1 carat diamond ring or Hermes bag?

"Best" is certainly a subjective term and in a lot of circles, Tiffany isn't a brand that qualifies. That's not just my opinion -- it's substantiated by tons of press about Tiffany having a crisis because its brand has frankly lost its luster. So I'm not sure how declaring one's own possessions "the best" is an argument. If you like Tiffany, you like Tiffany, but "Why get good when you can get the best?" I don't know about making a statement like that. But to each her own.

I agree with all of this.

And as far as diamonds do, a rock is a rock. a 1ct F/VS1 purchased from some no name local seller is better quality than a 1ct G/SI1, no matter what name you put on it. (Just using the stats for example)

I love Tiffany for their classic styles, customer service, selection and quite honestly, the rush of opening the little blue box. But to delcare them the 'best' in jewelry is really just a matter of opinion.

^^^ again if you guys read my post i said it all depends on what you as an individual are into. I personally am not a Harry Winston fan, not because of the quality - but just because that is not where I am in life!!! Maybe when I am older, but it just does not fit my personality, right now! I mean, it may fit yours and all the power to you! But for ME the best is tiffany's! Love their designs, quality, customer service and the mini thrill i get in the pit of my stomach whenever i look down and see the sparkles!

But then again, I get what I can afford and would never ever go into debt for a piece of jewelry! That's just not worth it!!! My e-ring, all my pieces and everything that was given to me were all paid with cash - well debit cards lol! A long standing rule in my family is that if you can't pay for it in cash, you probably shouldn't be buying it in the first place! lol! I know we are weird.

But I think this issue is getting out of hand, we have to realize that people have different views and some people may love tiffanys and some may love cartier -- we shouldn't try to persuade them other wise. Let them get what they want, not what we want for them! Just like i would never try to get my cousin from wearing fake hand bags, i would never push my unwanted opinions on others!!

If she was deciding between a tiffany's ring and a no name brand ring - that would be a different story! THen it is an open discussion!! But right now she is giving us TWO choices...not an open forum to bash those choices!

I think the point some of us were trying to make is not an antagonistic one, but a helpful one-- if it's the *one carat* part of the equation that's most important to her, she could get a nicer stone for the money going outside Tiffany for the rock itself, and then perhaps have it set Tiffany-style in a simple setting. My stones have come from dealers, after looking at places like Tiffany and Cartier. While looking at those places was a great time, I could get much better product in my budget from a dealer.

I and others have said that if the Tiffany part of the equation is what matters most to her-- then great, she should go for it. There are some great settings and artists there and there is some incredible charm to the Blue Box.

In my own personal decision-making process, though, it's the diamond that's forever, not the brand, so I want the best possible, most perfect stone my money can buy, kwim?

Mania - Love your last sentence, feel the same way.

Don't mean to throw a wet rag on this but I hang on the money thread too much-

Do you have 2 years worth of expenses saved?

How about your retirement account?

Disability insurance?

I would make sure I could get the Birkin of my choice. If getting the Birkin that I really, really want is easily available (*because I don't think you should settle on a piece like that), I would do the Birkin. Not very many people have authentic ones and I think a Tiffany 1-carat ring is more common.

If the Tiffany ring is a specific ring to Tiffany, like the Lucida or the Etoile (which is the only round diamond e-ring I looooove) then that makes it a harder choice. I still think it's a lot easier to buy a ring from Tiffany than it is to purchase a Birkin.

Little Blue Box aside, one of my favorite serious jewelers is based out of New Orleans: Adler's. OMFG, the pieces there are aaaaaamazing. They were the reason why my parents loved visiting me when I lived down there, and my dad will still go down there to pick up pieces. The best part is that they will negotiate, especially if you can pay in cash. If you're from out of state, they'll work it out so you don't have to pay sales tax (and on a rock, that's a lot of savings). Maybe you can get both!

oh did realise this was causing a storm....but l have to stll say unless this is an e-ring and it has to be tiffany then l would go for the bag.....my sister wanted a tiffany, e-ring..after a lot of debate with DF, they found a jeweller who made the rings by hand, he made a ring 6 prong l think 2 carats, you would not know is was not tiffany...unless you knew her, or she showed a receipt......they also had a carribean holiday as well and still less than the price of a 2 c tiffany....but OP at the end of the day its what you are going to be happy with..good luck, let us know your choice :)

Personally I think there is a difference when it comes to diamonds. A certified 1 carat ideal-cut G color VS1 diamond is precisely the same, whether you buy it at Tiffany or from Cartier or from a dealer. The diamond itself doesn't change, it's just more expensive at Tiffany than it is from a dealer or small jeweler. So it's not really a Guess vs. Chanel argument. And it's not really a knock-off argument, either. A diamond's a diamond, if it's certified and/or you get it from someone reputable.

Now when it comes to the setting designs. . . you can totally argue that the only true *tiffany* setting is a Tiffany setting, sure. Or that specific, Tiffany-patented designs are the prettiest or best done or highest quality, in your opinion. Or that others knock off Tiffany all the time. But the stone, which is the most expensive piece of this equation, is the same as another stone, no matter where you procure it.

An Hermès Birkin is unique. Just as some of the settings at Tiffany are unique. But Tiffany's rightful claim to fame comes from its artists, like Jean Schlumberger (especially. LOVE.) and others. Not from its stones, aside from the rightfully famous Tiffany Diamond. Its stones are very nice-- high quality and well cut-- but not unique or special in the world of diamonds. Just pricier than they need be, IMO.

Look, I have no problem with wanting Tiffany, if it's your grail. And I love diamonds. It's just that if I had the money to spend on a Tiffany 1-carat stone of the color and cut and clarity that I'd want, I would go elsewhere and get more and bigger! And right now, I am more intrigued by H than I am T.
:smile1:

Exactly! Thats my train of thought and the reason I said get a non-Tiffany stone & have $$ left for H.

I say go with the ring because it will go with everything, while the Birkin would only go with certain outfits/colors depending on what you get.

Other than that, I'm sick over the investment options. Overpriced designer good #1 or overprice designer good #2. At least the Birkin would be a recognizable item. The ring may as well be from Kay Jewelers for all anyone else would know. I second the opinions that a diamond of equal quality can be had elsewhere for much less.

I'm now thinking the Hermes. But I thought you would wear diamond everyday and not the Birkin everyday. Does anyone know if she sold one of these two choices in 5 years, which would get more $$?
