Ten Things I Wish I Could Tell the Nordstrom Buying Team As Another Anniversary Sale Is Underway

1. Too much trend; not enough classic- help women build a year-round wardrobe by offering good quality lighter wool gabardine separates in a variety of solid colors - navy, black, grey, camel, hunter, burgundy- and offer new coordinating pieces at each AS. Each year design silk blouses with 3-4 of the gabardine colors in a pattern that can be worn with all the separates.

2. Accessories are the key- the assortment of scarves has *really* gone downhill. Each year there should be a fabulous "it" scarf in at least three color-ways of luxurious silk or wool or silk/wool/cashmere. This should be a $300 scarf that has everyone drooling. Why not offer one or two really fabulous and unique French scarves (online only), such as from Wolff et Descourtis? Or what about teaming up with Diwali to bring in their cheap and cheerful wool and silk scarves?

3. Same comment as #2 but as applied to a wrap or poncho. What happened to the beautiful tissue thin pashminas for travel? Offer a fabulous exclusive Max Mara or St. John or Lori Piana cashmere poncho.

4. Fashion jewelry at Nordstrom has become a fashion bust. There should be offerings of statement necklaces, both chunky and skinny bracelets, daytime gold and silver tone earrings, a terrific must-have brooch (think Chanel eye knockoff). This year crushed velvet is everywhere- but there are virtually no offerings incorporating this theme in fashion jewelry. Offer an exclusive Barrera or Ben-Amun or Ciner piece- one just for each Anniversary Sale that women can collect year after year. Work with overseas fashion jewelry companies (for example, Cécile et Jeanne or even something special and upscale like Madame et Son Bouledogue) and have limited edition special offerings.

5. Fine jewelry- offer BL custom design with delivery 4-6 weeks after the AS. Trunk shows are nice- custom design is nicer. Rumor has it this is the last year for the skinny bangle during the AS- huge mistake. Where are pearls? Why not an exclusive Yurman piece for the AS?

6. Handbags have become a snore- where are the lush, fabulous Chloe bags, or Burberry, 3.1 Philip Lim, or Alexander Wang for AS? The year's offerings are really sub-par. No exciting wallets. Saw no real daytime portfolios or evening clutches. Where's the fabulous buttery leather? Up the game by mixing up the brands (Jerome Dreyfuss, Céline, etc.). The Le Pliage expandable tote is great, but why not tie in to the Longchamp custom Pliage option? Speaking of snore, Nordstrom seems tired- gone are the excitement and beautiful decorations. The stores need sprucing up to create a visual experience.

7. Beauty- this department should be "points plus"- you get the normal reward points but also have a card that keeps track of beauty purchases. When you spend $2k (for example) give the customer a fabulous gift like a Dyson hairdryer or a La Mer gift set. And then start a contest called "The Find" where customers (who really do travel the world) turn Nordstrom on to unique beauty products they discover overseas. Choose five winners and shower them with gifts or give away a trip. For the AS offer custom engraving of lipstick tubes/compacts or a fabulous powder "pouf" (think Caron Paris swan down powder puff).

8. Import a custom Kusmi tea and a custom Ladurée macaroon and set up stands in the larger stores (home dept??) selling these just during the sale weeks, Valentine's Day and Xmas. Or really do something special and bring in Angelina hot chocolate mix and Jacques Genin caramels. Speaking of the home department, let customers design a day planner with choice of Kate Spade covers and customized inserts (customer gets a checklist of options-- day per page, or week per two pages, address book option, to do list options, etc). Nordstrom builds the day planner based on what's checked and customer can pick it up within a week.

9. Keep customers in the store and shopping by offering them a free lunch in the cafe with a $500 total in same day store purchases. Why let people leave the store for lunch when they can eat and then shop some more? Or offer them a coffee and cake break.

10. Shoes- offer a storage solution (team up with the Container Store or California Closets) so women don't have to worry about where to put those 5-10 new pair of shoes they buy during the AS. Are there shoes only available on-line? Keep a sample in the stores so customers can see them in person and then order while in the store. For shoes over $300 offer a certificate for a free resoling/ shoe repair.

My two cents- not worth even that.

Yes to all of this!

I feel a little behind the curve when I see the nice things the other posters get. I've been a surgeon for 40 years so never had a life outside the hospital and raising four boys. We do go to a black tie functions for my husband's job every once in a while and I have Jenny Packham dresses/gowns for those but I need to get some "style" since since I think I am going to retire end of the year. I honestly need a stylist! We used to travel more but I got grounded after an accident and resulting ACDF. Perhaps once I retire we will get out more. When I walk home from work I see beautifully dressed women and am a bit envious. It just never worked with my job and motherhood.
Isn't it interesting the different paths our lives take us on? I was a stay at home, homeschool mom until 2014 when our youngest daughter graduated. She's now a college senior, other, older daughter graduated college last year. Our son goes to public school and is a HS senior. Anyway, my daughters are very interested in fashion and that is how I became more fashion savvy. The youngest is actually going to school to be a merchandiser/buyer and she has a real eye. I don't know what I'll do when she leaves home! Westie Lover, Nordies has wonderful SAs. Find one whose style you like and work with her. You don't need a bunch of clothing, but figuring out what works for you and is flattering is important. The trick is to find someone who will be honest and not just try to sell you stuff.

I really wish Nordstrom would do a survey with some of us who have been level 4 customers for ages and ask what we would like to see. You are right, the sale could encompass a lot more special experiences. The offerings in some departments are really lacking. Designer shoes and bag departments should be able to offer something to customers! Maybe a trunk show event, special color, limited edition something.

Just the absolute worst personal stylist experience!! I've had this appointment set up for over a week and I am looking for a business formal wardrobe for my new job. I couldn't have been more clear in my email about what I was looking for and my budget! I even included a list and the first item was 2 complete suits.

The stylist pulled jeans and leather jackets and sneakers. She didn't have a single complete suit in there. Everything was about 2x the price point I would have been comfortable with. I wanted black pumps and it was the one item I really wanted to splurge on - she had Sam Edelman pumps in there.
And almost everything was the wrong size. She said the store was sold out in my size - which is totally fine and understandable - but why didn't they tell me?!?! I would have shopped early online in that case.

I'm so upset. This is literally the worst experience at Nordstrom. The manager came out and apologized and offered me lunch (which was very nice) but didn't solve my problem. I have three meetings for my new job this week and I have no idea what I'm going to wear!

I think the most frustrating part of this is I'm convinced no one read the email. They keep saying they did but it doesn't make any sense how they could have such a blunder if they did.
They offered to set me up with a new stylist in POV but I didn't understand how that would help. If the store is out of my sizes and their best stylist couldn't find it, why would another stylist help.

So disappointing and frustrating!!
That is horrible. I would have been livid. I'm so sorry. I can't believe they couldn't pull some things together for you once they realized how off track they were.

Regarding Longchamp, as much as I like the classics that they offer, it would be a nice option to have the other styles, as well. And make those Made in France, too.

The Longchamp one I was interested in this year (the expandable version) is something I already have (wanted one as backup; I really love it). And it's sold out. Maybe one will pop back later (hopefully at a lower price).

Living vicariously through you ladies. Had a major financial emergency and it wiped my Nordstrom wishlist to dust. I'm heartbroken because I've had a really rough year and just wanted to treat myself a little, but everything happens for a reason I guess. Enjoy the rest of the sale ladies and I hope you get all on your list.-XOXO
Sorry to hear that, hope everything is back on track.

What a disaster! I used to have such a positive experience with Personal Shoppers years ago when I lived in Salt Lake City and shopped at the downtown Nordstrom, but since moving to the Bay Area I've been really disappointed in all my PS experiences. They don't listen, they don't follow up, and they pick really age-inappropriate clothes which they then try to convince me look "suuuuuper cuuuuuute." (ugh.)
I don't know if all retail has gone downhill or just Nordstrom, but in-store shopping just doesn't seem to be the way it used to be. Or maybe I'm getting old and grumpy? :whut:
No, Elaine, you just want your SA to listen to you and offer valid suggestions. That isn't too much to ask. The age appropriate question can be tricky. I'm always asking my daughters if items I like are appropriate. They both have a good eye for fashion and are quite honest with me.

I love my SA. She doesn't reach out a ton but I'm okay with that. Her suggestions are good and she's a delight to spend time with. There's another gal who is also great fun but quite good to work with when I happen to stop in Nordies and my SA isn't working.

Aw, Mrs. Bagalot, I'm sorry. I hope it all works out in the end and that your health stays good. Hugs to you!

If they'd set up a little Angelina's cafe and make cups of Cafe l'Africain I'd set up a cot in the corner and stay for the duration of the sale. LOL!

I'm sorry this happened. Hope things are looking up for you soon.

Keep checking on the Blush Nikes! They keep replenishing sizes - a few at a time - I'm guessing according to what Nike can send them. Originally, I had a backorder date of December, then it moved to October - then all of a sudden shipped 2 days ago. I still check periodically for DIL, and sizes pop up. I don't think they're returns this early, more like if they get a shipment of 8's - or 5's etc, they put them on the website.

I hope mine ship sooner than backorder date too!

I think the UPS guys will be very busy in the coming days as all of our orders start arriving! I have been super busy. Even the items I bought at the pre-sale shopping day on Wednesday haven't been decided on and put away. I've ordered more things and am unsure about some sizes so I've just put it all in our front closet for now and will probably wait and make final decisions once most my orders have arrived.
