l went through a lot of other categories in 2016 as well and tried to keep things to a bare minimum. Most are stripped to the most necessary; one category i find touch is scarves - we have four seasons so most are applicable either to keep warm or in the office. People also like to gift scarves to me and very few have hit the mark, but I feel bad for letting go? I know I shouldn't, but still... work in progress

After purging most of my closet and belongings, I have no issue letting it go, even gifts. I just wait awhile. Lol.

Hello everyone! Finally finished everyone's post so I felt it was my time to post...

I'd love to join you in the 2017 adventure ahead of us.

I'll try not to make a lengthy post...
I was a premier only kind of girl as soon as I got my first big girl job, but never one to pass up a bargain. As life evolved and I became a mother of three darling boys, my collection evolved to more contemporary for risk of damage reasons, and I kept most of my fave premieres I look at longingly.

2015 I purged 60% of my bags and "simplified". Slowly my collection has grown again as I found a new love for rehabbing vintage leathers.

I hope to reconnect with my real style this year and let go of those that do not fit my needs.

It will be tough, as I'm expecting little number 4 and bags are the only fun thing to shop for when preggers.

I will try the 15 in 31 for January - which will be tough to transfer that often as many days I am a bag lady with two bags, one for me and one for the kiddos.

Loved reading everyone's post and look forward to the coming year!

Thanks for all the feedback on white bags. I had a white bag and rarely wore it but I think it's because I didn't like the actual bag that much.

Liz, BigCherry & vink - maybe the way to go is as you said - something much less expensive so I don't worry about it.

Vink - you don't worry about color transfer on your Chanel?

I rarely wear jeans now and I find Xavier to be very easy to keep clean. ;)

I have an ivory Shiva flap which got color transfer from my old jeans. I used a light eraser to rub the stain off. It's fine now. I now know that I shouldn't pair jeans with any light colored bags. :)

At the beginning of 2016 we talked a bit about Marie Kondo's philosophy to only keep what brings joy. So with all of us trying to shop our closets and eliminate / avoid buying the handbags that don't truly work for us in 2017, I thought I'd bring her philosophy to the forefront again.

I'm jumping in.:panic: My bags & SLG's are already stripped to the bone so I needed to look at other areas. I took a deep breath, girded my loins and PURGED!

:shocked: <yikes!>

My results:
• Costume jewelry - I donated all but 6 statement items and a faux pearl set (I don't like pearls but the look works for some outfits)
• Fine Jewelry - I gave several items I got in my 20's to DD. She said it was Christmas part 2. :nuts:
• Furs - Selling 3 of 6. :crybaby:I need Valium. LOL! But, I just don't wear those 3. I can just buy the one additional fur and fur trimmed cape I do want and call it a day.
• Scarves - all donated. I hate scarves. I just felt I "should" have them. I may add a special Chanel or Hermes scarf one day.
• Sunglasses - Selling 3 of 10 pair.
• Purse charms - All donated. They aren't worth the effort to sell and as much as I'm a big kid, I hate junk / toys on my bags. I tried to pawn them off on DD and she looked at me like I was nuts. :lol:
• Coats - all ok as I purged them last year.
• Misc - I donated extra gloves, umbrellas, hats, etc. If I hadn't used it in the last 12 months it was out.

So that's my initial Kondo purge. I feel better already! :yahoo: Now I need to do my clothes (Stylebook will help) and shoes (have to wait til my foot is healed)

Anyone else up to the challenge? :smile:
I'm doing this as well.

@Sparkletastic I already did a Marie Kondo purge in 2016; and yes it felt liberating! I will join you though, in a commitment to look at my possessions with a critical eye, and not buy things that essentially replace what was purged. I am also committed to continue to cull my collection and possessions.

For me it does not always work to only buy things that I love or "spark joy", as I can fairly easily find things that fit into this category.[emoji3]

The hardest thing for me to resist are discounted, designer finds. Like an addict, it is best for me to avoid shopping online at times when there are major discounts and at places like NR, unless I have a specific item to buy, and do not stray from my "list". My past sins were often fantastic bargains/impulse buys, that were rarely worn or used.

@SuzieSueSure welcome to our group!

Welcome SuzieSueSure! Congratulations on #4! I'm also a mom of 4, one still in diapers so I feel ya on the mom bag + own bag dichotomy. However, I find when the kids are with me I can leave their 'supply bag' in the car and take a mini crossbody with essentials in for errands. Of course with a newborn you need everything all the time. Jujube diaper bags are incredible with insane resale value, just saying. I have a be right back backpack style one in black nylon with gold hardware that looks very grown up, but their tokidoki and hello kitty prints are super popular. The bff is probably the most popular (messenger/backpack convertible), and they can all be thrown in the wash. Very handy when carting poppy cloth diapers home (if you are into that). That said, I only carry MY bag now that my baby is out of the explosive poop stage and just have certain criteria for the size shape and structure of my own bag such that it works hands free and I can get a diaper out with one hand, etc. Exterior pockets for two sippy cups is a big plus for me these days and harder to find in a pretty leather purse that I consider one of MY bags, but not impossible! One brand i like with multiple exterior pockets for water bottles and sippys is mz wallace and it's lighter than an all leather bag but still so pretty. Their actual diaper bag(Kate) is way too big unless transatlantic travel with two littles is what you are doing that day (that was me on Monday and Tuesday this week).
Ok I'm done! You did not even ask for a soliloquy on bags when you have four kids but I guess I felt like spewing my thoughts regardless! ;)

My current collection -> my goal (in brackets what I really need/use)
10 -> 7 (4) SLGs
3 -> 0 small bags
11 -> 5 (2) work bags/medium-sized bags
5 -> 2 (1) laptop bags
5 -> 2 (1) leisure bags (after work bags)
2 -> 1 (0) summer bags
2 -> 0 travel bags
5 -> 1 (1) evening bags
3 -> 1 (1) gym bags

Most of the surplus purchases happened when I tried to search a perfect work bag in black. I found many perfect bag models but they weren't available in black so I bought in other neutral colours. :/ With a realistic approach, I don't believe I could get all surplus bags sold during next year but will see. If I succeed, I can use the money for ordering a custom made work bag which will cost around $800 and I need get used to the habit of not buying new bags every year. If I get bored, the used custom made bag will sell for $30-50 which is not wise at all.

Total ban would not work for me. This will only increase the change of craving even more bags. When I slip, I end up buying even more. I would rather allow myself to buy one bag in a whole year so I have to choose wisely.

My bag collection is not a real issue yet but my wardrobe has became hard to manage (along with the makeup, accessory, jewellery & shoes collection). I just realized I've makeup for entire next year supply. Downsizing rate for these categories will be around -90% but that's off topic. :p

Is there another thread where I can find very mean people who can make you feel very bad if you slip from your goal? :idea:

Welcome aboard! We're glad you're here.

Your life is changing so it's to be expected that your bag collection is in flux. Go slowly wth any purging. A bag that seems like it won't fit your lifestyle now could be perfect when your kids are older. But whatever you do, we'll be here for you!

Great analysis, ipsum!!

And I agree on total ban not being an option for me. It doesn't fit my goals. There are bags I've identified that I do need. So, if they go on sale or rarer ones come up preloved, I go for it. I control myself by staying to my list. So perhaps we are more focused on the very disciplined and thoughtful buying. Do you know what one bag you want. Having an idea of what you want will help you push past the opportunity bags.

Join me in the party crypt on Pause Peninsula! We'll help you really analyze your purchases to see if you should make them. Just be sure to tell us before you buy. I'm still trying to make sure I remember that step. LOL! And if you want us to be mean I guess we could always slap you with a very tiny, soft mini bag. :bagslap:

But we'll still hug you after. :hugs:

Yes, yes, yes!! to the bolded. LOL!!! I can't use the sparks joy rule for purchases. :lol: Lots of things could spark joy. I HAVE to stick to my list which I have for handbags, jewelry and clothes.

But the sparks joy rule works for my current items. I'm still purging from the past few years. I always had to wear dour suits to work. When I changed in my career and gained the option to dress more creatively, I went cuckoo. Lots of sale items that aren't really me. Multiples of items. Outfits for activities I don't do. (Ugh!) I don't have extra in anything other than clothes and shoes anymore. I want the clothes purging done in the next 6 months. I just wish I knew of a good consignment shop. No way I'm taking the time to sell a bunch of clothing items on eBay.

Spark,

Your scaring me here with the sheer volume that you purged. I am up for the challenge but it will definitely be on a smaller scale. The problem is I think I may be a small hoarder. The first step I will do is go thru my clutches and see what can leave. I may need to call in reinforcements to force me to part with a few things.

I know DD was glad to get her hands on your jewelry. What statement pieces of costume did you keep? I have to remind myself that they aren't real jewelry and it's not ok to pay close to a grand for it.

We can be very discouraging on new purchases!! Haha.

But at least you know a total ban isn't you. It isn't me either.

One bag for 2017 is a wise goal, as it can help you focus on letting go of your surplus and really figure out what is needed in your closet collection.

Come join us in the money talks forum, in cleaning out the closet. It really encouraged me to focus on my preferences and lifestyle and helped me learn to let go when I did my Marie Kondo clean out. [emoji4]

My only advice to those cleaning out for 2017:

Never get rid of something you'll regret getting rid of. You don't want to spend twice to rebuy something(s).

I did that with a few types of shoes lol.

But the effort of finding yourself and cleaning out is therapeutic and rewarding. Good luck to those beginning their journey!

Merry Christmas!

Anyone else thinking total 2017 ban island? I really feel like I'm a bit out of control and need to pause and shop my closet for as long as possible..... In December I bought a used (pristine) bag I had wanted for 6 months (an mz wallace) a carefree bag (lauren by Ralph Lauren double zip satchel from tjmaxx), a used tiny purse (little mz wallace sophie crossbody), and 2 custom (etsy & massaccesi) bags I ordered arrived and now I'm feeling overwhelmed by my acquisitions!!! I no longer can say I do not have totes/satchels that work for my grad school mom of 4 lifestyle ; I now have six that can get me through the day. I have no excuse to buy anything anymore except just lusting for new colors.
HBG,

Kudos for accessing your bag needs and decideding to go on ban island. As we are all bag obsessed it's a very hard thing to do. I only go on pause pennisula because I don't ever see my collection being done.
Do you consider your collection totally done or just done for upcoming year
