I let my basic bag soak overnight, so much brown ( shoe polish ) kept rinsing out. Finally after a 12 hr soak and and few more rinses she is clean. When I soaked the bag, the inside felt slimey from whatever the seller used. I used a brush and was able to get it all out. It was odd, since the bag looked good when she came to me. Anyway, she is draining, and I will stuff with towels and let her dry later today.

True about the Dooneys. I do love them!! Love the vintage all weather leather ones. But unlike Coach bags, they just have a low resale value. I don't know why but it's kind of frustrating.

The vintage Dooneys are not being re-issued by Dooney the way Coach is re-issuing their vintage bags. Coach doing that has created far more awareness, and made the bags really desirable and collectible. For the price to go up on the Dooney ones the demand needs to go up, and as of this moment not many people are carrying them and not many people want them. But, as people get more and more into finding older bags and refurbishing them, and carrying vintage bags, the Dooneys will start to get carried as well. I washed one of my Dooneys yesterday, and after that experience, I really like the way they are made. They are tough bags, and they are going to be around for a while.

I haven't tried bathing a Dooney...did you just dunk it in water like you would an old Coach? The Dooney interior is made differently and the all weather leather is made so differently than glove leather so I've not tried it.

I tried that first, and the water did not penetrate the bottom of the bag enough, and when it started to dry I thought it was ruined, it had water lines and marks all over the bottom. I ended up re-dunking it and soaking it until the water evenly penetrated every bit of the leather. I took pics and documented on my blog:
http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?bl...editor/target=post;postID=8101591757084614976

The bottom is a sandwich of leather and cardboard that has been treated with some kind of coating. I actually did two of them last night, the Equestrain and this one, I did not do the Hobo because I did not want to mess with another British Tan bottom, it takes a long time to get the water to soak in evenly and I thought doing one and documenting it was enough. The Equestrian has a bottom where the cardboard is completely wrapped in leather and then the whole thing is bolted in, and the bottom is the dark leather, so it was simple, just like doing a Coach, the water never even got into the cardboard on that one.

I think I got mine at Target, in their shoe department on some dinky little rack they have polish on. I know the best one I ever had was made by Coach, and I am pretty sure Ugg sells cleaning kits, and probably suede erasers as well.

The ink stain I think I would attempt to just cover, maybe with tiny dabs of acrylic blended with a moisturizer... I have not had any luck removing ink from the suede linings of any Coach purses, and I think the Ugg suede is softer. It is very strong, and you can do a lot to some Ugg boots... I have one pair that I wore in winter in Colorado, and they are not pretty anymore, but they kept my feet dry and warm our entire trip, which honestly I was not expecting.
I would think that you could mask that ink stain with the acrylic, in tiny little dabs that penetrate the suede without mushing it down or flattening it, and then after it dries you could lightly use a suede brush to just texture and blend it again. Might be far less risky than trying to wet the ink, as it might run where you really don't want it and make it worse.
Here are some photos of the suede brush I have now:
http://coachbagrehab.blogspot.com/2012/05/suede-brush.html

It has nylon bristles, where my Coach one used to have metal and nylon, and the eraser seems a bit more crumbly than the Coach one was... it was a casualty of my divorce, and wow I wish my ex had not tossed it!!!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/AUTHENTIC-C...WH_Handbags&hash=item19d09118b2#ht_520wt_1123

The only Coach suede brush I could find on e-bay like the one I used to have:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/AUTHENTIC-C...WH_Handbags&hash=item19d09118b2#ht_520wt_1123

You can see that the brush has dark bristles, and the eraser is a dark color as well.

thank you for all the information!

So here's the final deal on my basic bag (or is it zipper clutch? what is the call on this one?)

She was of my two dirty girls:

She came from the eBay seller wrapped in Christmas paper. :)

Creed with missing glued on serial No:

No major damage:

She looks pretty after her bath:

I was just never happy with her color afterwards. For some reason I don't have a good picture but she was british tan, but it was really just a yellowish greyish dingy color.

So I dyed her (gasp) with Fiebings tan. First I washed, then I just went over with the wool swab that comes with the dye and tried to get it as even as possible. After that, the color looked pretty even, or at least about as even as it did before I did anything...but still a little streaky and spotty.

I let it dry a little more then dropped a little more dye into the last of my apple condioner bottle and rubbed and buffed it in, then finished with Black Rocks. She's soft and supple now and I like the color:

We're bag twins, I rehabbing a basic zipper bag right now. She is drying on my dining room table. I soaked her overnight to get the shoe polish out, finally after a few more rinses she was clean. I'm planning on starting her conditioning tomorrow.

looking great!!! I love these old basic bags with the double skinny strap. So feminine and cute. The newest models have only a single heavier strap.

Thanks ladies. I was iffy on this bag for awhile but I think she'll get to go out in the world. I would like to find a longer dogleash style strap so I can wear her cross body sometimes. The double strap is pretty short!

I imagine I'll end up with a bag down the road that I can switch out.

Hello ladies! Still haven't rehabbed since winter, but I'll be starting again soon (maybe today?). I do have a question though... I have at least 15 bags waiting to be worked on, and some of them are really dry. Would it be wise to condition them all while they're on the waiting list, so they don't get dryer/worse? Or is it a case of "they've been dry for years, a couple more days/weeks/months won't hurt them significantly"? It would seem silly to condition one today, and then dunk it tomorrow. Thoughts?

I don't know if it's silly or not but I usually don't condition before rehabbing.

Shoe polish and ink are the pits! Sounds like you got the gunk out, good for you!

Your basic bag is looking beautiful congrats!

I am really pleased with the NYC-made bag that I found at Savers today for $17.50. I thought it was a bucket bag but Hyacinth says that it is a Shoulder Sac 9730 from around 1989.

The color is great and it is in really good shape and pretty clean for its age. It does have some water marks on the bottom and the straps have darkened dirty areas, so I have to decide whether or not to give her a bath and risk losing some color or just surface cleaning her. Any suggestions?
