1 carat diamond ring or Hermes bag?

I can't believe how many people are down talking Tiffany.. Sure, a Hermes bag is great and all and hopefully one day I'll have one, but to sit here and say that Tiffany is all about marketing and is just a run of the mill product that you can get anywhere is absolutely false. They are BOTH status symbols no matter which way you look at it.

Depends on if this is an upgrade or not (I don't believe in upgrading engagement rings), but I'd choose the ring over the bag. Just my opinion and not trying to rain on anyone else's parade. ;)

Unless the diamond market changes and the demand for Hermes changes, I'd bet a Birkin would resell for much more than a 1ct diamond.

You couldn't get 25% of the price you paid for the 1 carat diamond back, no matter where you bought it. Tiffany's upgrade policy is stiff as well: you must spend two times as much on the next diamond to upgrade at all. The Birkin will maintain its value much better.

Hermes! I know that's sacrilege to my fellow diamond lovers but that thing is gonna be worth far more in the future.

Is it true that Hermes worth more? If I were to spend a bomb on an item, I would definitely hope to pass down one that retains value to my children.

That's apples to oranges. Hermes is one brand that is not just all marketing. Hermes bags are made by hand, by one individual, of extremely high quality materials. They retain their value. They have a lifetime guarantee. If your bag requires repairs, it goes to the same craftsperson who made it in the first place (they do keep track of who created each bag). I do not know of any other companies who can make this claim.

Tiffany diamonds are mass mined and purchased and are not any more "rare" than any other diamond from any other source. You can easily get the same quality diamond because Tiffany does not have a monopoly of acquiring higher quality diamonds over other sources that sell diamonds.

Thank you! This is helpful.

I vote for Hermes! IMO, if you buy Tiffanys, you are not buying a 'tiffany diamond' their diamonds are not a higher quality than those you find in other stores. From what I remember, the diamonds which Tiffany uses are Lazare diamonds which are all ideal cut; this doesn't mean that you can't get yourself a Lazare diamond anywhere else, Lazare diamonds are not exclusive to Tiffany.
So as for the extra thousands you are paying, is really for the name (which IMO is not quite 'up there' to van cleep, cartier, HW)
As for value, diamonds that are 1ct really don't have much movement up or down. Maybe if you go 2ct + is when you really start to see movement in value. (not sure, but on an appraisal, I don't think a 'Tiffany' ring would be worth more than other diamonds, if so, it would be the platinum setting that's worth a little more..)
Lastly, some people put into factor 'snob appeal' (honeslty, don't we all buy designer stuff for a little bit of this?) Birkin is a classic style that 'seperates' you from the everyday LV,Gucci (of which i love too, but Hermes is just at another level) but even to a trained eye, a Tiffany 1ct just doesn't do it. That said, it really depends if you care what people think when you carry your 'goodies'.

sorry for rambling on.. just my opinion! :wlae:

This is great information too. ;)

Depends on what you want most and what you already have.

However, it's much harder/annoying to get the Birkin of your preferred specifications than a 1 carat Tiffany diamond.

There are Birkins sitting on shelves in this economy, but the chances of finding a Birkin of your preferred leather, hardware, color, size, etc. on the shelf and free to purchase without politics are far lower than getting a 1 carat Tiffany diamond.

If you got the money ready, a 1 carat Tiffany diamond is instantly accessible. A Birkin of your choice isn't.

This is one of my considerations too. How long do I have to wait for my Birkin? 1 year? 2 years?

It depends where you are in the world, some birkins are found on the shelf, in some countries you have to order it and wait for it to arrive, it can take anywhere from 1 week to 1 year.

True. You may find a birkin on the shelf for you to purchase, Chel.

But that said, most Hermes buyers don't buy birkin/kelly just because it's value for money. Most H buyers don't immediately go crazy the moment they saw a birkin on the shelf.

After you learn more about Hermes leathers, history and the various colors that one can build up a collection on, you'll love Hermes more. This is when one choose the color and leather that she desired and order and then, wait for it. The process of selecting the leather, color, sizes and waiting are far more breath-taking than buying the birkin immediately from the shelf.

Btw, I'm an avid fan of Tiffany too. Get the Hermes, Chel.:p

oh my thats hard...as i LOVE hermes but im also a jeweler and i got my first 1 carat solitair for valentines day, simple set in yellow gold...hmmmmm...id say ring since its on your hand and you can wear it every day...just my opinion lol and gold prices are sky rocketing so it def. a great life long investment!

Is it the diamond you want or "Tiffany". If you like to have a diamond ring, I think you can find much cheaper one at other jew seller. Then you can add some $ and get the Hermes. Now you have both.:yahoo:
I always wanted a Cartier engagement ring, and I finally got a much nicer one from HongKong at much less $.
