Anti-Coach snobs...ugh

When I bought my very first designer bag in 2002, a small Coach bag from Holt Renfrew (I don't even know if they still carry Coach), I felt so proud and so happy with my purchase.

Today, it is incredibly unlikely I would purchase a Coach, or similar brand, as I have acquired many premier designer bags (Chanel, LV, Prada, Dior, Balenciaga, etc), and I know I would always choose those bags over my lower-priced, contemporary bags. Why? They are not as common where I live, so my bags feel more unique to me (even though I know they aren't unique but mass produced just like their contemporary counterparts) I mean their exclusivity is one of the reasons we buy them right? Further, premier designer bags are original in their concept, whereas many contemporary bags are closer to knockoffs than the "inspired by" look they claim. I love Kate Spade as many of the bags are unique to Kate Spade, whereas I can't stand Michael by Michael Kors' MK bags because they look like blatant knock offs to me and completely uninspired.

That said, I don't like the bags, but would never judge others for choosing them!

I think it's appalling to judge others for what purse they choose to spend their hard- earned money on. Bags honestly prove nothing--I know people who could buy a Birkin a week and wouldn't dream of buying more than one Coach bag, and people who rent apartments, have 3 maxed out credit cards, and yet are carrying the latest Celine tote!

In the case of the purse snob who looks down on people for something so trivial and shallow, this quote applies: what a person says about others says more about that person than who they are talking about.

Moral of the story: fashion is about self-expression and feeling great about what we wear. I don't know if any of my designer bag purchases since that first Coach have made me feel as special as when I wore that bag in my teens!

People who think they are better than others because of the money they spend, the money they have or the money they want you to think they have suffer from a level of unhappiness they are trying to fill with false admiration.

You're so right! Great post!

Post #88- well said and worth thinking about the working conditions of others such as China.

Post #111- You are 100% right and it is terribly important to remember this daily.

Now that just makes no sense. I have bags from Balenciaga, Celine, Chloe, Dior, Ferragamo, Lanvin, Prada, YSL, and fell hard for Coach just this year. If people can't recognize quality, and has to see (and then discriminate) the brand to decide what to think of it, then it's frankly their loss. I'll proudly carry the variety of the Coach bags I got, at a fraction of the price that they paid for theirs. Yay!

Totally agree, same as you!

I have 1 Coach bag, 1 card wallet and 5 pairs of shoes. And I love them as much as my Chanel bags. I think their leather quality is really good especially for the price.

I like to carry bags that accurately reflect who I am, and that includes my standard of living. I carry Coach because I think the brand fits me. I am a working professional with a master's degree. I don't live a luxe life, so I don't carry a luxe bag. I could afford a Chanel but I feel like that label would give a misleading picture of who I am. I also like Coach because I don't really enjoy wearing someone else's name on my bag (I'm looking at you, Kate Spade)! Don't like wearing someone else's initials, either (MK, that one's for you). But I love seeing any good-looking bag on anyone, from a Fossil satchel to a Celine tote.

I was crazy for coach in 2006-2008. Then after I graduated high school I bought my first LV bag. Some where between then and now, I decided I wouldn't look at coach anymore even though I have only purchased two LV bags in total. Recently I met someone with the attitude described by the OP. I thought it was ridiculous! I have been trying to decide what my next bag will be now that I got a good new job. I realized I was only looking at LV and other premier designers because I dismissed coach as cheap for no particular reason. I started looking at coach again, and most likely that is where my next bag will be from. I would much rather spend the remaining money on other things these days. Plus, of all the coach bags I have owned, I had a issue with two of them (after over a year of use) and coach gave me a gift card in the full original retail price of each bag. Can't beat that service!

If everything you do in your life is to please or impress other people you will live a very unhappy frustrating life. Whatever handbags you decide to purchase should both fit your lifestyle and bring you joy. Class is not determined by what's being carried on the crook of your arm, it's determined by what's in your heart and shown by the way you treat others. Enjoy your beautiful handbags that bring you joy, life is too short to worry about the haters.

Well, I had someone exhibiting her green-eyed monster for my Ferragamo shoes, so really, haters are just going to hate no matter what you do. I would just wear whatever's comfortable to me, and not give them the time of day.

I own/have owned everything from inexpensive Talbot's clutches to Louis Vuitton. I have not read this entire thread, but IMHO it really says something about a person if they are going to judge someone or look down on them for what brand of purse they carry/beer they drink/car they drive/shirt they wear, etc. I've seen it in the "premier" forums too - how certain bags/brands are "entry level" or not exclusive enough etc. Lame. A lot of these people will try to convince themselves that anyone who calls them on this is "jealous," meanwhile not realizing what their money can't buy (tact & class.) I realize this forum is all about shallow material items, and this opinion isn't popular here, but IMHO that's a pretty sad way to live your life. Buy what you like and can afford, and wear it proudly.

Couldn't have said it better myself. When I compare some of the really gaudy, fabric, factory stuff with the gorgeous leather designs from the full price store, I can't help but be annoyed. How can one brand come up with a beautiful line of Madison bags also put out crappy logo bags that bring down their level of craftsmanship a few notches? There has to be consistency and I think people would see them under a better light if they did away with the logo bags.

If I had a dollar for every person that looked at me in disbelief after admiring one of my coach leather bags and being told that it's from Coach, my wallet would definitely be a lil fatter :D
I think they are trying to combat counterfeits and are making lower quality bags at a lower price point to price out the counterfeiters. Have to say it's working. I'm seeing a lot of fos items and outlet/siggy instead of fakes. It's working lol. Since we're within an hours drive from the seattle outlet, see plenty of coach outlet items where I work. Saw one that looked like a fugly fake though
