What’s your unpopular Hermes opinion?

My UO is that if cashmere is not from the UK, specifically Scotland, it is not of such great quality. The H sweaters (of which I have five or six) remain gorgeous after many wears and they are made in the UK. I promise that the fact that I am originally from Scotland/England is not a factor in my opinion.
Those of us with roots in Mongolia might differ with you ;)

My UO today is that people believe too much that they read online about Hermès. We have all these declarative statements being made (like "spend money in Paris and you'll get a lottery appointment, I know this for a fact") when really no one (or almost no one) actually knows this stuff for a fact.

Second UO: Sometimes people are literally making this stuff up. I remember someone posting that they were at FSH at that minute and it was really empty. Wouldn't have been surprising... because they posted BEFORE THE STORE WAS OPEN. Or bags showing up in the offers thread that literally do not exist.

Third UO: It's really refreshing to get away from the online chat. I was at a couple H events for PFW and no one I talked to was on tPF or the godawful "bop" place that just steals from here, nor did they care about oh I don't know, let's say Tania or Tamara or Mel in Melbourne.

Not to sound naive, but do people actually do that? If so, that's quite sad.

My UO, and possibly not so unpopular, is that it's gotten to feel like so many view it (the "H journey") as a race/competition/what have you, that it's gotten distasteful and actually a bit boring for me to follow.

Your third UO, is very true. Sometimes a step away is the best thing for all of us.

Love that skirt in the middle - guessing that’s not the H? That entire outfit is superb!
Thanks, Sacai from Dover Street Market, Como Dempsey Singapore, January 2024 sale :) it’s my favorite skirt. Jacket is H from last year? At FSH, it was around 2100EU. Very hard wearing, durable. Underneath is a short sleeved H
Cashmere pullover; textured with white and gray Ancre detail, also solid: holds its shape, no pilling… which I was thinking of when responding to another posters U0 up thread, re the durability of H RTW.

Oh, it happens! Expanded UO: There are non-existent bags (like, lists of offers that are not real) and fakes boasted about online everywhere. Sadly it just makes normal shoppers feel more discouraged.

No I don't unfortunately (and can't photograph as the items were stolen). I can try to describe it though. In my experience it becomes shinier and more flaccid if that makes sense.
Yes I do agree. Items such as SLGs (wallets, card cases) in Chevre which are handled a lot more will eventually develop the shiny patina and also soften. My bags seem to be ok or wear slower, as I don't use them heavily.

I agree about the competition aspect making me lose interest. I understand how those with the means/time/interest in collecting Quota Bags might be invigorated by keeping up with this, but it just can't be me. I tried! It wasn't fun for me even though I hit it off with two amazing SAs (out of 5 other boutiques where I wasted my time driving to and entering) who actually wanted to sell me items I wanted and made sure I wouldn't leave empty handed. That was nice, but I live hours away. I can't live at Hermes to grow a more competitive profile to maybe be considered to buy a $12K+ handbag that isn't even my first choice.
Now when I hear another brand has a viral product/bag, I do lose interest because I don't want to chase a product down and hear about everyone's FOMO and how it's "impossible to get!". It's not fun anymore.
Don't get me wrong, I love most hermes leather bags and the colors and craftsmanship, they are phenomenal. but if I ever want a bag again and the store says 'no bags' or 'you need to build a SA relationship over time', I'll go preloved and find a third party authenticator to skip the headache. it seems like many perfectly lovely classy women buy through resellers because they just want the bag and it's not a bad thing if they can't get it from the store. it's just a bag. ^_^

For many it is the thrill of the hunt. I've obsessed over a bag only to have it sit in the closet.

I'm starting to have this mindset too. My home store is pretty small and stock is so limited that it's just been anticlimactic to go in at times. Plus my SA is now on medical leave indefinitely so not sure if I really feel like going in anytime soon. I'm pretty set on bags for now so I'm really not interested in "playing the game." Then again, I haven't been in to see what they have in the new line of RTW so I could be eating my words soon. Lol

UO - at first glance, the Cut watches remind me of the Victorinox Swiss Army watches that were popular in the 80's. Cute, but I would not purchase.

For many the thrill of shopping has changed partly due to the pre-spend & of course making the
connection to an SA to get a bag or a SO
Agree that Hermes leather bags, craftsmanship, styling, colors are unique & attract a wide range
of clients but the hoops that many of us feel are H puts us through are unattainable for many.
Many of us who are savvy & have dealt with extraordinary resellers over time with confidence
have no issues buying from a reseller & will likely have an authentication done just as an option.
There are many colors of bags that have been discontinued but still have strong appeal & the
resale market fills that void nicely.
For those who want the experience of walking into an H boutique, enjoy yourselves. It's a wonderful
world to see craftsmanship at a very high level but the newness of that wears off sooner than later
& @Hankypanda, you are right, it's just a bag & that should put it in perspective for many

Accompanying a friend over this weekend to ask about how to place a wish list, it's off putting to hear the process. Yet resellers are abound.
  • Wishlist is closed until next year
  • Come to the store personally often (starting early next year), to see if any SA is free to grant a wishlist appointment
  • Appointment has to be inquired in person, not by phone
  • Come to the said appointment to discuss wishes
  • Wish is valid for one year
  • No guarantee of delivery
Yes, yes :btdh:
