid) on my Cashin body bag remake to try and remove the ink stains with no ill effects to the leather, and no colour loss. It was moderately successful, but the ink may have been set by the washing and dying that happened before I got hold of her. The white spirits is a bit smelly though, and she still has a little pong her. Not enough to stop me using her though.

I love that bag-I'm glad "one of us" got her. Did you see the "newish with tags" vintage version that was listed around the same time? I cannot find the listing now, and I thought I'd saved it, but it looked really cool too.

Dry cleaners can barely use dry cleaning fluid here so I'd be surprised if we could actually buy it...maybe someone else knows? Anyone tried Dryel on a bag? I know it comes with a spot cleaner that's supposed to be effective, and heck, I've got a package of that stuff I've never tried...hmmm...

Thanks katev and ledobe!

I bought a vintage red regina for cheap, but it has quite a few scuffs on the exterior, and I am wondering if I should use blackrocks on it or would it turn the red into something horribly dark :amazed:

I've been wondering about this - why do I see so many bags listed with pictures where the flaps are just hanging loosely and not closed with the turnlocks? What are these sellers thinking? There are too many like this to be an oversight. Please tell me why!!!

I love your Musette. I can hardly wait for the afters.
