I am really pleased with the NYC-made bag that I found at Savers today for $17.50. I thought it was a bucket bag but Hyacinth says that it is a Shoulder Sac 9730 from around 1989.

The color is great and it is in really good shape and pretty clean for its age. It does have some water marks on the bottom and the straps have darkened dirty areas, so I have to decide whether or not to give her a bath and risk losing some color or just surface cleaning her. Any suggestions?

Very pretty!!! I went back to my Savers today, and found nothing at all, as usual, lol!! We went to the Coach store to use the 25% off invite I had, and got a new style Willis bag in a bright tangerine color for my husband's niece that is graduating. One of the store managers was leaving for the day, and she had a british tan vintage Janice's legacy... it made me smile to see it, and she said her boyfriend found it at the Salvation Army for $20! We are not the only ones carrying vintage Coach bags!!

I love this bucket bag, and I would try to refrain from washing it if at all possible, or possibly wash it in cold water... has anyone tried that to see if the color might bleed less? The red one I got at Savers yesterday (and yes, I have been waiting a whole year to be able to say that) did not need a bath, and it has a dark lining, so I just wiped her down with Lysol wipes and called it a day.

I washed a red patricias legacy from 1998 in cold water with some wool wash and very little colour came off - only a very slight pinkish tinge to the water, and only when I reached in and scrubbed out the inside with my hand.

I also washed my burgundy kisslock tote in cold water and very little colour came off - granted though, lots came off with the saddle soap I used to clean it first and with pretty well anything else I touch it with!

Nice find too!

DUNK HER!

:) It's a pretty bag. Congrats on the find!

Your basic bag is looking beautiful congrats!

aww...thank you ma'am. I have this thing with trying to keep vintage stuff "stock", like cars, but this bag just needed a fresh coat of paint. I have a feeling the color will wear in and look great. The bag is actually not as dark as it looks in that picture but it's not far off.

And one of the reasons I tested this bag was I was trying to decide what to do with my Logan, which I have a feeling will end up being a favorite. The bag is in decent shape but sort of scratched below the flap at the bottom. I have decided not to dye her, I think I will just condition with black rocks and she'll look fine.

I wasn't sure I'd ever carry the basic, but it looks like she's going to make the cut. I'll try to post the pix of my city bag tomorrow...not as sure about that one.

The wallet that someone wanted to see a rehab of is done:
http://coachbagrehab.blogspot.com/2012/05/coach-wallet-rehab.html

It was a very simple rehab, and the wallet dried really fast, and no problem whatsoever with change to the shape or size. For removing the cigarette odor, just soak it longer, and while it is drying put it in a closed space with a box of baking soda.
Questions:

How would I shine the brass?

Does it have to be Ivory soap?

How long do I leave the wallet soaking in the water?

Is it necessary to stuff the wallet while its drying so it maintains the shape or can I leave the wallet alone and it'll still be shaped the same?

One of the reasons I wash some of the vintage bags is to reshape and "firm" the leather. With a wallet...mmm...may or may not be necessary but I'd probably put some uncolored paper or some such at the beginning of the drying stages to make sure you don't end up with a flat wallet...I usually wait till it's partially dry and in the shape I want then remove the paper so it can dry faster.

I'll let someone else give you info on the brass, it's not particularly my thing. I found some Brasso in my stash of cleaning stuff and that's what I use but others may have more options & opinions. Or you can look at the search function on this thread. I know JOODLZ came up with a concoction, actually there are lots of ways to clean brass, so I wouldn't spend a lot of money on any one option.

As for soap, I use whatever dish soap, or laundry soap, or woolite I have around. While you don't want to use anything particularly harsh, I think the most important thing is to make sure you completely rinse all the soap out.

If you call Coach for replacement hangtags, can you get multiples? I have 3 bags missing their tags...

I have gotten 2 at one time. I have heard that there is a limit per year to the number they will give you but I have never encountered that. You can also stop by the boutique and ask for a hangtag and they will give you one if they have a match.

Yes, you can. I ordered 5 the last time I called. They do keep your information and your address, so they will know how many you are ordering, but I told them I am a collector and they had no problem sending me the ones I needed.

I use Wright's Brass Polish to shine brass, it was hte only brass polish at Albertson's the night I went to get some, so any brass polish will work, just be careful not to get it on the leather, and if you do get it on the leather wipe it off as fast as you can.

Any mild soap will do, I alternate between Ivory, plain water, and hotel bar soap, and for cigarette odor you might consider Tide or something like that, I have used Tide in the washing machine on a bag and it also worked well.

Leave the wallet soaking as long as you want to, until you feel the smell is gone. And sometimes water and washing wont completely remove the smell, sometimes it takes drying it out to finally banish the odor. Also, you can wash it more than once, so if it doesn't work the first time, try again.

This wallet has a very firm shape, and it dried really fast, like it was mostly dry within a few minutes of washing. I did not need to stuff it or shape it, it was a firm shape wet or dry.

So here's the final deal on my basic bag (or is it zipper clutch? what is the call on this one?)

She was of my two dirty girls:

She came from the eBay seller wrapped in Christmas paper. :)

Creed with missing glued on serial No:

No major damage:

She looks pretty after her bath:

I was just never happy with her color afterwards. For some reason I don't have a good picture but she was british tan, but it was really just a yellowish greyish dingy color.

So I dyed her (gasp) with Fiebings tan. First I washed, then I just went over with the wool swab that comes with the dye and tried to get it as even as possible. After that, the color looked pretty even, or at least about as even as it did before I did anything...but still a little streaky and spotty.

I let it dry a little more then dropped a little more dye into the last of my apple condioner bottle and rubbed and buffed it in, then finished with Black Rocks. She's soft and supple now and I like the color:

Here's a little close up of the hardware:

It came out great! There's such a nice shine and rich color to it--good job!

Great find-the color is beautiful! I would surface clean her first and if you don't get the results you are happy with I would give her a short bath.
