Hi. I'm into this conversation a bit late.
I started collecting scarves because I let a very limited scarf go unpurchased. We were aboard the Queen Mary 2 and they were selling En Avante Toute in the Hermès boutique on the ship.
I didn't buy it. I thought it was too much money.
The next trip no En Avante Toute. I bought some stupid consolation prize.
We scoured eBay for years and finally found one. Then a few years after that, H reissued it without the QM2 on the stack. Just not the same and boring colorways.
We found one again on eBay later in a different colorway. So, we did get what we wanted, at quite the premium.
When I was collecting, designs would hit me. And, I enjoyed catching special editions when I heard about them.
I abruptly stopped buying anything after the crazy stupid silk price increases when 90s shot up from $375 to well over $400. This was years ago. It looks like prices have come back to sanity.
But for another QM2 colorway...

I'll echo othersthat's a great question. While the answers might or might not align with a "grail" scarf, I'd throw out that almost anything designed by Clerc is iconic. Less so, perhaps, for designs by Dumas, but it can occasionally be the same.
A grail hits the heart with unwavering directness. Like Pirula, many of my grails are India themed (and like Pirula, because of my time living there). I'll post one . . . Chale Damier from the 2008 collection. I waited to find this for seven years and received it just a couple weeks ago finally.
This should be an interesting discussion. Different people will have very different reasons, which I'm intrigued to hear. My grails have nothing to to with the classic iconic patterns because I was very surprised to learn I don't gravitate toward them. Year of India scarves are grails for me because I lived there for a couple of years and because what a year of beauty it was! But I don't love them all, so they're not all grails for me.
Really looking forward to this discussion. What makes a grail for you texasgirligirl?
This is, indeed, an interesting discussion. [BTW, I'm so jealous that you lived in India...it has been on my bucket list of places to visit for sooooo long but life always ends up taking me somewhere else LOL]. The India-themed scarves are almost all lovely so you have a great list of grails to choose from!!
I am a bit eclectic in my tastes but if I had to pick one "theme" that I gravitate towards most it would be anything Oriental [both in the modern meaning i.e. Far East and the traditional meaning i.e. Near East]. I have three already that fit into that broad category [Jonques et Sampans, Tapis Persans, and Chevaux Arabes] but most of my grails also fall into the theme as well.
Of course, C'est la Fete is an exception but one that [as the lovely PBP says below] "melts my heart"!
I agree that Ex Libris is quintessential Hermes!! I've yet to buy any Ex Libris scarves but I do have a Mosaique au 24 ashtray that I use daily. It really is one if their most recognizable symbols.
Interesting to read how you're connected to Indian-themed scarves. We're in the process of moving to India, and I've been to India a few times before. I'm fairly new to H so I only learned about the year of India not too long ago. I was so glad to find that there's a thread dedicated to the year of India, which helped me a lot. And of course I fell in love with quite a few of them, just like how I fell deeply in love with India. And I realized that my first CSGM Aux Portes du Palais is a reissued from that year. How it's meant to be! So far I've purchased all my scarves from the boutique (got the marwari dip dye as well) but I'm slowly learning and venturing out to hopefully get more from that year. I'm not that into classic iconic scarves but more into those speak to me and connect to me with my personal experiences. I actually prefer it to be less "iconic" if possible.
I love big cat themed as well, so it's kept me quite busy.
Please do visit India someday! You will love it!
Hm. Marietouchet mentioned that we might be able to tempt her into sharing some of her HS in this thread....
I would love to see shots of Venezia CSGM, if Marietouchet or anyone else has this shawl. It is my absolute HG of all HGs. I have 5 or 6 CWs of Carnaval de Venise aka Fetes Venitiennes in 90 jacquards, but the shawl has an extra border and looks just amazing in the few pix I've seen of it.

DYING!!!! So gorgeous. Lucky you! There are not even many pix on the web for me to drool over. Anthracite! Is there *also* a black? Thanks so much.
