1 carat diamond ring or Hermes bag?

Correct me if I am wrong... wouldn't Hermes be all about marketing as well? Because there are many brands that make good bags?
I don't think Hermes is about marketing at all. I wached a special about the design and workmanship that goes into each and every single bag that they create. It is phenominal. Every stitch is by hand, not a machine or mass produced, every single piece of leather for every side of the bag is hand selected for quality, and taken from specific areas of the croc, for example. Hermes got it's status from quality IMO, not the universal "little blue box" I would def choose the Hermes. Now, if I saw the inside workings of Tiffany, I might have a diff opinion. But as far as I know, a diamond is a diamond is a diamond. Just my 2 cents.

oh my thats hard...as i LOVE hermes but im also a jeweler and i got my first 1 carat solitair for valentines day, simple set in yellow gold...hmmmmm...id say ring since its on your hand and you can wear it every day...just my opinion lol and gold prices are sky rocketing so it def. a great life long investment!

What do gold prices have to do with diamond prices?

I would and have chosen Hermes over diamonds and never regretted that choice. But I also have jewelry that I already love and only wear simple pieces. It's really based on your own personal style. Do you want a piece of jewelry you wear everyday or a bag you wear everyday? I would also try to find the diamond elsewhere because you can find a better value on a diamond outside of Tiffany's. And if you save on that, that brings you closer to a birkin hehehe.

I can't believe how many people are down talking Tiffany.. Sure, a Hermes bag is great and all and hopefully one day I'll have one, but to sit here and say that Tiffany is all about marketing and is just a run of the mill product that you can get anywhere is absolutely false. They are BOTH status symbols no matter which way you look at it.

I was going to stay out of this...but i love this post and it's so true. never understood this!!!

Not true, precisely.

Both rely on a marketing mystique, certainly, but Tiffany spends a lot more on mass-market advertising than does Hermès. And the Hermès mystique owes a lot to the hand-crafted nature of the products. Hand-rolled edges on scarves. Hand-stitching and shaping on the leather goods.

For someone like me, who is very interested in the small-craftsman *movement,* this is very important. I buy local produce, dairy and meat, and try to buy local and handmade crafts and gifts when I can. Handcrafting of anything is increasingly a lost art and I can understand the cost when you consider the care and man-hours that go into the making of the bags.

And believe me, this is not coming from someone who can afford Hermes leather goods. I have a small (small!) fund I hope to apply to an Hermès bag (one!) someday. But even being a fan from afar, as it were, my perception is that an Hermès bag is a one-of-a-kind original with the stamp of a craftsman on it, rather than a diamond among similar diamonds.

As I have said before, if the Tiffany brand works for you, by all means go for it! It's a wonderful brand, with some lovely jewlery. IMO, however, this particular question is an apples-to-oranges comparison. The question wasn't, "which gorgeous ring should I pick from Tiffany?" or "should I get a diamond or a handbag?" It was Tiffany vs. Hermès, and for some of us, the monetary and aesthetic values of the Hermès bag are greater.

I truely respect your opinions, and loved the way you wrote your post. I am excited for you that the craftmanship of Hermes excites you, and I too some day will own a Hermes bag. I would never discourage someone for following their bright orange dreams!!

I do think that both products are alike and both companies have different marketing strategies that work for them, but I think that has more to do to their target client vs. more mainstream or not. I don't think it would be beneficial or wise to put a hermes ad in teen magazine.....but then again you see product placements in all major films for both products and on major stars arms lol. But then again, it's just how you view things :)

The only thing that upsets me is when posters directly tell others that buying Tiffany's is a waste of money, that it's all about marketing, that you can get a replica tiffanys ring any where (this one really freaks me out, because if we all agree it is wrong to buy an inspired/replica bag because the designers worked hard for those designs, etc etc...but why buying fake jewelry ok? I mean yeah if it is just a diamond on a plain band ok -- but researching it so the prongs and everything resemble tiffanys? well in my book that's just a fake, a good fake...but a fake. because when it comes down to it - some of the GOOD fake handbags are made out of leather and fine materials -- but they are still FAKE!!! hehe)))

But again, too each it's own. When I'm older I will own a birkin bag, but right now i'm loving my Tiffany's :)

I don't think most people were syaing that buying Tiffany is a waste of money. We'd probably all be hypocrites, then.

The point some (like me) were making is that a diamond branded by Tiffany is not worth any more than any other diamond of the same grade. As was stated earlier, a diamond is a diamond is a diamond so if one is buying it for the sake of it being just a diamond, then where it comes from makes no difference and thus a Tiffany rock is not worth the extra money. If one is buying because they have an affinity for Tiffany, so be it. In that case, the price is a nonissue.

It's not a slam on Tiffany to point out that a 1ct G/VS1/Ideal is going to be the same thing no matter where it's sold.

I'd go for the rock. I still believe that diamonds can be passed down as family heirlooms and as the saying goes "Diamonds are forever". My grandchildren can also reset the diamonds in any settings they want but that's gonna be the same diamond which I've passed it down. As for a H bag, I feel that it may not be able to last as long, it's leather afterall and prone to wear and tear. So my question is how do you deal with an old tattered H bag passed down by your great great grandgranny??

slip has an excellent point. I always think of my daughter inheriting my expensive things. She could definitely do more with the diamond than the bag. But you have to think how important that fact and sentiment is in making the decision. If you're so in love with the Hermes and can't think of anyting else and aren't interested in long-term, definitely go with the Hermes. Otherwise, if you are like me, you will get the diamond and then the Hermes cause you can't get it out of your mind!

That's what I'm hoping to do....first on my heirloom list is a huge rock which can be passed to my daughter, daughter's daughter and so on. Next shall be Hermes.:p
