Early product placement? All the young successfuls back then. My intro to Coach was my sister getting a Basic Bag while she was in grad school at Columbia in the mid to late 80’s.
Early 90s. NYC. The most common graduation gift for women going into finance out of college was a Coach bag. As in “your first professional purse”. To this day I see those bags on women of certain age at various conferences, etc.

You folks are so helpful. I'm very grateful to you all for the tips. Special callouts to @Aku_no_Hana @Catbird9 @Lake Effect and @Ava_13579 for all the specific pointers. Can't wait to get started on this process with some of my pieces and share my progress with you all! Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

(P.S. I was rewatching Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy for the umpteenth time and (spoiler alert) when Ron and Veronica are having their brawl in the middle of the newsroom, Veronica pulls her mace canister from what seems to be a British Tan Stewardess Coach that's laying on the ground! I'll have to rewatch again to verify but it's fun to see them in the wild, especially in a vintage/70s context.)

Lol, on the main forum there is thread for posting movies and TV shows where Coach shows up. Now I will need to find that clip and watch lol.

Lol, around 1:45, the serious contender for a Coach bag is laying on the floor. Although it is not a Stewie. Possibly a Willis? I don’t have one to compare for the piece where the male part of the turn lock is sewn.
Good catch vickenator!
ETA, Ah yes, the dowel can seen. Although I don’t believe the Willis was introduced until the early 90’s.

Yup, I'd go with Willis too.

It's too big to be a Willis, the turnlock is too small in proportion to the size of the bag. It looks like it could be a small briefcase. No briefcases with dowels and straight-across flaps and a flat underflap pocket though...
Except this one, which we've never found a name for, but I own one - style 9097, made around 1997, serial number in mine is A7B-9097, It looks like all the details match. Measurements are about 12x10x3 inches. This is the only bag it could be. Here are some posts from the original authentication request:

By George, I think you've got it! Thanks for sharing pics of another rare style to add to my files.

I love that bag! It looks like a perfect size. Every time I carry a Willis, I wish it was a few inches bigger.

Jill Clayburgh carries a British Tan Stewardess Bag throughout the first part of An Unmarried Woman"

Good catch!

It's so sad that she died way too young!

I actually grabbed all those images and then searched for the movie in netflix etc...(no dice, boo) Jill Clayburgh in that film is sort of my ideal fashion muse. I love everything she wears (although I am not tall and lanky) and somehow I missed that she carried a stewardess!! Thank you for this

I love that movie!!!! Good spotting. There are lots of cool 70s fashions in that film. I have not watched it since I caught the vintage Coach bug.

I watched "An Unmarried Woman" last night. That Stewardess Bag should have been credited with a supporting role. She wears it in so many scenes and I couldn't take my eyes off it (but then I am vintage-Coach-obsessed ;)).

The seventies! What a time that was! Women's Lib, the sexual revolution, boho-meets-preppy fashion...and Coach was there.

Amen!

Of course, we'll completely ignore mens' polyester suits (the dreaded Leisure Suit, or what I think of as "Car Salesman Specials"), platform shoes for guys, and Disco. Especially when they occured together. :giggle:
