Another unpopular opinion coming up.
Reading through the 'relationships' thread I find myself increasingly bothered by some posters anxiety about not spending enough to get offered a bag.
Or feeling anxious about finding enough items they like or want to spend money on and therefore missing out on a bag offer.
The reason I'm finding myself bothered by this is for a couple of reasons.
Firstly that I firmly believe that shopping is a form of recreation (well-unless its grocery shopping that is but then I also quite enjoy trips to whole foods market and nice delis and Borough market here in London discovering nice food)
Shopping for non essential luxury goods is in itself a luxury and should bring one pleasure not feelings of anxiety and neurosis (have I offended my SA? Am I being ghosted? I spent XYZ yet got no offer I know someone who spent less get offered this..etc)
And finally the sense of people just throwing money at things they may not actually love or particularly desire in order to buy....A BAG
just doesn't sit well with me.
Its almost as if some people have lost their reason and sense of the value of money itself when it comes to the brand.
I know some may answer that its 'the business model' but I do ask myself if this is so?
I know its a newer thing that has come in the wake of Hermes popularity and brand visibility.
But in this day and age it feels at times distasteful and excessive.
There I've said it.
Apologies to anyone I've offended with this opinion.
I really love Hermes and have done for almost 40 years
However I vehemently dislike the way the hype around the brand makes some people behave and the way it makes some people feel insecure about their spending habits or how they dress to go shopping.
Amen! And thanks:smile:

I'm sure I must have read a similar opinion somewhere on this thread but I'll restate it:
  • It is terribly sad that the given situation with the supply of and demand for many H bags has rendered so many consumers unable to make a decision by themselves. When offered a bag, many turn to TPF to ask if they should accept it...they want to know if it is a 'popular' bag that they should accept because they may not get another offer, even if they don't personally like the bag.
I'd assume that if one has the financial wherewithal to purchase an H bag, one has had some success in life and has had to make more than a few tough decisions...deciding whether or not you like a bag enough to spend many thousands of dollars on it should not be one. Whether you should spend many thousands of dollars on a bag at all...different question!

I personally think this is an Hermes bubble. It’s attracted a bunch of “hype” types that are in it just for the chase vs actually loving it or having the item fulfill a function in their life. Maybe it’s Hermes marketing strategy or maybe not but either way I think part of the long wait and hoops are meant to filter out hype chasers.

Also with hype types they’ll quickly move on to the next thing. I think in a year or so when people start making more and more Hermes “hate” videos, these issues will die down.

So incredibly well said. What’s also distasteful is when people only want the bag and buy items for a bag knowing full well they are going to resell them in those fb groups. We’ve seen those posts where the seller will say “boutique fresh. Purchased yesterday.” I can’t also help but be disgusted at those posts where people post a half dozen rodeos and orans or 10-20k worth of spend to include the finesse necklace (it wouldn’t surprise me if H keeps raising the prices on jewelry to combat these resellers), Avalon blanket, a cape cod watch, belt etc. Items that others value and like but are so cheapened by these “close clean outs.” How is it a closet clean out anyway when everything is bnib? I think it speaks volumes on the character of the person and their upbringing when they do things like this. That’s my personal opinion.

And sadly I don’t think the hype will go away anytime soon. The same people continue to sell in these fb groups. They’re not going away. I fully believe it has to do with flexing and the chase. There’s some kind of addiction going on and hope these people get help before it’s too late.

That’s true. A subsection of Hermes lovers, the type you describe, in my opinion have some personal issues. Mostly to do with confidence and self esteem.

Oh goodness, I'm glad I'm not on those Facebook groups! It's sad that these people aren't being banned from buying Hermes. People who hoard bags are sad, too. I feel like Hermes is fueling this feeding frenzy (and why not? massive profits!), but it's turning people into the ugliest part of themselves sometimes to play this game. I was in the same boat 6 months ago...wondering, what did I do wrong to not get a QB? Once I stopped caring about the QB, I was myself again. It's so easy to be sucked in this QB chase vortex with social media (facebook, IG, tiktok) posting about these bags all the time. You see an influencer with so many bags and then you think that's how many you like, when honestly, how many bags does one really need? (I realize the irony posting it on this forum) LOL!

I also think buying for the sake of getting a BKC offer and then reselling these quota-reaching purchases is the exact opposite of showing an appreciation for the brand.

It’s not “luxurious” or “special” to go into a store where the stock is so dismal that you can’t even buy a breakfast set or a wallet or whatever basic item. Ever since I’ve moved to the US I’ve noticed this, but maybe it’s just a timing thing and Europe is the same, but for years now I go into a store and it doesn’t give a luxurious, successful vibe, it gives a sad-ass vibe. Many shelves are collecting dust, can’t RTW is all the same items for months and months and missing most of that season’s collection, etc. No other luxury house has as sad-looking stores as the two Hermes boutiques I’ve gone to in the US have been.

Even if I don’t agree, I get why they “hide”/have few of bag stuff. But good lord when I can’t even buy a blanket or mug or cardigan or whatever I just roll my eyes and walk into Dior or Loro Piana or whatever.

I really wish Hermes would get better stock of their basic items, it’s really really turning me off.

Sigh, one day I’ll move back to Europe, maybe things are better there

I must agree that in London, to see the queues outside NBS, asked to give a name then take a seat, and hear others get told (from a leather-goods store) they have no bags, no SLGs and limited stock of knick-knack-noo-noos reminds me of the Government stores in former Soviet Union rather than a luxury French flagship.

That's probably why I feel so at home.

I don't care I must admit, I have enough of everything.

H Nice is nice though :sunshine:

Thanks so much, I think your opinion is not unpopular! I do see many people are anxious about this H 'relationships' thing. Numerous times I saw people in the store looks so stressed and anxious.....it's like going for a job interview rather than shopping in a store

I feel the same like you. These FB groups sells really get out of hand, always same list of items, BNIB.....etc. plus all those resellers snatch up everything in the the web store makes things even worse. Don't really know when this going to die down :annoyed:

I totally agree with you entire post. I just wanted to add, and this is probably a very unpopular opinion on this forum, that there's a quite a bit of data that suggests that insecurity (not just about spending habits) and the need to feel a sense of belonging is a driver for people who buy "luxury" items. One might argue that buying a birkin or a rolex or other items that you need to "earn" to get to buy, plays into this in a big way. And in that sense, it is at the core of the modern luxury business, and that providing this kind of experience is more important than the object being sold.

I have a healthy assortment of the usual bags. The ones that I love now are somewhat idiotic and impractical except they make me smile. (I thought I wanted a DC elan, but now think it may be too practical lol)

Although I am a neutrals lover, this bag has to be in a pop color, bc otherwise it will look like tiers of scalped wigs. Assuming it’s crinoline idk. My SA is getting the info

The saddest part is when they have to number the items because they have so many things for sale or so many of the same things for sale e.g. six rodeos, four orans, three h pop earrings, half a dozen mosaic sushi plates, and several calvis. I’m curious how they get their hands on so many calvis. Apparently finding one these days is like finding a case of liquor during the prohibition.

If this was in neutral, I would be getting major feather duster vibes like Fifi from Beauty and the Beast.
