I am finally catching up on thid thread/line of thought. I am finishing up a blue-gray Whitney bag right now, and there is a definite strange mismatch in color. I'll post a photo tomorrow. It's too precise to be a fading issue, etc.

I need some advice. I got this cute little shoulder bag with the attached inside kisslock coin purse. It appears to be two-tone, but I am not sure. I think the trim is going to need some touching up, and I don't know if I should try to match the main color of the bag or keep it two-tone. Hyacinth doesn't know if they made this bag in a spectator version. I'm almost convinced that it is two-tone because even the trim on the inside where it wouldn't have been exposed to fading is a different color. This bag has already been bathed but not conditioned.

Thanks. I think you are probably right. It would be an unusual combination for a spectator bag. Maybe the leather used for the trim just didn't absorb the dye as well.

Who had that old rambler that turned out to be two toned? Maybe it's something like that?

Now that I think about it, I have a blue bag where each section is a slightly different color but it is very, very slight (like different dye lots) and not as obvious as on this bag.

I have that bag in both navy and pale gray and I can tell you that for some reason the trim is a different color than the rest of the bag - I have not bathed either one, but have tried various moisturizers like Leather CPR. Just wanted to let you know that. I think sometimes the trim came from a different hide which took the dye differently - I had the problem with a pocket purse the bag was one color navy and the trim another.

I am finally catching up on this thread/line of thought. I am working on a Whitney bag right now that is a blue/gray color and there is a definite strip on the side of the bag that is completely different in color, and it's not a fading issue. I'll post a photo tomorrow. so strange.

I don't have the laila but I do have kristin bags with both silver and gold tone hardware. I think that an all-metal polish like Wenol would brighten up the hardware and perhaps hide the more superficial scratches. It probably won't do much for deep scratches. Can you post a few pictures of the damage?

Thanks for your advice. Where can I find Wenol? Here are some pics of my bag.

I am trying to use acrylic paint, the thicker stuff that comes in the tubes, to fill in some indentations in the leather. It seems to work fine but when it dries it is dull. When I try to put conditioner over the dried paint, it loosens it and removes it. Is there a trick here?

I thought I knew how to multi quote but still messed it up -and had to redo it. I wish there was a post delete button LOL

I too am trying to find a local place that sells Wenol. I've never seen it.

I have heard that they sell Wenol at auto parts stores but I have checked several and never found it. I buy it on ebay, sometimes with my ebay bucks. Here's an ebay vendor at the link below, nma.

Your laila is a gorgeous bag, I think you should take her to a jeweler first to ask for an opinion about polishing out the scratches. Good luck!

Yeah, I got a Patricia's Legacy finally! I have never come across one during my thrifting expeditions, except for one fake, until the other night. I stopped at Savers about 15 minutes before closing during the 25% off sale. I figured that every thing would be picked over but instead I got lucky! I found a mahagony Patricia's Legacy for $4.50 and a navy (or steel gray) Willis for $6!

The Patricia's Legacy has some condition issues and I will have to take it to the cobbler for stitching repair and it is missing the hangtag. The Willis is beat-up, faded, and scuffed but it is intact and I think it will rehab well.

But I am glad that Savers has come down in their pricing. Lately they have been pricing Coach bags very high, like $50 for a camel bag with pen marks all over the outside of the front flap, geez! I don't know if they have changed their policies or if somebody new was doing the pricing the other night - but I'm happy!

Hyacinth just authenticated my 2 new acquisitions and you can see them at the links below, including closeups of the damage to the PL bag; I hope it is fixable!

I have never tried to use it on indentations but "multiple thin applications" worked well for me on piping repair. Maybe you can find a paint with a glossier finish?

I am using the acrylic paint that you would use to paint a picture on canvas. I don't think they make a glossy version but I think there is a gloss that comes in the bottles like the craft paints I could put on afterward. My bigger concern is that is the paint comes off too easily. I want something more permanent.

I may be wrong here, I have yet to paint a bag, but actually have Angelus paint on it's way to me now for a rehab. When I was browsing the EBay seller's store ( nordshoe ) I saw this product called Resolene which I also ordered. You use it when you dye a bag so there is no color transfer, but it also mentioned when a bag is painted as well. It's pretty inexpensive, and I want to say there is a glossy finish and a more matte finish. I would check it out.

wow...really nice. I blew the chance to snag a Patricia super cheap on ebay the other day .... Nice bags!! Nice deals. Now if my local thrift shops would just be a bit less crazy on their pricing.

Thanks. I ordered my Fiebings dye from nordshoe. It produces a sheen itself so I wonder how much more sheen Resolene would make. One of the bags that has the gouges I dyed with Fiebings and I tried to put the Fiebings dye over the paint but it just makes a mess of the paint. I am going to let the paint dry for a few days to see if that makes a difference.

There is an ebay seller in England that sells a leather putty for filling in gouges but they say you have to use their leather dye with it so I was afraid to take a chance. All of the materials I can find for filling in leather gouges are designed for leather car seats which isn't really the same as the thick Coach leather.

Attention rehabbers in the NYC area:

If you are near Long Island City you might be interested in the information below about upcoming "buy the bag" events from Housing Works, a charitable organization.

Apparently you pay $25 for a bag and then you dig through the piles of stuff (bring gloves!) searching for great vintage bags and other cool items. You can have anything that you can fit into the bag. Good luck!
