I recently received this bag:

COACH RARE 60's VINTAGE NEW YORK CITY MAHOGANY LEATHER SHOULDER HANDBAG PURSE

Seller: salearea
Item: 370799134028
Link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/COACH-RARE-...-LEATHER-SHOULDER-HANDBAG-PURSE-/370799134028

This bag is 10.75" wide x 6" tall x 2.5" deep and the straps are very thin, similar to the straps you see on the Cashin double kisslock bags, rather than what you would see on a Basic Bag, for instance. (The 9" bag on the AUTHENTICATE THIS thread appears to have the same double strap as the Basic Bag.) Hard to tell if the straps may have been replaced, but I can't think of a bag off the top of my head with a double skinny strap and clip ends. (The strap is 34" not including the clips.)

My bag has the small cartouche stamp.

So it appears that there were two sizes of this bag and production spanned the time that Coach was using the small cartouche marking to the time they adopted the NYC Creed/Serial number.

Now that I have the bag in hand, it is obvious that the bag is dyed brown and whoever did it did not dye the inside. So it started out the color you see on the back wall of the bag and not brown.

One question, if anybody knows - did cartouche stamp pre-date or post-date the metal tag or did it depend on the bag? I am a little fuzzy on the order and timing of the cartouche stamp, the metal tag, the adoption of the creed, and the adoption of unique serial numbers.

It looks like a larger version of the Penny/Dinky. Apparently Coach was doing a lot of experimenting with strap designs and attachments during that time.

I can't answer your question about whether the stamp or the tag came first, maybe someone else can.

Style number 12988, usually with the prefix B0973 (though there may be other prefixes) has been showing up on particular style of fake.

THIS IS FAKE:

This is what style 12988 should look like:

There may be other fakes with the same style number as well as fakes that look similar to the genuine version.

Verify authenticity of the bag you're considering if unsure of authenticity.

I purchase this Coach purse at a Thrift store and I am trying to determine if it is authentic or not.

Item Name : Mia Maggie Op Art
Link: Not Applicable

I have read everything online. The seams are straight, material is a good quality. The Leather authentication label is stamped and spelled correctly. My concerns are that the rings are not fixed, they are movable. And the smaller metal links on the straps are not continuous, they have a seam on them (seen in 2nd picture). I read information online regarding a water test to determine if the bag is authentic and the water did not bead up. I just wanted to confirm if this is a legitimate way to determine the bags authenticity.

Thanks for your help:smile1:

Welcome to TPF! The bag is authentic.

In the future, post questions to authenticate a bag here: http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-shopping/authenticate-this-coach-818914.html#post24637163

J7R- serial number prefixes with a too-thick font, sometimes extra stamp impressions at the corners of the creed or serial number and usually at least one or two wrong details in the construction of the bag itself have been showing up recently. I suggest avoiding bags with this serial prefix since there's a very good chance they were not made by Coach.

Examples below. The first orange-colored bag is NOT a style 9965 (the shape is too square because the flap is much too long), and it has "elephant-skin" wrinkles where they shouldn't be. The Duffle Sac has a serious mistake in a seam.

Hi Ladies -

Are there any "tells" for fake chunky cases? I just received one and it just doesn't feel right, if you know what I mean. The leather is thin like a skinny case (I have two others with thicker leather) and the lining seems to be attached (glued) inside - I have two skinnys and two chunkys and on all of them the lining is sewn at the edges but loose from the leather so you can pinch it up.

I'll post photos to AT when I have a chance, but was just wondering if there is something I should look for (there seem to be a several different zippers and stamps, but the lining is the one thing all of mine have in common).

Thanks in advance!

I've never owned one. If you don't get an answer here, try the ATC thread. Glued-in lining doesn't sound right though. I'm guessing that it has the striped Ticking lining?

It does have the ticking lining. It is mostly one of those "this bag isn't right" feelings - the stitches are longer than my others but seem to be neat. The welting isn't trimmed as short, but the overlap is in the right place. I've got three different zippers and it matches one - so the only thing I can put my finger on is the attached lining. Will definitely go to ATC, appreciate the quick response.

I have one. The lining is in there tightly. I can pinch a little to see that it isn't glued in but just barely. The leather is pretty thick. Mine has a creed. I think they made these for several years so there might be variations from year to year. Although anything can be counterfeited, I think counterfeiters tend to concentrate on higher priced items.

Nah, they'll make anything if they think there's money to be made from it.

Here are just a few examples of items that can be had for really inexpensively yet they're faked -- and look at the number of fake keychains there are!

Thanks, Whateve and BB. I'll pinch it again but the leather definitely isn't thick. I have two chunkys(ies?) one with a creed and both are made of thick leather. It was the thin leather that made me start taking a close look at it.

I doubt that we will be able to make a call on authenticity just from photos. The seller is a tPF-er, her listing says she doesn't take returns but I am going to contact her and let her know that I am just not comfortable with it before posting to ATC.

I am looking at the creed on my Lindsey and the first set says: G1193 and I know the second set is the style number? So G is the month (July) and 11 for 2011? Not sure what 93 is for though. Please let me know if I'm right or wrong. TIA

You're correct. 93 is the plant code.
