I don't believe in "essential" pieces. Everyone's style is different and everyone has their own different staples.
Excellent sentiments from CC and ExotiKitten. There are
abstract essentials, and then there are
my essentials. So, in the abstract, I'd say ....
- diamond studs
- hoops, whether they be plain metal or begemmed
- an everyday pendant: would bet for most women, that's either a round solitaire or a religious symbol
- a classic timepiece
... and everything else is variable, because some people aren't married, some people hate having things on their hands, rings or bracelets, etc. (I know this can also be true of earrings and necklaces, but curiously enough, it's the hands that I see most frequently).
But for me?
- the studs are a line of graduated bezels climbing my ears going from white gold to yellow gold to rose gold, so I always match
- no hoops, because on the occasions that I don't wear my studs, I dip into my extensive collection of chandelier earrings, which, yes, I consider
absolutely essential
- a chunky bezeled pear diamond on a chain about twice as long as most ladies wear, because it's more important to me to be able to see it and play with it than it is to have it, like, set off my collarbone or whatever ...
- as yet, no classic timepiece, though I'm anticipating one eagerly: instead I wear a chunky black leather watch with spikes, or a rhinestone vintage piece
- and enough rings that I could give a brass-knuckle fighter a run for his money.
I mean, I think the underlying concept of "essentials" is the stuff that you consider to be the building-blocks of your wardrobe, the stuff that's so central to your identity that you can't really conceive of anybody else being so different as to not start from that same baseline. Lots of revealing assumptions there ....
