I need some advice. I got this cute little shoulder bag with the attached inside kisslock coin purse. It appears to be two-tone, but I am not sure. I think the trim is going to need some touching up, and I don't know if I should try to match the main color of the bag or keep it two-tone. Hyacinth doesn't know if they made this bag in a spectator version. I'm almost convinced that it is two-tone because even the trim on the inside where it wouldn't have been exposed to fading is a different color. This bag has already been bathed but not conditioned.

Cute bag! The colors look pretty close in the photos, usually spectator bags are more obvious IMO. I would probably just try the blackrocks first and see how it looks.

I have a question about using acrylic paint to rehab a white leather bag. I recently picked up a white legacy zip at a garage sale for $8 and Hyacinth has authenticated the bag. The bag was in good shape and the inside is very clean. I gave it a bath and it brightened it up but it still has a dingy look to it and some scuffed areas. I could try washing it again but I'm not sure that would make much difference.

I am thinking of trying the approach, used successfully by other rehabbers, of mixing the leather cpr and acrylic paint and rubbing the mix into the surface of the bag. I have a few questions for those that have used this technique, please take a look at AT pics at the link below and let me know what you think, thanks!

- Do you think that this bag is a good candidate for the conditioner and paint mix?
- Should I polish the hardware first or wait until after I condition/paint the bag?
- About how much paint do you add to the conditioners?
- Do you recommend any specific brand/shade of white paint? I have a bottle of acrylic white paint but it is a bright white; is it better to get something a little less glossy and more chalky?
- How do you apply the mixture, with your fingers?
- After it dries do you apply another application of plain conditioner?
- Do you have any other advice or tips for working with the mixture?

Thanks in advance!

I have had a couple of successful events (100%) painting beige/white bags. My answers to your questions:
- Do you think that this bag is a good candidate for the conditioner and paint mix?
#YES
- Should I polish the hardware first or wait until after I condition/paint the bag?
#BEFORE
- About how much paint do you add to the conditioners?
#I use 7:3 ratio for the first round, and go to 1:1 for the remaining applications (as well as the last thin overall coating for the whole bag).
- Do you recommend any specific brand/shade of white paint? I have a bottle of acrylic white paint but it is a bright white; is it better to get something a little less glossy and more chalky?
# It is best to bring your bag to craft store and find the best match to a matt color.
- How do you apply the mixture, with your fingers?
# paint sponge brush
- After it dries do you apply another application of plain conditioner?
#at least two coats yes, if the goal is to cover blemishes you often need more spot touch-up.
- Do you have any other advice or tips for working with the mixture?
# play with it and don't be nervous. It will be just fine!

Thanks. I think you are probably right. It would be an unusual combination for a spectator bag. Maybe the leather used for the trim just didn't absorb the dye as well.

This is great information, thank you! When you say a 7:3 ratio is that 7 parts of paint to 3 parts of conditioner (or the opposite?) Thanks again!

I have a newer style coach bag that i picked up. It is usable the way it is but it originally had a cross body strap. It is a baby blue color. I was wondering if you can get replacement straps ? And is there a good way to clean sateen fabric?:help::catlick:
You could call Coach to see if they have a replacement strap for it but they might not. There is a seller on ebay who sells replacement straps but I doubt you would find baby blue. I have a blue Poppy that came with a off-white webbing type cross-body strap, so you might consider using a white or off-white webbing strap with your blue bag.

If your purse isn't extremely dirty, I spot clean with mild spray cleaner, wiping with a cloth. I try not to use anything that would require rinsing unless the bag is really dirty. In that case, I will use dish soap and water, taking care to keep the leather out of the water. Then the bag will need thorough rinsing. You will want to avoid letting the creed soak up water. Squeeze out the excess water, wrap in towels to absorb more water, and then let your bag dry and it should be fine.

Can you post pictures of your bag? What is the name and style number? How badly is it soiled?

Coach sells some replacement straps and you can get the most common styles and colors from SilverCoach on ebay at:
http://stores.ebay.com/SCECKERT-SILVER-COACH?_trksid=p4340.l2563

But I think light blue will be a difficult match. Perhaps you could try a white strap or maybe substitute a chain strap that matches the hardware.

I have successfully used Coach Fabric Cleaner 60149 to spot-clean sateen bags.

Check out the Chester I rehabbed a while back...

It's hard to tell if the color is the same, but I think the Linen acrylic might be a good choice for you. I used my fingers to apply the paint/conditioner, but you could use a small piece of sponge (finer texture, smoother). I think mixing it with conditioner helps it not be so chalky. And I'm pretty sure I conditioned with plain CPR after it dried completely (overnight, to be safe!)

Funny, I saw the same style, same color bag at my Goodwill last week for $14.99 and passed as I have tooooo many light-colored bags. Yours will be beautiful, I'm sure...can't wait to see!

You have willpower to pass up this bag at $15! Thanks for the information. I normally try to match paint to the bag but I didn't know if it mattered as much with white, but there are many shades and finishes so I have the hangtag in my wallet to take to the fabric store. I remember the Chester, it came out great, thanks!

As others have said, red is tricky and you might lose color with a bath. I often get a little color release into the bath water with black, navy, brown, and tan bags but it is not significant and doesn't harm the bag.

Bright-colored bags like red and orange are different. Sometimes they go through a bath without problems and sometimes there is significant color lost through the process.

If you could post pics of your bags it would be easier to advise you. Are your bags glove-tanned leather or made of fabric or another type of leather? Are they lined or unlined? Are they damaged or just dirty? How bably are they soiled?

If the red bag is unlined, glove-tanned leather and it isn't badly soiled, marked, or spotted - you could try surface cleaning before resorting to a bath.

Vacuum it out well, clean it inside and out with lysol non-bleach wipes or non-alcohol baby wipes, shine up the hardware with a good-quality metal polish, and condition the bag with a good quality conditioner like lexol, apple, leather cpr, etc.

Good luck!

Hi Katev, I have scratches and scuffs on the clasp of my Kristin Laila. Do you think that a metal polish will dull them or get them out? Thanks.

I picked up the linen on a whim when I was at Wal-Mart and walked past the arts & crafts section. I didn't have my bag or tag with me but it was a perfect match for my lightweight drawstring flap. The ink spot is in a pretty hidden place in that bag so I figured if I was just close it would be good enough, but it is a truly perfect match. Hyacinth aged that bag at late 80's if that helps any.

I've been thinking about using it on a couple older ivory color bags. It doesn't match exactly, the bags look clean to me but the white has taken on a greyish tone. I think it's just aging-they're probably 70's bags. I've been trying to decide if I want to try to even them out using the linen, but I'm not in any hurry. They're OK as they are and I do not want to take a chance messing either one up.

Now that I think about it, I have a blue bag where each section is a slightly different color but it is very, very slight (like different dye lots) and not as obvious as on this bag.

I have an old, again I would guess 70's, flap bag (original Patricia's Legacy?) that the trim is off from the rest of the bag. The bag is SUCH a dark brown I wouldn't be surprised if it had been dyed at some point, but if so, it was a long time ago. And it could just be burnished so that it's darker.

I dunked it once just because I'm curious about the color, the water was pretty dark but but the difference in the two browns stayed about the same. So I don't know if it's supposed to be that way or the leather just aged differently. I didn't really finish rehabbing that one, and I may not drag it out again till the fall when I feel like carrying a dark brown bag.

I have that bag in both navy and pale gray and I can tell you that for some reason the trim is a different color than the rest of the bag - I have not bathed either one, but have tried various moisturizers like Leather CPR. Just wanted to let you know that. I think sometimes the trim came from a different hide which took the dye differently - I had the problem with a pocket purse the bag was one color navy and the trim another.
