When I bought my very first designer bag in 2002, a small Coach bag from Holt Renfrew (I don't even know if they still carry Coach), I felt so proud and so happy with my purchase.
Today, it is incredibly unlikely I would purchase a Coach, or similar brand, as I have acquired many premier designer bags (Chanel, LV, Prada, Dior, Balenciaga, etc), and I know I would always choose those bags over my lower-priced, contemporary bags. Why? They are not as common where I live, so my bags feel more unique to me (even though I know they aren't unique but mass produced just like their contemporary counterparts) I mean their exclusivity is one of the reasons we buy them right? Further, premier designer bags are original in their concept, whereas many contemporary bags are closer to knockoffs than the "inspired by" look they claim. I love Kate Spade as many of the bags are unique to Kate Spade, whereas I can't stand Michael by Michael Kors' MK bags because they look like blatant knock offs to me and completely uninspired.
That said, I don't like the bags, but would never judge others for choosing them!
I think it's appalling to judge others for what purse they choose to spend their hard- earned money on. Bags honestly prove nothing--I know people who could buy a Birkin a week and wouldn't dream of buying more than one Coach bag, and people who rent apartments, have 3 maxed out credit cards, and yet are carrying the latest Celine tote!
In the case of the purse snob who looks down on people for something so trivial and shallow, this quote applies: what a person says about others says more about that person than who they are talking about.
Moral of the story: fashion is about self-expression and feeling great about what we wear. I don't know if any of my designer bag purchases since that first Coach have made me feel as special as when I wore that bag in my teens!
People who think they are better than others because of the money they spend, the money they have or the money they want you to think they have suffer from a level of unhappiness they are trying to fill with false admiration.
