I'm cheering on all the Ban Island dwellers. It will be a party with cosmos, lemon drops, chocolate covered strawberries and shopping from your closets! :drinks: I think I can hear the party starting already. Is that David Beckham I see MC'g the welcome party over there? :wtf:

I think Mimmie, dc and I are the lone residents on Pause Peninsula. (Anyone else?) I'll have to plan a pool party with some music, good food and a chocolate fountain to distract us so we don't turn our 1, 2 or 3 planned purchases for 2017 into 5, 6 or 12.
Spark,

I'm a permanent resident on pause peninsula...I can ever go to ban island because I have a small raft and wi fi and when something on my list comes up I need to get it. Also I've come to realize that my collection may never be done as my needs for bags change so I need the flexibility to aquire them. I'm all over the place now so I'm taking a hard pause to figure out what my next bag is.

Spark,

Your scaring me here with the sheer volume that you purged. I am up for the challenge but it will definitely be on a smaller scale. The problem is I think I may be a small hoarder. The first step I will do is go thru my clutches and see what can leave. I may need to call in reinforcements to force me to part with a few things.

I know DD was glad to get her hands on your jewelry. What statement pieces of costume did you keep? I have to remind myself that they aren't real jewelry and it's not ok to pay close to a grand for it.

This bolder above! I know I am a small borderline hoarder. I also feel like my life has an identity crisis. Between my fluctuating mommy-size, the office work/work remote, Stay at home with the kids, but I love to dress up fancy - my closet looks a bit schizophrenic.

I did the KonMari purge in 2015....while things are better, they are slowly accumulating too.

We are looking to start a huge home Reno this spring - the type where you relocate for months and remove all possessions. By far the most daunting thought as my collections of "stuff" extends to dishes, entertaining, and decorating too.

Already love this thread group :)

My only advice to those cleaning out for 2017:

Never get rid of something you'll regret getting rid of. You don't want to spend twice to rebuy something(s).

I did that with a few types of shoes lol.

But the effort of finding yourself and cleaning out is therapeutic and rewarding. Good luck to those beginning their journey!
Bake,
This is exactly why I have hard time letting go. What if I need this
I really like the idea of sticking to one bag purchase next year, but I'm also planning two trips and I usually buy a bag at those trips.

[emoji848]

What would you plan on doing?
i would plan on buying for both but on the first trip I would only allow myself a spectacular bag if I found one. If just ok then I would pass and definitely get something on the second trip

Welcome SuzieSueSure! Congratulations on #4! I'm also a mom of 4, one still in diapers so I feel ya on the mom bag + own bag dichotomy. However, I find when the kids are with me I can leave their 'supply bag' in the car and take a mini crossbody with essentials in for errands. Of course with a newborn you need everything all the time. Jujube diaper bags are incredible with insane resale value, just saying. I have a be right back backpack style one in black nylon with gold hardware that looks very grown up, but their tokidoki and hello kitty prints are super popular. The bff is probably the most popular (messenger/backpack convertible), and they can all be thrown in the wash. Very handy when carting poppy cloth diapers home (if you are into that). That said, I only carry MY bag now that my baby is out of the explosive poop stage and just have certain criteria for the size shape and structure of my own bag such that it works hands free and I can get a diaper out with one hand, etc. Exterior pockets for two sippy cups is a big plus for me these days and harder to find in a pretty leather purse that I consider one of MY bags, but not impossible! One brand i like with multiple exterior pockets for water bottles and sippys is mz wallace and it's lighter than an all leather bag but still so pretty. Their actual diaper bag(Kate) is way too big unless transatlantic travel with two littles is what you are doing that day (that was me on Monday and Tuesday this week).
Ok I'm done! You did not even ask for a soliloquy on bags when you have four kids but I guess I felt like spewing my thoughts regardless! ;)
I cloth diaper too! Though I haven't been brave enough to do it outside the home, and we used disposables when I was at my inlaws this week, as I didn't want to mess wish washing over the holidays (or figuring out their water hardness, washer settings, etc.). I am using a Fawn Design diaper bag which I love - I think I've gotten more compliments on it then most of my normal purses, and most people don't seem to realize it's a diaper bag. But if we were gone for a long day, I'm not sure it would be big enough for enough cloth while he's in the newborn stage and needing changes super often.

I haven't been out too much since giving birth, but so far I've mostly just thrown either my wallet and phone in a pocket of the diaper bag or thrown a wristlet in. So I'm not sure how much use I'll get out of my bags other than going to work - thus the need to purge and rotate bags more.

I am planning to rebuy a bag I sold a year ago. It's on a resale site now, but I'm trying to hold off purchasing until I've sold some more items. Hopefully it won't sell in the meantime. So I think I will amend my $500 budget for next year to $500 + selling proceeds.

Of course, it's also important to consider why something was purged in the first place and if that's still an issue so you don't end up selling again. I think my main problem was that I had too many bags and it just wasn't getting used. But I realized that I'd rather have that bag than a bunch of my other bags.

Yes, so no cleaning and purging your closets for the sake of doing it.

It may look good posting here that you've sold/donated/gifted massive amounts of items, but if you use them or enjoy them, there's no harm in keeping.

So if you think you may need it or use it, and you can easily keep it, that's ok!

Now if you want to clean out because you feel it's time to let go of things, it's different.

Enjoy your wonderful things, missie!
Don't let them go if it's not necessary!

Oh no!

What bag was it, if you don't mind sharing. What made you want it back over the ones you didn't sell initially?

It's the bag in my avatar, the Bottega Veneta Nuvolato Veneta, which was my HG back when I bought it. I didn't always use it a lot, but I've been using hobos more than I used to, and I'm not worrying as much about being super careful with bags. I had also been caught up in having a work bag that can fit everything, so that meant a lot of my bags weren't getting used. I've found that it works better for me to have a handbag plus a laptop bag, and then I can carry anything to work.

Also, if I'm getting down to a small number of bags, I definitely want to follow the spark joy model and this definitely does.

Yeah I don't like the everything in one for work. Laptops are heavy!

Hope you can find it again at a great price! It sounds like it sparks joy, especially if it's in your avatar!

This didn't seem like a lot to me. For example, I eliminated furs I don't wear and will upgrade to get the one that is a gap in my wardrobe - more joy and more utility. (DD scored one of the furs too. LOL! She's tiny at 5' to my 5'8" so I'll get it resized for her.) I wasn't wearing the sunnies I purged. I purged all my regular coats last year because they were too big and / or out of style, etc. and carefully I bought myself new ones I LOVE to wear. So this process is really just proper curating.

I've never missed anything I've ever gotten rid of - not clothes, not a kitchen appliance because I know how I live and I deliberate over the items on the bubble. You know it's taken me a year to decide if I want the patent Chanel. :whut: It may seem like overkill to dither over it so long (and I appreciate everyone's patience as I keep asking and talking about an item) but that process leads to zero regrets. My collections of everything have gotten smaller but much higher quality and interestingly much higher utility and variety so it's been a fun ride. I'm the opposite of a hoarder. I can't stand owning extra stuff.

And, nah, I generally don't care for costume jewelry. I don't like brooches, pins, big chunky necklaces, hair accessories, etc. Someone recently revealed some really cute pins on the Chanel thread. I almost thought about adding one to my collection because they were adorable but said NOPE! Sparkle that thing will gather dust in your closet. So, I kept my cultured pearl necklaces & earrings (I guess those are sorta real?), my Hermes Collier de Chien bracelet, some evening jewelry that would be 6 figures to do in gold & diamonds  and a few pair of interesting earrings. This purge put quite a few items on my fine jewelry to buy list. :graucho: But in the end, I'll have half the "junk" but an even more well rounded fine jewelry collection.

When you purge just start with the items you don't wear. Your clutches may be a good place. But, I'd love to spend a day with you in your closet with those blouses. I think you'd end up stabbing me as I tried to get some out of there.

I'll get started on construction of Phase II on the Pause Peninsula party crypts so you have your own space. We're doing ocean front crypts now. But you can bunk at my guest house till your space is done. LOL!

Is there some bag you know you've wanted for a while but haven't bought? Or is there a color gap that is driving you crazy because you want it but don't have it when you get dressed? I think a hard pause is good so you get "the" bag you will cherish enough that it's permanent collection worthy. Maybe you really need to go for that Kelly.

I hope you get the bag you love.

I'm the same on carrying two bags to work. I need a "real" bag and then a laptop bag.

When I go to lunch or out after work, I don't want to lug a laptop bag. I want the real bag that compliments my outfit. And, my laptop bags are never expensive so I can leave my real bag at home or locked in my office and take the laptop bag to external meetings and not have bag envy cause a problem with the cuckoo small minded people.
